Corrupted HDD (MBR, PT)
« on: 06. November 2009., 11:47:39 »
Hi, I will go straight to the point.

I accidentally over-wrote first 216 bytes of MBR with zeros on my external 160gb usb hard drive and I can not;
 - Read or write MBR
 - Run chkdsk
 - Acornis DiskDirector does not detect the hard drive
 - Formatting does not work (Using Hirens BootCD), I can not save changes to MBR
 - I wiped with CopyWipe with all zeros and still cant do anything.

Any suggestion? data is not a concern but the actual hdd is the concern. I dont want to buy a new one :(

Thanks.

Here is one solution using Linux Ubuntu: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=822789

And few useful programs:

DiskPatch: http://www.diydatarecovery.nl

MBRFix: http://www.sysint.no/products/Download/tabid/536/language/nb-NO/Default.aspx

Hope something will help you...? ;)

Thanks for you suggestion, what do you think I should do if it's physically damanged?
I mean, I cant read or write MBR.. I can't even rebuild MBR and save the changes..
BTW, I will give them a try and post the result.

Cheers :)

Eric, there is little you can do to repair a physically damaged device without the special equipment... (I was heard for some funny solution with "domestic oven").

In my opinion you'll resolve this with some Software solution. ;)

Well, thanks for clarifying the fact that it can be solved with software solutions.
I'm keep trying though.. *sigh* btw, I'm wiping the hard drive to see if it makes any difference..

It's taking a longer than before, wiping before took me 45 min but now it takes 15 hours...  :'(

OK, I gave up fixing and before I throw it out I disassembled the hard drive and made a HDD Fan by mounting a metal plate onto the motor... thanks for you support btw.
