Is McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i good enough?
« on: 03. April 2011., 08:26:15 »
I'm not good with computers, so please don't get frustrated with my dumbness. >.<

So, I have a few questions about computer security:

Is McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i good enough?
and
The OAS thingy always gets disabled by itself, and I can't re enable it. How do I fix that(I'm scared of going on the internet when that happens)?

Thanks :]

Hi Drea and Welcome to SCF Community.  :)

I'm not sure that you now have good protection with v8.5 since McAfee released v8.7 & v8.8 recently. Additionally, this version will have support only by the End of this Year: http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/support-eol-software-utilities.aspx

This problem indicate that your PC is maybe infected with some Malware, so my suggestion is to upgrade your McAfee to some newer version or to uninstall v8.5 and install some Free Antivirus like Avira, AVG... (in SCF's AV area you have the best oh them, with very useful users comments: http://scforum.info/index.php/board,10.0.html )

For the end, just to sure that everything is OK, please scan your PC with some Free version of Online Scanners: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,734.0.html and provide us logs from them and HijackThis.

cya later,

S.

Uh, I'm sorry I didn't say this before, but could it be that I haven't patched it before?
Would it be better if I patch it? and where could I get those patches?

oh I guess you better changed your mcAfee antivirus if you don't know well how to use it. try some free antivirus that you can download online like AVG Free Edition, for me its one of the most efficient and easy to use free antivirus that can be downloaded online. You can also browse this forum because it offers a lot of  free anti virus download links. Thanks. ciao :)

If you want I'll find for you latest Patch 8 for v8.5, but it'll not help you because this version will not have support from McAfee in 2012. ...

So my suggestion is to upgrade them to version 8.7/8.8 or to change AV solution.

Also please provide logs from HJT & Online scanners if you want to check is your PC infected with some Malware.

I'm currently using v8.7/v8.8 on my PCs. But since I've got no Plugin for these versions, I'm using v8.5 Patch 8 for my BartPE emergency CD.
Will I only get no more Patches for v8.5 or even no more signature updates?

Mcafee will stop making patches for 8.5, however, I doubt that they'll change the DAT format soon... so you can keep using the software, if your licence allows you to.

What do you mean by no plug-in? The antispyware add-on?

I meant a plugin for v8.7/8.8 for BartPE. I have the Antispyware Addon.

McAfee changed the DAT format to v2 last year. Since April or May 2010 the SuperDAT only includes v2 DAT files. Before it included also the old v1 format which also worked with my good old VirusScan 4.0.3 from 1998 or 1999!
VSE 8.5 can handle v2 formats, v8.0 only v1.
So you're right. They won't change the format soon. I just thought McAfee could stop autoupdate or something like this.
So v8.5 P8 should also next year be good enough for BartPE.

However, if someone has got a plugin for v8.7/8.8 for BartPE, please pm me.  ;D
