That's common problem with most Anti-Viruses, especially with McAfee.
But that's price for "safe" surfing.

After numerous emails to Trend Micro figured out when it does automatic updates to the software is when it slows it down. But since I disabled the automatic updates it doesn’t slow my system down like it was, except when it does an update. Which is so slow I just walk away from it when updating. I had the 2008 Trend Micro anti-virus without slowness issues.
