Impact of Meltdown & Spectre Vulnerabilities

Yesterday, Google Project Zero announced the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities affecting Intel and other CPU vendors. Since then, it has become clear they impact everything from cloud services to browsers like Chrome and Firefox. 

These vulnerabilities are already causing service outages across cloud providers as they apply OS patches to secure systems. Today on the Defiant blog, I provide background on the vulnerabilities, an easy-to-read description of what they are and the immediate and longer-term effects that Meltdown and Spectre will have on the services and software that we rely on.
