Latest antivirus tests show which apps perform best

There seems to be two extreme opinions about malware on Android.

At one end is the clarion call of the security companies and their doomsday warnings about the thousands of malicious bits of malware that are flying around in the ether.

At the other extreme are those who say “never been a problem, just be sensible about what you download.” The truth, as is so often the case, is somewhere in between the two.

Google has done great work to increase the layers of protection offered by Android and the Verify Apps function, which scans all apps as they are being installed regardless of the source, makes Android fairly safe.

In fact earlier this year, Google’s executive chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt declared that Android is more secure than the iPhone.

What Verify Apps can’t protect you against is transporting PC or Mac malware on your device or protect you from other attack vectors such as malicious websites or files designed to exploit vulnerabilities in apps like Adobe’s Acrobat Reader.

Recently the independent malware test lab AV-Test.org tested 28 Android antivirus apps against a representative set of malicious apps discovered in the previous month.

The testing, which used 2,124 samples in total, discovered that the industry average detection rate is now 96.6 percent, some 6 percent higher than when it last performed such testing.

Many of the apps managed to detect 100 percent of the malware and overall there were only a few false positives and only two apps failed to get certification.

It is also worth pointing out that many of the antivirus apps available from the Play Store are in fact security suites and they offer much more than just malware detection.

Among the extras are anti-theft features like remote lock/wipe/locate, message filtering, backup, firewalls, parental control functions and so on. This means if you are going to install a security app, make sure it is good at finding malware and it offers the extra features you need.

Below: Google Play links for the programs that have a 100% "detection" rate...

I quote 'detection', for real time rootkit detection and stuff is non-existent as far as I know on Androïd :( As far as I can tell, most AV's on android work just as apk scanners. And file scanner. Big whoop. I expect more. MS-Dos* had more! ;p
POST-EDIT: Samker has a more indepth article about this subject, here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8539.msg22021.html ...

12 of the 28 managed a perfect detection rate:

avast! Mobile Security version 3.0 — https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avast.android.mobilesecurity

Avira Free Android Security version 2.1 — https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avira.android

ESET Mobile Security & Antivirus version 2.0 — http://www.eset.com/us/download/home/detail/family/25/

Ikarus mobile.security version 1.7 — https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ikarus.mobile.security&hl=en

Kaspersky Internet Security version 11.2 — https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kms.free

Kingsoft Mobile Security version 3.2 — http://filedir.com/android/tools/kingsoft-mobile-security-screenshot-2323487.html (WTF!! Kingsoft the Office Suite builders...?? A perfect score on antivirus?? Strange...!)

Trend Micro Mobile Security version 3.5 — http://esupport.trendmicro.com/help/tmms/solution/en-us/1097502.aspx

TrustGo Mobile Security version 1.3 — http://www.trustgo.com/en/

NQ Mobile Security version 6.8 — https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nqmobile.antivirus20

Symantec Norton Mobile Security version 3.7 — (?) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.symantec.mobilesecurity

Antiy AVL version 2.2 — https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antiy.avl&hl=en

G Data Internet Security version 25.0 — https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.gdata.mobilesecurity2g&hl=en

Also a big miss on most (free / demo) antivirus programs is that scanning cannot be run in the background... If you switch to another app, Home will lose your AV completely in most cases and the scan will be stopped.

I should test in the next couple of months what actually would be good... Mission accepted, maybe ;p

So what is your verdict? Do you use an antivirus app on your device?

(Original article with ALL results, here: http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/mobile-devices/android/nov-2013/)

And Samker: could you pin? Pretty please? ; -)

What about this research: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2425153,00.asp

"I was very impressed by McAfee's detection scores and numerous extra features, which includes robust backup options for premium subscribers. With it you can back up your SMS messages, call log, contacts, and the media files on your device. I also liked the fine-grain controls for wiping my device with McAfee and the different profiles for controlling access to apps. Besides a problematic lockscreen, McAfee is a very strong mobile security app."

I have read the report for Nov 2013.

Something is wrong regarding McAfee but I cant get the info why.
It scores 100% but just get 5.5 point in the protection.
http://www.av-test.org/no_cache/en/tests/test-reports/?tx_avtestreports_pi1%5Breport_no%5D=134547

Compare this with Kaspersky as an example that have 100% and 6.0 in protection!
http://www.av-test.org/no_cache/en/tests/test-reports/?tx_avtestreports_pi1%5Breport_no%5D=134543

Please explain this!

If some one cant explain this difference to me, then I see it as a fault print in the summary of the test!

Particular when McAfee is rated 100% again in the Jan 2014 test.

Note! also that McAfee have a SD backup feature that is not in many of the other have.

This list a bow is not even taking care of the usability. Many of them that get rated at 100% don't score so high in usability an a few have also false detection in the test.
In my view a false detection is as bad as no detection.

When I read the test for Jan 2014 McAfee is rated as 6.0 with 100% detection!
http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/mobile-devices/android/jan-2014/

So I provide a link to the download to the McAfee protection products.
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=McAfee&c=apps

I suggest to ad it to the other of the virus protection kit in this thread.

I know: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8714.msg22760.html#msg22760

:(

Now you mix. different product what I understand!
I this thread and my comment was regarding the Android product in the test.

What you send a comment was about you laptop product and that seams to be the home total Internet suet what I understand and not the Anti Virus Enterprise 8.8 or something like that (this based on that referred to that you kept the firewall installed).

Lets keep the different products separate then it is easier to get track of the discussion.

What I point out in the comment a bow was that It seams to be some fault in the summary and grading of McAfee in this test. It is rated to hit 100% but just get a grade of 5.5 without any comment way.
This to compare to Kaspersky  that get 100% and a grade of 6.0 in protection!

Some have made a huge mistake what I can see!
