Hi, alicefred. Welcome to SCF!

I'm not sure is your lap maybe infected with some malware but We'll start with re/installation and after that check other things...  ;)

1. Download AVG uninstall/cleanup utility and run it: http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_arm_sup_____.dir/avgremover.exe If is not possible to download any file (they disappear after download), please remove this file from AVG program folder "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgoff2k.dll" and check the download again.

Please be informed that AVG remover must be finished completely - sometimes stopping of AVG services (for example AvgMfx) takes more time.

*After restart remove these folders:

C:\Program Files\AVG
C:\Documents and settings\All users\Application data\AVG8
C:\Documents and settings\All users\Application data\AVG9

2. Then download the latest installation file from this webpage and run it: http://free.avg.com/download-file-ins-afg-free

Update AVG when completed and restart your lap.

* Some folders could be hidden by default Windows settings. To view hidden files and folders:
1. On the taskbar, click Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel -> (Appearance and Personalization) -> Folder options.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Click “Show hidden files and folders” (the name may vary depending on the operating system).
4. Click OK.

Hope this instructions will help you?

I'll wait for your reply,

S.

I have a pretty new HP laptop running Windows XP, got it only a few weeks ago from Best Buy through "dealrocker" discount deal. Last night accidentally I uninstalled AVG Free 9.0 and now I am trying to reinstall it by downloading it again. Every time I run setup I get an error message which says "AVG Download Manager: Invalid control file format. (Error Code: 0xE001C04B). Can anyone help me in the installed AVG Free 9.0?

Thanks..
