Hey guys, I just bought a new laptop. I will be using the laptop to surf the web and I will also be downloading files, so I will need a good antivirus to protect my computer from viruses.

Here are the specs of my laptop (not sure if it matters for antivirus software, but I'll include it anyways):

14" Sony VAIO C Series
Intel® Core™ i5-2410M processor (2.30GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 2.90GHz
4GB (2GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
500 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive [5400 rpm]
AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M (1GB VRAM) hybrid graphics with Intel® Wireless Display technology
Microsoft Windows® 7 Home Premium

So, can you guys recommend me a good antivirus software? I guess it would be a plus if it were free, but I don't mind paying for a good antivirus software (not paying over $30 for it). So.....help please?

Hi Bishvabis and Welcome to SCF Community.

Your lap have very good performance and, Yes, that is very important for "new" AV-s since some of them are very "heavy" for "weak and older" PCs.

My first recommendation is to try FREE Avira AV: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,208.0.html I'm sure you'll be more satisfied with them than with some AV which cost under $30.
My second advice, in case that you don't like Avira or some other FREE AV (Avast, AVG or Panda): http://scforum.info/index.php/board,10.0.html , is to spend few more bucks and buy some well know AV like: Kaspersky, NOD32, BitDefender or McAfee. Wink

Hope these suggestions will help You??
Also, please don't forget to provide us your experience with tested products and final decision.

Best Regards,

S.

If you want free then I recommend Avast , superantispyware and Malwarebytes. coupled with Comodo firewall They are all free for personal use . It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.

My opinion is that McAfee is too heavy use to powerless machine! It requires at least a dual core processor to function correctly! Huh? I would recommend either Avast or AVG virussanner of the smaller power machine to begin! Undecided
