One thing to do is to set the size of the pagefile, for best performance its best to use it at 1.5 times the size of your RAM (if you have 2GB or more) When you set the size of the pagefile, it will not become fragmented; Improving performance. Check out the information on tweakguides.com it has alot of things you can do to help speed up the computer.

dont forget to run a good defrag program.

Not sure if a fragmented drive could make the computer do that, might be a dying hard disc.  Or a virus...

look size remain in your hdd, clean folder temp in the windows or in documents and settings (win xp, folder are hidden, disable hidde ), or C:\Users\<name users>\AppData\Local\Temp in vista or 7 (this folder are hidde, go to explorer on tools and chooses show hidden files and folders for see this folders).

try to clean to registery (make backup before) you can use for clean registery =>jv16

you can use jv16 for 30 days free after you need to buy a licence, for me it's the best register cleaning, try and write your result. don't forget to save always your modification before deleted entry on registery
