I just started using LogMeIn and it seems to work pretty well.  I haven't tried it through firewalls/routers though.  That's the biggest problem I have with any VNC client.  If I try to help home users out, they usually don't know their IP address for me to get to them, muchless how to forward a port.

I have never used remote assistant but I have used a proxy to spare login on my friends computer. It was an altered windows to allow multiple users on at the same time. That is probably the closest I have come to remote desktop.

yep, It gets quite technical when it comes to using VNCs or similar products behind the NAT environment. but after setting some tweaks on port forwarding it's all sweat.
