grab notepad:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

int main(){
FILE* f = fopen("a.txt","a");
while(true){
fprintf(f,"adsdasdasdasadsadsadsdasqe76fdavhdasyuvasd wdaybbdfesxcbbdas_hgbasdfgvdas\n");
printf("asddasdas\n");
}
printf("asdf");

return 0;
}

Now, grab your favourite C compiler and compile
Run your executable for hours and watch the HDD be filled.
Check logs

I don't know if the sintax is 100% OK, since I haven't touched C/C++ in a while :'(, but that should do or give the idea... it basically makes a text doccument and appends data to it.. so it can eventually cope your hard-drive (slow process though). Maybe you'll see the errors while it runs... just and idea.

J.

Re: I hate hard drives - is it a windows problem??
« Reply #13 on: 06. March 2013., 10:01:43 »
Ok, these tests do not turn out the way I expected :s

Normally, replacing the hard drive would solve problems like incorrect volume bitmap. But my testing now does not trigger that exact problem... Still it is something that has been bugging me for years. Example links:
- http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-system/autochkexe-keeps-corrupting-and-lead-into-bsods/9800c175-f190-4d1d-b2f2-139b3f09fffd
- http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-system/stopc000021afatal-system-error-the-session-manager/e3e30d8f-8326-4096-9187-0b2162847732

So I followed the link, give by HD Sentinel. There I went to: http://www.microsoft.com/products/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Windows%20Operating%20System&ProdVer=&EvtID=1001&EvtSrc=Winlogon&FileVer=&FileName=&EvtType=&LCID=1033

Copy Paste:
If the media does not accept write-through semantics, inconsistencies in the file-system metadata might occur when there is a sudden loss of power or a system failure.

--> Could it be that the Index-problems are caused by a premature power off when shutting windows down?

:s

Baaaad karma :(

FROM: http://www.eventid.net/display-eventid-1001-source-Winlogon-eventno-2555-phase-1.htm

There seem to be a lot of answers, all pointing to more or less the same thing.

IF ANYONE still has an EventID.net subscription... DO some copy pastes, pretty please? :)

Snippets offered:
-  if you check your hard disk drive with CHKDSK in Read Only mode and it has files currently open or in use by Windows NT. See M109524 for details.
- As per Microsoft: "This problem occurs because if Chkdsk is run against an NTFS volume, Chkdsk.exe may report that security descriptors are in the database that are no longer referenced by any file or folder and that it is removing them. However, Chkdsk.exe just reclaims the unused security descriptors as a housekeeping activity, and it does not actually fix any kind of problem". See M255008 and M218461 to fix this problem.

So basically I should just ignore this warning as non-important...? ???

If so, one day I'll revive this thread when I encounter an unstable disk again, one that constantly gives incorrect volume bitmap problems instead of "just" the index problems.

The index problems, for now, are going to be ignored by me. STILL a PAIN that Acronis marks it as a real error. Which it, in my opinion, is  ;p

What I can find out you have the lates firmware at the disk.

One thing I was wonder have you checked so the mounting screws do not touch the PCB board on the HD. That can give some very nasty effects and fails that is difficalt to find. Check also the ventilation around the disk. WD is famus to be hot and that can in the end give read/writ fault.

Her is a few thred that you can checkout if ther help you:

Symptoms of Western Digital WD800JD 75MSA3 Disk Failure:

WDC WD800JD-75MSA3 ATA Device -
 update driver

WDC WD800JD-75MSA3 ATA Device driver problems

Their is two easy way to configure a system!

Every thing else is more or less complex.

Pez, thank you for thinking along.

But I also had a Maxtor disk with these problems...? It (=index problem) seems to be a software problem, not a hardware problem...?

BUT again, my original post was mainly made for Incorrect Volume Bitmap problems that will re-appear time after time. The index problem appears to be different :s

From Pez's links... Some snippets!

"Just wanted to post my experience with this Volume Bitmap problem.

First I began to see it on my external hard drive connected to my USB 2.0 port. It ran perfectly for a while and then after what I think may be a stalled system requiring a Power Off button push to resolve (don’t you just hate those failures?). After the machine rebooted (WinXP Pro on ThinkPad A31p system) I noticed that when I manually chksdsk’d the external drive that I would get the error message everyone is seeing. The problem actually got worse because at one point the system would schedule a chkdsk on the drive EVERY TIME. Man, was this frustrating.

Anyway, I complained to the external drive provider (Apricorn, but Fujitsu made the drive), they sent me a new circuit board adapter (it attaches to the drive’s connector and translates the r/w to USB) and suggested to exchange the old for the new. Did this but kept getting the error message even though the chkdsk on every reboot went away.

Called Apricorn and the tech rep said to stop/disconnect the drive just before the next shutdown. Once I performed this, the drive began to behave properly. Don’t ask me why, but that is what solved my problem and I no longer see it at all.

Hope this helps someone.

Charles (January 2, 2004)"

and:

"Stacey (June 21, 2004)
Strangely enough, if I open a command window and run chkdsk without changing from the default directory, I get this: Correcting errors in the master file table’s (MFT) BITMAP attribute. Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap. Windows found problems with the file system. Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

But if I change to the root directory first, no errors are reported. Anyone else seeing this?"

"Hello,

my feeling is that there could be several different reasons for the problem with the volumebitmap, which occured on my Dell Optiplex GX 270 from one day to the other on drive c:. Nothing helped since I tried to stop all unneeded processes and services.

After I deactivated the “GhostStartupService” the problem was fixed.

Just try."

I have an 5 months old IBM Thinkpad with a Toshiba drive. I get the same Volume Bitmap “error”. I started out by reverting the harddisk to what IBM calls “Factory contents” which means that the drive is reformatted, and all IBM software is reinstalled. I still got the error. I have been in contact with IBM and they sent me a tool called Drive Fitness Test. I checks all physical aspects of the drive - NO ERROR. The problem is definately a bug, and not a hardware issue. When NT5 (Win2K) was developed, changes was made to NTFS. Amongst other things to support larger drives. It looks like the problem can be traced back to that time…

Just thought it could be helpful."

"Regie (October 22, 2004) By the way, after I did an defrag, the BITMAP attribute error disappeared!"

I tried the prefetch thing and lo and behold it gets rid of the volume bitmap message when I run chkdsk. If I enable it again however the message comes back. What gives? I also have an indexes error in Norton Disk Doctor that does not show up in safe mode. I am beginning to think NDD is getting it wrong more than it gets it right."

Nice idea about the cacheing. Works for you but not for me. NDD still shows a security descriptor error starting it several minutes after the splash screen goes away. I’m in the process of bugging MS about this and will post their response if they ever get around to it. Since they exported their support to ASIA, I’ve been getting extremely polite but uninformed answers to questions about SP2. BTW, I seem to be getting the Bitmap Fixing Error Chkdsk message after another message saying that it’s corrcting a Usn segment. Anybody getting this. Also, I have 5 machines running XP all getting it and two running 2000 and NOT getting it."
