I have a question, I just did a motherboard upgrade this week, hoping to squeeze out some more juice and be able to crank up my favourite games. Here is the PC as it stands now

Asus P5Q motherboard with Intel's P45 chipset
500GB HDD 72,000rpm
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz
4GB DDR2-800 RAM running Dual Channel
nVidia 9600GT with 512MB of GDDR3 RAM

I thought this system would pack quite a punch and yet Fallout 3 still lags with everything on high?

What would be the weak link in the system? Why would it be still lagging?

HI BF,

sorry for delay with (my) answer... I was left town for few days, business...  ;)

Your PC have excellent configuration and I'm 99% sure that this is more than enough for this game (Fallout 3).

My first question (recommendation) is, did you install proper update for this game??

http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/downloads/updates-v1.7updatenotes-US.html

Please check this first and after that we will "investigate" this more.

Regards,

S.

Yeah I thought it would of been powerful enough to run with every setting on highest, there is still one setting I havent turned all the way up. Yes I am running the latest 1.7 patch. I also have all 5 DLC's installed. Also when playing I disconnect from internet and Run IObit's "Game Booster 1.21" to close all unnecessary services and applications.

I find this possible solution for your problem:

Quote

Fallout 3 Freezing randomly in the game, sometimes permanently.

1. Click Start
2. Click “All Programs” (or just Programs, depending on the version of Windows, whether they’re using “classic,” etc.)
3. Go to the ffdshow folder.
4. Click “Audio decoder configuration.”
5. In the left hand pane, click “Info & debug.” This is the second entry in the list.
6. In the right hand pane, near the bottom, find a check box labelled “Don’t use ffdshow in:”
7. Check that box, and in the text box underneath (it lights up when you check the check box), add “fallout3.exe” (don’t include the quotes). If there is already something in that box, put a semi-colon ( ; ) after what’s already there, and fallout3.exe after that. Do NOT use spaces, since ffdshow will think that’s part of the filename. A valid entry would be “explorer.exe;fallout3.exe” (without quotes).
8. Finally, click “Ok” and start Fallout 3.

It's worth to try...  ;)

Its not exactly freezing as it is just lagging. (btw I did go and check ffdshow and it was disabled for fallout 3) Although I did get several blue screen's of death and the file it was referring to was nv4disp.dll which is the video driver, correct? So I checked my drivers, I have the latest forceware installed ver. 190.38.

Yes, "nv4disp.dll" is display driver.

But if I get right, latest driver version is: 190.62

Please check this link: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_190.62_whql.html

I finally got to test it out (I have been virus fighting)  and the driver seemed to fix the blue screen of deaths, but the game is still quite slow. Is there any software I can run to see exactly how many fps I get with Fallout 3?

Also how am I able to get my karma higher? and more stars?

I have been thinking about your problem.  I was wondering what other processes are you running when you are running this game.  If you haven't tried out this autoruns.exe program I have recently spoke about, it might be a good idea.  To give you an idea what this does, it tells you what is currently running on your computer with better discriptions then task manager.  So give it a try, you might be surprised what you find.  You could have some software in the background doing some major processing that you don't need done.  I really don't know the problem you are seeing but maybe this will give you some insight on what your computer is doing.  Also you might consider doing a memory test on the new ram you have put in and on your video card.  I recently build a new system and it kept rebooting on me.  Stuff was laggy as well, come to find out that the video memory was bad so I had to get a new video card.  These are just some troubleshooting ideas to find the problem.  Hope they help.  Good luck in finding the issue.
