My two cents.....I don't know if any of you use Microsoft's Windows Tools.  One program I love to use Autoruns (do a google search, I believe Microsoft Tech Net has the download).  What this program does, is shows you what is running on your computer, but also shows you what is running at startup.  So you can walk through these startup programs and determine which are not necessary.  Now this will increase your boot up some, but remember it is always safe to take a little more time to boot (for you virus scanner) then to worry about speed.  But there are tons of stuff most people have running that they don't need to run.  Some examples of this are Microsoft Live, Yahoo Messenger, Google Desktop, Google Messenger, and many others that do not need to be running when you turn your computer on.  So hope this gives you a little insight into how I look at it.  Have a wonderful day and let me know if you liked this program Autoruns.
