User Ashraf today commented at giveaway of the day (as usual). He points to his big review article here: http://dottech.org/95071/windows-best-free-file-drive-system-image-sector-backup-programs-review/

I thought it was worth the look!

Also, if you are wondering "paragon" or "acronis", I wrote down the biggest important day-to-day differences here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8338.msg21390.html#msg21390 . See Ashraf for features and stuff; here I only discuss things you must take into account (and won't be mentioned anywhere else...)

"Making the move to a new hard drive? This utility, normally $29.95, migrates everything from old drive to new.

Rick Broida by Rick Broida  September 3, 2013 6:58 AM PDT

Migrate from an old hard drive to a new one with Paragon Drive Copy 12 Compact.

(Credit: Paragon Software Group)

One of the best computer upgrades you can buy today is a solid-state drive (SSD), which offers benefits like faster booting, lower power consumption, less heat, and so on.

But as with any storage upgrade, half the challenge lies in moving everything from old drive to new. Not many drives come with the software to aid in such a move.

Thankfully, there are third-party options, and for a very limited time, you can snag one gratis: Today only, BitsDuJour is offering Paragon Drive Copy 12 Compact (PC) for free. It normally sells for $29.95.
(Note that as of around 10 a.m. ET, the site was operating very slowly, perhaps due to heavy traffic. But after my "order" went through, my confirmation e-mail -- with the necessary download link -- arrived almost immediately. When I clicked that link, I had to refresh the page once to get the download to start, but ultimately it worked fine.)

The software will work with any kind of drive migration, even if you're just moving to a larger platter-based drive. It effectively creates an image file of the old drive, then copies that image to the new one. That means you get everything: Windows, applications, settings, data, and so on. I've used similar utilities to move from a HDDs to SSDs, and each time the process went flawlessly. (Keep in mind you may need a USB-to-SATA cable to connect the new drive externally so you can perform the copy.)

Paragon Drive Copy 12 also has the option of copying physical drives to virtual ones (P2V) and back again (V2P), though it's not clear whether this version of the program actually supports virtual drives. Indeed, looking at Paragon's somewhat outdated product page (it still reflects a similar BitsDuJour deal from last May), there's some discrepancy in the software's features. Although the initial description mentions "wide migration options," including support for P2V and V2V, when you scroll down to the comparison chart between the Compact and Professional versions, it appears that only the latter supports V2V and V2P.

In any case, that's not a feature most users will need. At the very least, Compact does support basic partitioning, partition alignment, and, of particular importance these days, Windows 8.

If you're planning a drive migration, either now or in the future, this is probably a utility worth snagging. There's no registration code to worry about; the version you download is unlocked and ready to roll."

Received this question yesterday:
"Hi Devvie,
What is the different between the Paragon Backup and Recovery 11 Compact Giveaway  version  and the Paragon Backup & Recovery 11   ? (beside win PE ofcourse)
I have Paragon System backup 11, it does have an option to backup files/folders (but I have never tried), will that option be the same/similar to Backup & Recovery ?
I am thinking about using FreeFileSync for a simple backup solution, any drawbacks/problem that you are aware of ?
Thanks
Tony"

Tony: I'll reply laters... Till the re-edit :)

Paragon Adaptive Restore Manual

Copy-Pastes:
" P2V Copy to migrate an operating system from a physical hard disk to a virtual disk;
 P2V Restore to migrate an operating system from a Paragon backup image to a virtual disk;
 P2V Adjust to recover bootability after migrating an operating system from a physical hard disk to a virtual disk with a 3rd party tool;
 P2P Adjust to recover bootability after migrating a physical system to different hardware (available for any migration tool);
 Hot Copy to migrate a Windows based physical system to a virtual disk online, i.e. without rebooting Windows and interrupting its work;"

So P2P Adjust is MY beloved feature. P2V comes with today's giveaway. I don't see any quick usage for it, but apparently it is needed when virtual machine migration goes wrong...? At least the option is there :) And knowing Paragon, it will work too!

Some more facts...
" 2 types of virtual drives for VMware to create either an IDE or a SCSI disk;"
Again, I wouldn't know why this is important but apparently it is ;p

"Paragon VIM (Virtual Image Management) technology that enables Paragon products work with virtual disks as though  they are physical hard disks."
NICE! But it does not seem to be included in today's giveaway? I'll check and re-edit later in the day...

"Paragon Adaptive Restore™ provides support for major virtual machines presented on the market today:
 Microsoft Virtual PC;
 Microsoft Virtual Server;
 Microsoft Hyper-V;
 VMware Workstation;
 VMware Fusion;
 VMware ESX Server."

The rest of the document @ http://www.paragon-software.com/export/sites/paragonsoftware.com/docs/AR_eng240709.pdf contains real-life examples and instructions on how Adaptive Restore works. If you think Paragon looks too technical for your likes, give this document a look. It might help you along...

Peace!

 O0 oh yeah  O0

Giveaway of the Day - Paragon Virtualization Manager 12 Compact (English)

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/paragon-virtualization-manager-12-compact

Key Features:

P2V Copy – Migrate a physical system to a virtual machine or convert a backup image to a virtual disk. Migrate from 2TB+ physical drive to smaller virtual drive (it’s very helpful as most of hypervisors do not support 2TB+ virtual drives).

P2V Adjust – Recover the OS startup ability after an unsuccessful virtualization by a 3rd party tool.

Create VD – Create a virtual disk with a simple wizard.

Support for Major Virtual Machines – Oracle Virtual Box 4; Microsoft Virtual PC; VMware Workstation; VMware Fusion.

I must mention the reason why it is so compatible... It uses old VMWare format (version 6?) that is compatible with all major virtualization softwares. This seems like a smart thing to do, but last time I did this I ended up with the terrible sound stuttering bug in my Vista x86 virtual machine in latest VMWare (and after upgrading image to latest vmware version too). To date, I have been unable to solve this well-known bug and I am not using my old virtualized machine on my new Win 7 x64 system after all :(

I'll install today's giveaway on my friend's computer and one of these weeks I'll re-transfer my old Vista machine again.

Still, this is a GREAT tool to have lying around. If you finally get your New Big Machine with >16GB of RAM, you don't have to start all over again with installing softwares. You can just transfer you old Windows to a virtual machine and gradually transfer in the year to follow... Or give YOUR perfectly tuned system to newbe friends to play with.

In the end THE BEST PRODUCT is Paragon's Drive Copy 11 Professional. This goes beyond virtualization of you old machine: it actually transfers it to a completely new hardware environment. That one is not given away for free today, but I thought I'd mention it nonetheless.

For today's giveaway I'd like to find out more about P2V adjust - for that sounds like 'my' beloved feature: patch an existing OS to a new hardware environment... I'll repost with more info!

Peace!

Today's giveawayoftheday.com is a backup tool. I did NOT check it out. I have Paragon.

Looking for a current backup giveaway of theirs, I came up empty today. BUT I did find another interesting article for all interested in alternatives to Paragon's backup tools. Be warned, it dates back to 2009. Still, I thought to share it with you :)

I would not know why you would want to use something else as the proven Paragon, but go ahead, read all about it here: http://dottech.org/featured/11628/paragon-backup-restore-free-vs-macrium-reflect-free-vs-easeus-todo-backup-vs-driveimage-xml-vs-acronis-true-image-home-which-one-should-you-use/ (contains download links too!).

TIP: set a Google Alert for:
paragon (~giveaway OR ~free) (backup OR migrate OR manager) -crack -torrent -filestube

Peace!

Today on: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/paragon-migrate-os-to-ssd-20/#comments - Paragon Migrate to SSD.

The smallest in a suite of in total 3 EXCELLENT programs (with which I cannot live without anymore) that Paragon has to offer. The other two are described above.

This program copies your existing Windows OS to a new harddrive. This can be an SSD, but it is not necessary.

Quote from Paragon:
"Handy intuitive wizard performs fast and safe Windows migrations to new storage devices (HDD or SSD) and even downsizes to smaller capacity drives, thanks to advanced new data exclusion capabilities.

You can transfer a live system with no impact to your work, and have your partitions automatically aligned in the process if needed.

Benefits of Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 2.0:

Migrates Windows to larger or smaller storage devices in a single operation;
Supports any Windows since XP (including Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2);
Automatically aligns partitions on the destination disk if necessary;
Automatically detects and copies MSR for successful migrations of Windows 7;
Allows the user to exclude data during the process in order to fit  the destination disk;
Processes locked (in-use) disks with MS VSS to migrate without rebooting Windows;
Includes Paragon’s time-proven move/resize functionality;
Guarantees safety for the system and data.
Detailed Product information is available at Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 2.0 website: http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-OS-to-SSD/"

--> Quote from 'Ray' on GAOTD: "If you have dynamic disks, which I did for OS mirroring, then it will not work. I had to break the mirror and convert a disk to basic using another utility before this would work."
--> Quote from 'Rob' on GAOTD: "For anyone migrating to dissimilar hardware, to avoid the drivers problem, the trick is to NOT boot into the new PC. Instead place your Windows CD, into the new PC, and boot into that. Then do a ‘Repair Install’. That allows Windows to adapt the drivers for the new hardware. Works Fine with XP."
--> Quote from 'Basheer' on GAOTD: "XP has a file C:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl, which notes changes in the hardware. If it notes any major change, the file is
deleted by Windows. This causes the demand for new activation by the system. So to avoid any problems, just save a copy of the above file else where, so that you can restore it again after changes. This would satisfy windows."
--> Quote from 'Sol' on GAOTD: "Does not recognize Win 8 Beta."
(Ed.: devnullius: strange...! I'd like to know more :)

Enjoy?

Peace!
