SEO Tricks to Avoid

You have heard about a lot of different methods for search engine optimisation.  You have probably used a number of them in order to get your site in the top ranks.  There is a list of things that you should not do on your site.  Not only can you be penalised since they are outside the search engines guidelines, but you will lose consumers by using them.  The information below may seem straightforward.  You may even have heard of some of this before, but we have to mention it because it keeps happening.

These “evil” techniques are called on-page spamming.

•   Keyword stuffing is the number one no-no that you can get penalised for, even indirectly.  Keyword stuffing has been around for a long time, and it used to be kosher, but as the internet becomes filled with more and more sites keyword stuffing is bad.  Sure you want to use a primary keyword like London, but that doesn’t mean you should use it fifty times in 400 words.  You can use the keyword in the title, meta description, and throughout the site content, but it should be spaced appropriately.  It should also make sense.

•   Invisible or Semi- Visible Text options.  With a search engine they like to see more text because it is a quicker download, and the search engine really doesn’t need the photos.  However, consumers want to see pretty pages, with graphics, and images. In search engine optimization there is always a fine line for fixing a problem where consumers like one thing and search engines like another.  In this case you want the search engines to index pages that the consumer wants to see.  So you may try to use a font colour for the text that is the same as the background colour.  This produces hidden text that the human can’t see, but makes the search engine “happy.”  Of course the downside is that invisible or semi visible text is something the search engines do not care for.  Thus you get penalised for it if the search engine realises this is what you have done.

•   Another common error that individuals make is using CSS code to hide the text.  CSS cannot be seen by humans.  So if you write <div styel=”visibility:hidden:”> then put your keyword in with </div> at the end you are hiding text.  It is less risky for you with the search engine, but it can still get you booted out.
