ZoneAlarm pioneered the personal computer firewall used by over 60 million people worldwide, and our parent company, Check Point Software, invented the enterprise firewall used by every member of the Fortune 100. We know how to keep the bad guys out.
ZoneAlarm Free Firewall blocks hackers from infiltrating your home PC by hiding your computer from unsolicited network traffic. By detecting and preventing intrusions, ZoneAlarm Free Firewall keeps your PC free from viruses that slow down performance, and spyware that steals your personal information, passwords, and financial data.
Features:
* Systematically identifies hackers and blocks access attempts
* Automatically makes your computer invisible to anyone on the Internet
* New interface makes it even easier—smaller size keeps it light

Yes, ZA give you much better protection than Windows FW.

Even that ZA is excellent FW I don't have good experience with them in combination with McAfee AntiVirus v.8.5 (very very slow startup).
I'm not test them with v.8.7!

it's interesting to note than virusscan enterprise (all builds) do not play well with zonealarm products.Mcafee recommends uninstalling buffer overflow protection when using free zonealarm
-
It quickly fixed, pretty easy to use, set up is very easy. It catches everything thus far and quickly puts your mind at easy as well as the toolbar, good one, good customization possibilities.

The free version of ZoneAlarm provides most of the functionality that a home user should have. I use the product with Mcafee Enterprise , and also have a hardware firewall. The important feature for me is the outbound firewall. If you really want to make sure your virus , addware, and malware is in check , you must also monitor ( authorize ) outgoing data and that is one key feature ZoneAlarm firewall does for you

Was my first too!!
In that time, doing stupid question, migrated to other firewall!!
