The firewall is like your door at your house or apartment. It's to stop unwanted to get in or at least make it harder.

The Antivirus is like your home alarm, to notify that someone try to get in and try to call the police (you) to do some thing and to clean up after someone have been there."

Is something unclear?

You need both a Antivirus and a Firewall if you want to be secure!

But many Antivirus solution for home user are selling as package with both a Antivirus and Firewall normally called  something like: total protection, Antivirus solution, Internet security or something like that.
That is the product you should look at if you are not an experience user or some that want to build there own package with other combinations link a Antivirus like MS-Security Essential and the built in MS-Firewall as the simplest way and cheapest way. For home user it's free.

Basically Firewall and Anti virus both are different things. Firewall that protects your PC from any unauthorized access or invalid login it does not make much protection against the  viruses in contrast antivirus done the reverse thing. Most of the Anti viruses now provide facility of Firewall.

There are many types of virus present over internet. Firewall and antivirus are two different things. Firewall stops virus to enter in the system. And if by default any type of virus enter such as Trojan Horse then antivirus remove them.

The anti-virus and firewalls are must-have protection. Anti-virus for Mac detects both Mac and Windows malware. Anti-Virus and Firewall for 32-bit Windows.  Firewall and Anti-virus is now Comodo Internet Security.

If you have the anti-virus then no need to use firewall because it is enough but in certain situation  the virus  is not deleted by the anti-virus then the firewall is used to protect your pc.

can I have both fire-wall and Antivirus at the same time on my computer?

Yes, it's recommended to have installed one Antivirus and one Firewall.

Wrong thing is if you have two Antiviruses or Firewalls at the same time.

Only situation where U can take off windows firewall is, if u have install some Internet Security software.
Generally its contains both...Antivirus and firewall together and then is desirable take windows own filewall off! :)

Antivirus and firewall both are compulsory for our computer. Firewall and Antivirus software work together to keep our PC safe from viruses. I use comodo firewall and kaspersky antivirus.
