Title: Blu-ray Disc to Hit 128GB

The Blu-ray Disc Association this week announced plans to release a new commercial high-definition disc format that will offer up to 128GB of write-once capacity within months.

The association also said it plans to release a rewritable disc format for consumers that will support up to 100GB of data, or twice the Blu-ray capacity available today.

The specifications for the BDXL (High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable discs) format for commercial use and IH-BD (Intra-Hybrid discs) for consumers are expected in the next few months, the Blu-ray Disc Association stated in a press release posted on its website: http://www.blu-raydisc.com/en/Press/PressReleases.html (http://www.blu-raydisc.com/en/Press/PressReleases.html)

The BDXL specification is targeted at filling the data archiving needs of broadcasting, medical and document imaging companies.

Discs meeting the specs will have write-once, read many (WORM) options with 128GB capacity discs and rewritable capability on 100GB discs. A consumer version of BDXL will be offered particularly in those regions where BD recorders have achieved broad consumer acceptance, the association added.

Today's Blu-ray discs come with single or dual recording layers with 25GB or 50GB capacity, respectively. The new formats will have three to four recordable layers.

"Professional industries have expressed a desire to find optical disc solutions that enable them to transition away from magnetic media for their archiving needs," said Victor Matsuda, Blu-ray Disc Association Global Promotions Committee chair, in a statement. "Leveraging Blu-ray Disc to meet this need provides professional enterprises with a compact, stable and long term solution for archiving large amounts of sensitive data, video and graphic images using a proven and widely accepted optical technology."

The IH-BD disc discs will incorporate a single BD-ROM layer and a single BD-RE layer, which allows a user to view, but not overwrite, data while providing the ability to include relevant personal data on the same physical disc.

'This allows for consumer specific applications where combining published content with related user data on a convenient, single volume is desirable," the association said.

Because both BDXL and IH-BD are specially designed formats with specific market segments in mind, newly-designed hardware is required to play back or record BDXL or IH-BD media. However, because the new media specifications are extensions of current Blu-ray Disc technology, future BDXL and IH-BD devices can be designed to support existing 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray Discs.

Blu-Ray disk is one of the advanced systems of disk. As a latest version Blu-Ray supersedes DVD (digital versatile disk or digital video disk) format. Blu- Ray is also as optical disk storage, Optical disk means a disk coated with plastic that can store digital data as micro pits engraved in the surface; is read with a laser that scans the surface. The most prominent aspects are storing high-definition video, Play station 3video games, and other data, with up to 25 GB each single layered and 50 GB per dual layered disc. Though these numbers show the standard storage for Blu-ray drives, the specification is open-ended, with the upper theoretical storage limit left unclear. 200 GB discs are available, and 100 GB discs are readable without extra devices or modified firmware. The disc has the similar physical shapes and sizes as standard DVDs and CDs.

The Blu-ray disk is today to expensive. It is cheaper the by 1TB HD and use a externel E-SATA conection to arkive data then to burn out a Blu-ray disk. It's both cheaper and faster and you can rearange and delete data as many times you wan't.

Blu-ray disc
1 x 25GB Verbatim BD-RE cost about $ 14,30 -> give a GB price of $ 0,57

1 x 25GB Verbatim BD-R cost about $ 8,47 -> give a GB price of $ 0,33
10 x 25GB Verbatim BD-R cost about $ 81,75 -> give a GB price of $ 0,32

Hard Disk Drive
1 x 250GB (give about 230GB formated) Samsung HDD 2,5" 250GB Samsung HM251HI 8MB SATA  cost about $ 57,81  -> give a GB price of $ 0,25

1 x 1TB (give about 900GB formated) HDD 1000 GB Samsung HD103SJ SATA II 32MB cost about $ 84,09  -> give a GB price of $ 0,09

1 x 2TB (1800GB formated) Samsung HDD 2000 GB Samsung HD204UI 5400rpm 32MB  cost about $ 139,56 -> give a GB price of $ 0,08

USB conected HD with case
1 x 1TB (900GB formated)  Samsung HDX Samsung 3,5" 1000GB HX-DU010EB/A62  cost about $ 122,48  -> give a GB price of $ 0,14

So it cheaper th have HDD offline then burn Blu-ray disk's.

Just fore fun:

DVD-R
(100 x 4,7 GB) Verbatim DVD-R 4.7GB 16xspeed logo cakebox 100pcs + DVD case 14mm single black 100pcs  cost about $ 60,44  -> give a GB price of $ 0,13

So where do you wan't to have your data stored?
