Dear SCF Members,
in this Topic I would like to open discussion about The Best FireWall Solutions.
Right now I'm using McAfee Desktop FireWall 8.5 (old, but very good version  ).
Before McAfee FW I was use ZonaAlarm FW which is also excellent (probably The Best one) but because incompatibility with my AntiVirus (McAfee ViruScan Enterprise 8.5) I was uninstall them. :(
More about ZonaAlarm: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,26.0.html (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,26.0.html)
Now, please share with other SCF Members yours experiences, recommendations...?!

I was a long time user of Zone Alarm Security Suite, but could not find a suitable Vista copy. I recently purchased a license for Bit Defender Internet Security Suite 2008 and find it very good, and not too much of a resource hog. There is little if any drag created on start up, and it seems to work quite similar to ZA inasmuch as pop ups about setting new rules. I am satisfied as at this point in time.
-
Instead of relying on individual experiences alone, lets see the hard facts. And the facts say that the best free firewall is Online Armor while the best paid firewall is Outpost.
-
I'm currently Using Kaspersky Internet security, when the licence expires, I will switch back to Avira free antivirus and COMODO Firewall, I think COMODO and Zone Alarm are very close, but I feel COMODO is lighter.
-
I wasn't yet try KIS 2009 & Kaspersky Firewall?
How much resource (CPU) it use?
By the way, recently I was uninstall ZA because incompatibility with McAfee VSE.
Now I'm sticked with some old version of McAfee Desktop Firewall 8.5...
-
I use the Vipre Firewall as my Firewall, back then i use ZA but it slows down my system. Up to now i'm still looking for a better firewall. any suggestions.
-
I would recommend McAfee Firewall. It has the ability to block specific ports.

I will also suggest McAfee, but Members also often talk about Comodo?
So think about this two solution.

Did you try the COMODO ? You'll see it doesn't differ that much function wise from the ZA.
About the KIS2009; in normal conditions ( Not performing on-demand scan ) the CPU usage in task manager reported 0 mostly, the memory meter reported about 20 MB, I did a Full scan then the meters started jumping ! anyway; it showed a maximum of 95% CPU ( the average was about 20% ) and a maximum of about 150MB of memory on task manager ( average about 50 MB ), of course these aren't accurate numbers, just approximations a made after running the full scan for about 5 minutes.. ! :) if you have a specific reliable way to test it please tell me.
But in general I don't sense any annoying delay in the operation of my PC ( I have a 3GHz AMD 6000+ CPU with 2GB 400MHz RAM ).
-
Did you try the COMODO ?
I think that I was try some version before few years, if I find some good reason I'll install them again. ;)
Thank you for very good recension of KIS 2009.
We don't have any tool for this kind of testing but your PC is very strong and he "push up" Kaspersky very easy. Probably some "weak" PC will have big problems with them?
-
OK, after the scan is complete now, the CPU MAX reached 100% with average of about 50%, Memory Reached 300MB with average of 150MB, again, not so accurate numbers..

Thanks for the info, I guess weaker PCs will certainly have some issues, anyway, Kaspersky was a good choice even when using my older 1.8GHz 256MB PC, back then; the ZA & COMODO was my real problem ! ;D
-
the ZA & COMODO was my real problem !
I know that you plan to back to Avira, really don't know what to suggest. ZA is terrible combination with McAfee...
Probably it's best to after Avira installation test few days ZA and after reinstallation test Comodo for same period.
For me, try is best type of testing. ;)

Nod32 Smart Security V4 ;-)
-
I use the xp but I would change, it is better to mcafee or comodo?
-
i've been using outpost firewall pro for a few years now, it does the job well.
-
I use the xp but I would change, it is better to mcafee or comodo?
My favorite is Mcafee, but as you see Mashed is very satisfied with OutPost Firewall so this is one more possible solution.
-
Here's another vote for NOD 32 AV Suite which includes Firewall. Works great for gaming as it doesn't crash the first run of new games (multiplayer accessing the Interent).
-
i recommend Kaspersky Firewall it good
-
i recommend windows defender
-
OutPost Firewall super O0!
-
i recommend windows defender
Windows Defender don't have firewall?
Or this is something new?
-
Although Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite has failed me I do still use and recommend Zone Alarm Firewall, it is free, lightwieght, and secure. I use it along with Mcafee vscan 8.5i without any problems.

I use firewall of Windows XP, I am very contented with his operation, I fodder that stops a workstation is very good, also I have proven the one of eset, and fodder that works very well is but complete, I believe that for the use of the majority of people the one of xp is sufficient
-
It is very important to form well the firewall of our routers and the Nat of ports, alone to open the necessary ports
-
i recommend mcafee personal firewall, comodo firewall
-
ZoneAlarm is the best
-
i recomend mcafee firewall too
-
I would recommend McAfee Firewall. It has the ability to block specific ports.
that is correct :)
-
i dont know
-
I consider as the best firewall Zone Alarm only it and I use, well it is final with anti-virus.
-
I'm currently using Mcafee dektop firewall 8.0 with VSE 8.5i.
Although I've not seen any conflicts, does anyone have any info about problmes between the two ??
-
I'm currently using Mcafee dektop firewall 8.0 with VSE 8.5i.
Although I've not seen any conflicts, does anyone have any info about problmes between the two ??
I also use same combination and till now also no problem at all.
-
I am also using it too!
- McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i Patch 8
- McAfee Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 8.5i
- McAfee Desktop Firewall 8.5
I also have not seen any conflicts yet just like Samker
but I feel VSE8.5i is slowing my computer down. Anyway, good combination for me ;D
-
I use McAfee Desktop Firewall 8.5. It's a few years old now but very good. I don't know if it runs on Vista32, but i think not. On Vista 64 it definetly does't run. For those who use Vista can recommend the free Comodo Firewall witch even runs on Vista64 and that for free!
-
I'm using Win XP-Firewall with McAfee 8.5i + Antispyware Enterprise. Everything works fine till now but i'm planing to try comodo
-
Hi
On my end, I use Windows XP built in Firewall, in line with it, I have also use windows defender installed for spyware. Up to now I didn't have any problem with my machine. Also defender auto updates itself once their is a new update.
I had bad experience with Kaspersky and AVG.
thnx

-
i'm using eset smart security
-
I'm using Sygate personal firewall pro, is old but work well... and I have not seen any conflicts with McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i...
-
hh
actually am using a kaspersky anti virus + firewall
in firewall switch thats the best thing
-
I use McAfee firewall, never had an issue.
-
McAfee is the best
-
Zone Alarm is best.
-
I use McAfee firewall, never had an issue.
I have use it
but when I uninstall mcafee, then I can reinstall it anymoreZone Alarm is best.
I agree with you
it blocks pop ads and many more
-
I would recommend McAfee Firewall. It has the ability to block specific ports. Simple and userfriendly..
-
McAfee forever
-
Sygate in my opinion.
-
sygate personal firewall is my no1 choice. Very lightweight, works with every anti virus program. Can be a bit intrusive but it is worth it
-
zonealarm is the best firewall without doubt. Second i think so comes Outpost...Top reviewers rate ZA as no.1 in all the test. But they say free option Comodo firewall is also good
-
Been using Sygate for a very long time... Hasn't let me down...
Getting a bit aged, but as mentioned by somebody else. It's not bloated and runs well with all my other programs.
-
Outpost Firewall Pro (by Agnitum) is a pretty solid firewall.
-
I think it still depend on the system
-
the best is pctools firewall
-
I'm currently just using my windows defender, but Zone Alarm was good before i had multiple conflicts with AVG and mcafee. i also use a hardware firewall in my router.
-
I USE ZONE ALARM
-
The best is : several
For instance protect your windows 7 gaming pc with one of the firewall apps mentioned in other posts and secondly setup an old pc with two nics to act as a router with Linux and firewall Shorewall installed and place this pc in front of your game rig. Install webmin for easy web configuration and set inbound and outbound rules. Third your internet gateway will have a packet filter as well.
-
what are the pros/cons of a software firewall vs a hardware firewall?
-
I still use v8.5 Desktop Firewall and it has defended me well so far!!!
-
i really like sunbelt personal firewall.it's very straightforward and simple to deploy.i had been using ZA in the past only because newer builds tend to be a memory hog and contain buggy code:o(
-
For XP-Systems I can recommend McAfee Firewall Corp. 8.5.
For Vista and Win 7 I can recommend Outpost Firewall Pro.
-
what should i do if my windows firewall automatic update never works
-
I used Zone alarm, but was cumbersome to configure and blocked normal internet access frequently. Try Comodo firewall, its free and works well I think!
-
I use firewall because personal firewall software is to prevent identity theft and the lengthy process of restoring your credit. Your financial data and password lists may all be stored inside your computer. Even a novice hacker with the right tools could easily get into your system to copy these without detection.
-
COMODO is light and powerful.
-
A combination of Spybot Teatimer and Zonealarm freeware on top of CA AV Enterprise\Sygate FW at work fended off a major virus I downloaded straight off the internet - kudo to Spybot and ZA!!
-
Does anyone have a detailed list of the McAfee Firewall features with screen shots of the rules you can create etc...?
-
I would say that Traditional firewalls focus on blocking simple threats and intrusions. Business grade Firewalls have added Unified Threat Management ) services such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, intrusion prevention, content filtering and even some anti-spam services to enhance to threat protection.
-
I have used Symantec, McAfee, and Kaspersky. Lately I have tended to lean more towards McAfee as it is fairly lightweight when not active and has good alerting.
-
Many reckon Zone Alarm and Comodo Firewall are the best firewall. But which one is the best in overall performance and does security work well?
-

In my opinion ZA is better...
-
i think widows firewall is enough for normal users
-
goood
-
as for me usually I use "ProteMac NetMine" as a firewall...
-
i allso think likel uzimenfis
-
Me too
-
Avira is the best firewall.Although there are many firewell softwares but Avira has good attack detection capability. One of the major features of Avira Premium Security Suite is a powerful firewall. This inclusion is valuable works as a two-way component monitors all incoming and outgoing activity through a wired or wireless. The firewall protects against hackers and treacherous strong enough to cripple your computer. Avira's firewall is very easy to use and comes with adjustable tray for easy customization.

McAfee firewall is hard to use !
-
I will go with comodo firewall. It is the great firewall.
-
Well, from my experience, it goes..
Advenced Users with knoledge and server: McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention
Average Home User: Windows Advenced firewall (the one from WinServer2003 and ahead)
-
The Windows systems has provide the best Firewall is under,
1) ESET Smart Security (Shareware)
2) ZoneAlarm Free Firewall (Freeware)
3) Comodo Firewall Pro (Freeware)
4) ZoneAlarm Free Firewall (Freeware)
-
as for me usually I use ...... as a firewall...
I checked this program, it is a kind of Mac spy software.
How do you use it as firewall.
-
please can you tell me where can i find the mcafee firewall? standalone... my av is mcafee virusscan enterprise 8.5i. i know it will be discontinued but can tell about the firewall?

Hi Duar,
McAfee firewall version 8.5 isn't supported since 2003.: http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/support-eol-archive.aspx (http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/support-eol-archive.aspx)
Now it has been integrated into McAfee Host IPS.
If you're looking for some FREE and good solution, check these two FWs:
- Comodo FREE Firewall: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,764.0.html (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,764.0.html)
- ZoneAlarm FREE Firewall: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,26.0.html (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,26.0.html)
-
There's also a new Firewall-Only HIPS 8.0, I don't know much details though.
-
thx, everyone
regards Duar97
-
I am use now Zone alarm Free and It is one of the best firewalls for me. :police:
-
The three best free firewalls for Windows are

-
I think McAfee Desktop FireWall 8.5 is one off best Firewall ever!
-

I agree with you pal... I still use them. ;)
Can you imagine that McAfee stop support for last version in 2003.: http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/support-eol-archive.aspx (http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/support-eol-archive.aspx)
However, I'll probably use them on my Destop's XP till 2014. O0

Thanx from your information :) I think that all haven't even known from the whole matter!

I posted this elsewhere just a few days ago. I hope no one will mind if I just do a paste;
free 'Online Armor'
I find it harder to recommend products today than how it used to be. With so many sec tools available now (mostly scams), it is harder to pick and choose. Also, when recommending products, the user abilities must be a consideration.
I can't recommend the tools I use as an end point solution because they are designed for admin and not the casual user...like the Snort IDS(host based). This leaves me a little bit out of touch with common use.
However, I've been doing some recent informal testing of some of the more respected tools in the HIPS category. Of the products examined so far, I find OnlineArmor to be the most user friendly and with equal or better HIPS protection. It also has a strong user base and plenty of help and refs.
HIPS filtering/firewalling is essential today. Remember; " If it can't initiate, it can't infect."
BTW OnlineArmor also has what I consider a prerequisite for any HIPS tool, a 'learning mode'.
I think that's about 2c worth.
-
Thanks Mike.
"Because of" your recommendation, I'll add (sticked) "Online Armor Free" Topic to SCforum's Firewall area (with Comodo & ZoneAlarm). ;)

to end all discussions (which I didn't read, for I don't like Firewall :>)... Proactive Security Challenge 64 awards http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge-64/results.php (http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge-64/results.php))
Link by "Fubar" on http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/sterjo-portable-firewall28/ (http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/sterjo-portable-firewall28/) .
Only TWO products get a recommended - ALL others FAIL (miserably). Can you guess which two?
This is especially worrisome when you look closely at the players that fail. All big names. Avast. Kaspersky. Norton. G-Data. McAfee. Rising. The list goes on :(
Online Armor was not mentioned in this test.
Detailed reports are downloadable as pdf. Reading the details might even change my mind about firewalls... They do seem to be a very good add-on for virusprotection. The nasties not catched by the regular antivirus engine, might be catched by the firewall. I would not have expected this. But us Fubar points out righteously, the best firewall solutions come with 100 a 150MB of binary code... It must do something ;p
Time to take a critical look at the "pinned" solutions with scforum? ; )
Enjoy!

I don't think I would have rated Comodo that high. I also don't put much faith in comparitive testing;
Thoughts on Anti-Malware Product Comparison Testing (http://forums.voiceofthepublic.com/smf2/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=1)
I haven't looked at Comodo since Oct 2010. I found it's HIPS features to be quite good. However, it employs a common signature scanner that brought many F/Ps and faulty removal routines.
As always, I recommend that users seek trained pro help when cleaning up any unwanted wares. Faulty removal and removal of false targets can literally trash the sys.
You might find this interesting. :) After whitelisting/ignoring all the F/Ps in Comodo, I still had an interesting scan result; http://forums.voiceofthepublic.com/smf2/index.php?topic=148.0 (http://forums.voiceofthepublic.com/smf2/index.php?topic=148.0)

The best Firewall at the market is:
1. Cut the powercord,
2. disassemble the battery,
3. cut the internet cable,
4. unplug the GSM, 3G, 4G (or what ever) modem and router from the internet that you have connection to, disassemble also all hard drives.
5. Go to your local (Swiss or other land with high bank security outside US and EU) Bank and lock in everything in you rented Banksafe.
This is not 100% prof but it is currently one of the safest Firewall on the market. ;)
Important to know you compromise's the system again if you or someone else open the Banksafe or move it to a other country or a other regime.

I heard that Comodo Firewall is the best firewall today. Comodo Firewall is a network security system that monitors and controls network traffic based on predetermined security rules. In addition, the cost of this firewall is only $30 a year. I have a modified firewall installed on the computer that networklondon.co.uk (https://www.networklondon.co.uk/it-support-essex/) developed for me. I work online, so cyber security is very important to me. I have never had a virus on my computer in the last year.

Now, please share with other SCF Members yours experiences, recommendations...?!
thank for ur sharing
