Hi SCF Members,

this time I would like to start (again) discussion... "How to choose proper antivirus software" ?!

Almost, all "old" SCF members are involved in our "The Best AntiVirus" topic: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,100.0.html but in this (new) topic, We'll try to consider more factors which influence to our decision.

With so many good offers: http://www.irdb.com/antivirus-software/ choosing anti-virus software for our computer can be tough. With so many options, how could you possibly know which one is The Best AV for You? Thankfully, We (experienced users) knows some of the most important things to look at when choosing the right anti-virus software: Speed, Updates (frequency), Package deals (AV, IS, etc.), Safety (virus detection) and, of course, Price.

Regular readers will know that I specially appreciate companies that offer Free AV solutions. However, We'll knows that Paid-for AV products usually offer better technical support and more comprehensive protection features than free programs. Internet security suites go further still, offering firewalls, identity theft protection, parental controls and even more.

So lets start with Your thoughts and recommendations, how to choose a good anti-virus program ?

As you know, Avast isn't my first choice for Free or Paid AV...

But seriously: explain why not. There is not a good reason. And all my friends that listen to my combo-advises, stay virus free. For real. So... What else is there to want? Speed? Avast is one of the leanest AV's!

What I feel is bad with AVG is the false detection thay have in the tests. e.n.g. 4 in Nov and 1 in Dec.
Also F-Secure have fault detection in this test with 4 in Nov and 5 in Dec.
Kaspersky have 1 in Nov and non in Dec.
McAfee have non in Nov and 1 in Dec as compaire.

In my opinion ther is also wery importent to get a good acurate detection in a good antivirus not just a detection so that is my reason that I still think that Kaspersky and McAfee is two of the best protection you can have.

McAfee, I hate. Same for Norton.

Kaspersky is (was) very very good but IF something gets passed it... You are really fracked Avast is better that way. Only cleaning an already infrected system with Avast does not work. But installed on a clean system... No (almost no) false positives (very important) and almost no virii get passed it. If they do, they often are more isolated in their reach than on Kaspersky systems.

Also, your tests show again how good Avast is. Fro free. Year after year.

I rest, again, my case ;p

Corporations have other requirements, I do not talk about those...

You all know, that I'm McAfee Fan... but I don't want to promote any Paid AV at SCforum (for FREE ).

When We speak about FREE AV's, which We support strongly (only "old" verified), my favorite (for last few months) is Panda Cloud: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,2708.0.html

It work perfectly, especially on "newbies" PC's!

Honestly, I don't have good memories with Avast...

Thank for sharing that link, Avira is top of the list. But I have been using Kaspersky for last 4 years.

If avast is not the one for you, why don’t you go to Kaspersky 10. It has good reviews and ratings too.
