Pc getting slower and slower.
« on: 19. January 2008., 14:56:08 »
Hi there,

I am new to this site and hope someone can help me with this problem.

My pc is running so slow that it can't even keep up with my typing and it took me 8 minutes to just load your home page. I have reformatted the hard drive, installed winxp home, and set up outlook express. The machine is 84% empty so there are no problems with it being full of unused stuff.

Its driving me crazy taking forever to load pages and jumpy typing but i don't know what more i can do.

Please can someone guide me in the right direction?

Thanks for your time,

If you have recently rebuilt your machine from scratch and still are having issues of slowness could be  hardware problem of some kind.  Run some diagnostics on your components if you can from the BIOS, and and memory / hd test for sure.

Sometimes, a failing hard drive can lead to this problem. My suspicion is that the PC keeps on looking for virtual memory on the problematic drive, doesn't find it on the flaky drive, and keeps on looking and looking. My other symptom was occasional problems opening files. The problem went away after I replaced the hard drive. Because of the drive's flakiness, it took me a long time to clone the drive, though, so it's always a good idea to make regular backups if you value your current Windows setup and or data.

I would agree. Old drives can slow down a PC greatly!

Defragging, cleaning registry and removing unecessary service may help. Read my guide (which used to be on here) http://cmts.info/readarticle.php?article_id=11. Samker please link to the version on your site if you want.

Download autoruns and disable programs you don't need.  Like programs running in the background checking for updates.
Don't stop any McAfee programs.   ;)

Process Explorer is also a great program to see what is running.

There are quite a few services that get installed when you install software that look for updates in the background or act as quick launch apps.  I personally always disable these things.  I disabled about 20 of them on my laptop.  Also check to see what processes are hogging cpu time in task manager.
