Microsoft has released an emergency "out-of-band security patch" for Explorer to address a major gaping security hole that is being actively exploited by hackers and other malicious players.

As many of you may already be aware from all the headlines and news stories over the past week, this security hole  in all versions of Explorer could allow hackers to take over your computer by tricking you into visiting tainted Web sites. Officials at TrendMicro were claiming that as many as 10,000 sites have been compromised and had exploit code planted on them to infect users..

MS08-078 : Security Update for Internet Explorer
Severity - CRITICAL

According to Microsoft, the virus affects "Windows Internet Explorer 7 on supported editions of Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows Vista Service Pack 1, and Windows Server 2008."


The company also says Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 4, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, and Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 on all supported versions of Microsoft Windows are potentially vulnerable.
