speeding up your comp!!!

you may need additional mb ram if:

*if you have alot of programs loading at windows start.
*your computer spends alot of time swapping things to and from virtual memory.
*you work with large files ( graphics munipulation programs like photoshops, video editing, 3d games) they all use lots of ram.
*grumbles alot and is slow to load applications.

*mb ram
*your hard drive space is different than ram, your hard drive is where information is stored
*ram is the path that applications are sent thru.
*its like your brain think of your brain as the hard drive and think of the ram as the little fibers that transfer iformation.
*the more ram you have the more information you can have loaded from the hard drive

virtual memory and ram
*virtual memory is an area on your hard drive to simulate ram.
*when your computer starts to run out of ram, your hardrive starts to write some information into virtual ram.
*since hard drives are slower than ram! your system slows down because of having to write to virtual memory. more ram you have the less time it spends writing.


increasing memory!

before installation you will need to know how much memory you have.
a)*right click: my computer>properties> located under the general tab you will see how much memory you have now.
b)*remember that amount you will need to add it to the amount of memory your installing.

Installation:
static electricty can damage your module and other computer parts.
so you will need to ground yourself.

1)ground yourself:
*turn off computer, monitor, and all accessories (printer,speakers,ect.)
*don't leave comp power cord plugged in.
*briefly touch an unpainted metel part of your computer.
*plant your feet and don't walk around. if you need to do so ground yourself again

2)take off computer case:
*each case can be different consult your manual on how to remove yours.

3)find your dimm slots
*dimm slots are usually black,there are ejector clips at each end of each slot.

4)new board:
*be sure to only touch it by the ends of the board
*line up the notches of pins that will seat down into your memory slot.
*if it does not line up properly just flip it around doesn't matter what side the stickers are on as long as the gold pins line up.
*place module in slot.
*push hard when the ejector pins snap up around the module your memory is installed.

5)test it:
*before putting the case back on you should check the the amount of mb ram is being displayed.
*turn your computer and your monitor back on.
*right click my computer>properties on the general tab you will see the amount of memory you have.
*be sure to add the amount of memory you had prior to the amount you have just installed minus the memory needed to boot.
*that should be the amount of memory being displayed.
*should it reflect the two amounts of memory Congratulations!! your new mb ram board is now succefully installed.

6)trouble shooting
*check module. did both side clips pop up to hold the module firmly in place.
*try removing the module and replacing it to make sure its seated properly.
** recheck your mb ram now being displayed.
* should that fail you will want to remove the first mb ram module already installed in your computer and installing the new mb ram module in its slot.
*if that works and the mb ram is being properly displayed for the new amount you just installed you may go ahead and install the mb ram that was already installed in your comp in the second slot.
*check to see that the two modules add up to the amount being dsplayed my computer>properties.
should this fail to work you will need to buy the rb ram module from the maker of your or you may just use the new mb ram module.

7)tips:
*when purchasing a module remember the trouble shooting guide and you may want to go bigger than the mb ram already installed.
*most xp computers have 2 slots, most xp computers can handle up to 1024 of mb ram
*most 98's have three slots but can usually only handle 384 mb ram.
*you may choose to spend a couple extra dollars for the additional mb ram due to the fact there are only so many slots!

**for expercienced users**

a) freeing up some memory up now:

*start>run>type in: msconfig> click ok.
*this will bring up a box of all programs that load when windows load.
*go thru the start up services and uncheck any un-needed applications from loading (instant messengers,p2p's,printers,and or scanners, ect.) "i personaly shut down task scheduler and diable windows firewall"
*on windows load you will need; (all load profiles,scan registry,system tray,motive monitors ext.) and any security applications you choose to load at start up.
*please if your unsure of something leave it to load at windows start up.
