Snapchat employee data lost in phishing attack

There’s nothing fanciful about phishing and spam emails, all of us received and thrashed it frequently. However, targeted phishing emails are different, these are usually sent to us in specially crafted emails and most likely impersonating someone we know.

Snapchat, a popular social messaging platform, confirmed on Feb 28 that an employee fell for a phishing scam and revealed critical organizational payroll information.

Here’s what happened: On Friday, Feb 26, Snapchat’s payroll department was targeted by an isolated email phishing scam in which a scammer impersonated the Chief Executive Officer and asked for employee payroll information. Unfortunately, the phishing email wasn’t recognized for what it was–a scam–and payroll information about some current and former employees was disclosed externally.
