Interesting feedback gents. Not sure if any of the freebies can really compare to some of the ones one has to pay for. McAfee always found stuff that the freebies did not.
Anyway, am going to try Avast first.

IMO, right now AVIRA provide better protection... http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,208.0.html

From what I have read, Avast seems pretty good. I use it and I am satisfied with it. For one thing, my computer has had no security issues after it was installed.

I haven't heard too much about Avira though. Is it better than Avast and does it take up a lot of disk space?

I use AVG for my personal machine and for Freeware I think it is the way to go...  I really have not had any issue with false positives.  Running version 8.5

I prefer avast than avira. I guess it still depend on the preference of the user.

I used AVG, Avast and Avira free editions in the past one year; I like Avira the best of the lot. I think AVG kinda lost the plot with v8.x..i got too many false positives with it, and Avast has some UI and performance issues. Avira generally works well, but hs occasional problems updating the definitions files and engine correctly. But of the lot, it's the least problematic.
