Title: The Best AntiVirus ?!
Post by: Samker on 18. May 2007., 21:08:04

Hi SCF Visitors,

what do You think which Anti-Virus is The Best one and why?

Personally I use  McAfee Enterprise 8.5 about two years and till now it work perfect. This version have excellent protection and low using of PC resources.

Also believe me I love to surf everywhere (mostly risky sites).  ;)

Come on people tell us Yours opinions and don't forget to Vote in Poll (above)!?

I use Norton, REALLY trong protection, but extremly Process & Memory use.

That's first reason why I don't like Norton and second is that I "pickup" some viruses with them.

My Favorite is McAfee as I said earlier.  8)

I don't bother changing Anti-virus, i've tried it once on someone elses pc, i was setting up his pc for cash, & he wanted something stabil as anti-virus!

I like AVG because im not a risky user, it works fine for me. If you take bigger risks then Macafee or Norton360, SuperAnti Spyware if you have plenty processor speed, memory capabilitiy. They are "all" good,0it really depends on what you do and what system you have.

NIS2008 is the best antivirus the other antivirus software.. without having a problem like NIS2007 and can detect in silent mode for spyware and virus. however, no crack available until now. try using in windows vista.. it's cool

I like Norton360. It has an easy install and is strong(even at default levels). At first I had trouble with it in letting low threat items through but then learned that for commercial reasons, it is set to ignore them. A good example would be tracking cookies and how they're removal can disable some programs. All I had to do was go into the advanced settings and PRESTO my system is now mostly bulletproof. I also like it's ease of use. ANYONE can run it effectively right away without alot of knowledge or the danger of hurting their system.

Been using Mcafee for years now, really satisfied with the works (just too much DAT updates to download nowadays <115MB>)...

Norton also does the work but eats too much resources.

Same all other Anti-viruses can do the work, but the point is, all these AV software are only "good and effective" until the last defined virus. So be aware to download the updates!

In my system is the sure thing: McAfee Viruscan 8.5.0i + DeepFreeze. It's OVER-the-EDGE people!

Keeps me totally away from viruses and systems' crash!

Used Mcafee V8.0.I on a number of machines for years. Good product. When V8.5I came along we switched and have been very happy with the product. V8.5I adds many additional features but still requires additional MalWare protection

Expanding slightly from just antivirus, tried the Symantec Endpoint product. This product has antivirus, antispyware, and a remedial firewall.

We were not as happy with the detection part of this product, and the firewall had much fewer control than something like Zonealarm.

Be careful, if you thought Mcafee products were difficult to install and eliminate all of the components, Symantec is one of the toughest to get rid of.

I have found a combination of spybot, adaware, malawarebytes and super anti spyware with 8.5i is just about perfect.

the best antivirus is the one that is installed in your pc right now.. cause if it's not, you'll be thinking out to remove it.
almost antivirus are the same.. the competition are, "who is updated?"

im using mcafee 8.5i antivirus+antispyware+hip

Nice comments everyone!

It's true that we get rid the ones which is not worth our while and there are reasons.

It stays there because we know it is the best as long as its satisfy our needs and yet being effective.

But does it really satisfy us of just being updated? I don't think so.
We tend to update our anti-virus software whenever new viruses found and defined (favoring those who are not being infected).
Still if not, systems get infected!

For me it is more than satisfaction in regards... Be "Pro-Active" is the best thing to do!

For me, McAfee is the best. I'm using it since 1999 and its very great.
The good thing here is that it does not take memory resources of your pc and easily detect the virus. Just make sure your data is up to date.

It's look like here are only McAfee fans?

Voting Poll also show same results, but I know that Kaspersky, Norton & NOD32 are also very popular.

What's reason for this here at SCF?

Yes you got a right, because of that we often turn off Heuristic & PUP Real-Time Protection for older PCs.

But I think that it's same thing with for example KIS 2009 or Norton products??

i'm using mcafee enterprise, the same thing we use at work.  i used to use symantec corp antivirus which was good aswell (not as resource hungry as the old norton ones :) ).

AVG free didnt seem very good after installing symantec that found a couple of viruses AVG missed.  this was a few years back so things might have changed?
Title: Re: The Best AntiVirus ?!
Post by: Samker on 08. March 2009., 21:59:29
I was also ex-user of Symantec Corp. AV, last version which I use is I think 9 or 10. That version was have problem with detection of Adwares and Spywares... You have a right about PC recourse using, much much better than Norton version 2005-2006 (in these years I was using Symantec Corp.).

In my opinion also Symantec is better than AVG, but also true is that AVG is Best FREE AntiVirus solution right now.

Do you agree??

I like NOD 32 from ESET.  As a gamer and system builder I want the lightest weight AV in terms of CPU utilization ...after years of the competition, it's a noticeable improvement in boot time and visibly less junk running in Task Manager.  Works perfectly and seamlessly.

I know that NOD 32 is very fast, but did they enable option for Automatic Update?

As I remember, some old version (probably FREE) need Manual Start of Updates.

i much like the mcafee8.5i.. im secured especially from "pc-modifying viruses"

nod32 is a fast scanner, yet it is vulnerable from local viruses like here in Philippines.. Although it's good, i observered it is vulnerable sometime..

yeah, yeah the best free is avira.. with cool sounds!

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Version 8.5i for sure.  Great due to the fact that it does a great job at preventing any changes to your computer.  Kind of a pain though because it doesn't tell you that it has blocked a change from happening, but if you can overlook that you will love it.

It is really difficult to Know what is the best anti-virus for Windows, because in the end the factors are many that help us to decide us by one of them, as they can be if it is free or of payment, its price in the case of payment, the comparative ones, the recommendations of the friend, the luck, Mcafee is very good and nod32 and karpesky also

I agree that Mcafee VS 8.5 is the best commercial anti virus today. However, I loved Norton corporate client, it was lighter then mcafee, allowed to scan in safe mode and kept my systems protected better then any other anti virus program.
My favorite free anto virus is AVG.

McAfee is good, but NOT that good. In our environment which runs real time applications (Telephony under Win 2003 & Citrix servers )it really causes havoc even after excluding the appropriate applications and the database. The CPU utilisation goes sky high during .DAT updates and stops  applications without any warning or even corrupts them at times.

I am thinking of trialing out 8.5.0i patch 7, I understand there is a hot fix out which reduces the overall memory, however this remains to be seen.

Next one I want to check out is 8.7, but hear this is just as memory hungary.
If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Appreciate if the administrator can provide the password for patch 7.

Cmistry, I was already send you PM with info. about pass. receive.

First of all, it's better for you to install direct Patch 8 (just browse SCF better and you will find it...)..., basically you only need 9 more posts at scForum (like this one about "Best AV") and I'll send you pass. via PM just like for other SCF Members.

Hope this is clear now?

Symantec Security Response encourages all users and administrators to adhere to the following basic security "best practices":

Use a firewall to block all incoming connections from the Internet to services that should not be publicly available. By default, you should deny all incoming connections and only allow services you explicitly want to offer to the outside world.
Enforce a password policy. Complex passwords make it difficult to crack password files on compromised computers. This helps to prevent or limit damage when a computer is compromised.
Ensure that programs and users of the computer use the lowest level of privileges necessary to complete a task. When prompted for a root or UAC password, ensure that the program asking for administration-level access is a legitimate application.
Disable AutoPlay to prevent the automatic launching of executable files on network and removable drives, and disconnect the drives when not required. If write access is not required, enable read-only mode if the option is available.
Turn off file sharing if not needed. If file sharing is required, use ACLs and password protection to limit access. Disable anonymous access to shared folders. Grant access only to user accounts with strong passwords to folders that must be shared.
Turn off and remove unnecessary services. By default, many operating systems install auxiliary services that are not critical. These services are avenues of attack. If they are removed, threats have less avenues of attack.
If a threat exploits one or more network services, disable, or block access to, those services until a patch is applied.
Always keep your patch levels up-to-date, especially on computers that host public services and are accessible through the firewall, such as HTTP, FTP, mail, and DNS services.
Configure your email server to block or remove email that contains file attachments that are commonly used to spread threats, such as .vbs, .bat, .exe, .pif and .scr files.
Isolate compromised computers quickly to prevent threats from spreading further. Perform a forensic analysis and restore the computers using trusted media.
Train employees not to open attachments unless they are expecting them. Also, do not execute software that is downloaded from the Internet unless it has been scanned for viruses. Simply visiting a compromised Web site can cause infection if certain browser vulnerabilities are not patched.
If Bluetooth is not required for mobile devices, it should be turned off. If you require its use, ensure that the device's visibility is set to "Hidden" so that it cannot be scanned by other Bluetooth devices. If device pairing must be used, ensure that all devices are set to "Unauthorized", requiring authorization for each connection request. Do not accept applications that are unsigned or sent from unknown sources.
For further information on the terms used in this document, please refer to the Security Response glossary.

I bought a laptop and started using it. I had no internet connection. For first 4 months i used it without any antivirus. Then i installed Norton antivirus and uploaded its latest patch through internet connection. I was able to heal and delete a number of viruses.
But it made system quite a bit slow. Then I got internet connection. I uninstalled Nortan and installed McAfee 8.5i and kept updating it daily. Now my laptop is working very fine and catches any virus in any external mediums very efficiently. I have patch 6 uploaded for it.
I recommend McAfee for others also to use it.

Mcafee Enterprise version works great with no issues. It is not a memory hog as Norton. But please be careful of downloading the software from Comcast, it has a tendency to crash or give a blue screen of death. It is the internet security software + virus scan. Couple of people whom I know did go and download from the site, sadly they had to install everything from scratch. Better to get the software from this SCforum.info

I have been using mcafee 8.5i on my work laptop since 2 yrs up until 3 months ago, when i changed to mcafee 8.7 and i have just installed patch 1 (the 8.7 sometimes spikes the CPU to 100%, will see how that goes after patch1)

At my Home PCs (three, one for each of us three brothers) I have mcafee 8.5i+spyware module and Comodo firewall, all three machines are connected via ADSL/router and all of us use USB drives to get videos/mp3s/software/VB.NET projects and what not from PCs who are barely functioning :D and we are yet to get infected.

PS. I have a USB Cruzer Titanium drive with U3 for which I have purchased a licensed Avast! version (it resides on the USB drive and scans the USB on-access and the host computer as soon as you plug it in) and It is has been virus free since 2 yrs :D

I have been using McAfee Enterprise for the past few years.  First version 8.0 (so many patches), then 8.5, then 8.7, only to go back to 8.5 when Vista x64 would not recognize 8.7 correctly.

I currently use 8.5i patch 7 on a variety of operating systems (Windows Server 2003, XP, 2000) and it has never let me down.  The AntiSpyware option makes it that much more useful.  Fortunately, it looks like patch 8 addresses the problem of quarantining cookies ad nauseum.

I'm using McAfee Enterprise 8.7i and haven't had many problems with it.  You can really lock down a machine if you know the user will get it infected, or you can let it allow more things.

I must say no one antiivirus is perfect. When one antivirus unable to find virus in pc sometimes another antivirus may find that. Each antivirus uses its own definitions to identify viruses. There databases for virus related informations are different. But the one antivirus which protects your pc should be updated regularly and it should have numbers of viruses in database. Also it should not consume more resources.

I'm a long time AVG free edition user and I have not had any problems. It's a bit clunky from time to time and the last upgrade (8.0) was very invasive and installed some crap on Firefox which I was very unhappy about, but past that it's been working well enough. I'd recommend it for anyone running Windows without any very serious security concerns.

My personal preference happens to be Kaspersky. However, ESET Nod32 usually ranks slightly higher due to Kaspersky being a little more sensitive and returning a "False Positive" occasionaly. As far as Norton / Symantec goes. They test well against known malware. But, they suck at detecting new malware. (less than 35% effective) Check out Virus Bulletins RAP (reactive and proactive) test results.    http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/rap-index.xml (http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/rap-index.xml)
ESET, Kaspersky, Sophos, and Webroot were among the top scorers. As for the "FREE" anti-virus utilities Avira and AVG pretty much tied while scoring high marks (better than both McAffee and Norton/Symantec) and Avast was only a "hair" less effective.  Like Joe Friday said "Just the facts"

Also, PLEASE REMEMBER we are discussing Anti-Virus only. Internet security Suites are another thing altogether.

McAfee VirusScan 8.7i. One great feature is that you can lock your PC down by enabling additional rules (eg - prevent svchost spoofing etc.....). Well for me I find it much better than the previous antivirus program that  I had been using. It don't missed catching a potential threat, updates itself easily and has great customer support and a variety of unique options. I really love using Nod 32.

Hi I am also using the same version but I am facing the problem of auto update, showing message at the time of auto update that "Failed to initialize Common Updater System. Make sure the McAfee Framework Service is running. McAfee Common Framework returned error 80080005@2". Can you help me please?

Hi wanivishal,

of course that We'll help you... but since this Topic is for discussion about "The Best Antivirus", you'll need to open NEW (your own) Topic in SCF's "PC Help Center": http://scforum.info/index.php/board,16.0.html (http://scforum.info/index.php/board,16.0.html) with all information related to mentioned problem with your McAfee AV.

Ok a Quick update and Im about to go back on my Decision to use McAfee,

Ok main point is that that Windows 7 Wont work with V8.5 ok so you upgrade to V8.7 no problem next problem McAfee Firewall wont work with Win 7 as that has been replaced by McAfee HIPS ok that's fine too, what's not fine is that there is no WebUpdate method for HIPS as it is desgined for Group Policy - NOT COOL!

This was one of the reasons I have moved away from McAfee now and I wont bore you with the other reasons.

My new HOT Product of the Year has to be ESET Smart Security, A verly unknown but Very powerfull AV Suite Inc Firewall and Anti-Malware Protection for your E-mail's and it also has the cool looking Robots on it's splash screen from the Film I-Robot and no this was not the reason for choosing it! ::)

Not only does the Software have a TINY and I mean TINY memory footprint you can disable ALL windows Defender and Firewall services e.t.c essentually reducing the System load by removing 3 odd services running for the Price of 1! now that's COOL!

I wished other AV Vendors took a leaf out of the this Manufactures Coders book as we have all become too accustomed to accepting the fact the AV prodcucts need to have a fairly substantial footprint to be effective - NOT TRUE

All I can say is give it a go, it's cheap as chips for a years membership and if you want customisable setups you can actually get the AV seperately if you have your own Firewall and Malware Solutions. - http://www.eset.co.uk/ (http://www.eset.co.uk/) it even has a MAC solution for the die hards.

All The Best..

If I ever change McAfee...  ??? ... next choice will be ESET (NOD32).

By the way, my old Friend "amko_sa": http://scforum.info/index.php?action=profile;u=3 (http://scforum.info/index.php?action=profile;u=3) is also a really big fan of NOD32. Every time when We speak about AV solutions, He say that NOD32 is current No1. in AV World.

However, I must to admit that I have installed "ESET Online Scanner": http://www.eset.com/home/products/online-scanner/ (http://www.eset.com/home/products/online-scanner/) (of course it doesn't have Real-Time protection) and time to time I scan whole PC, just to be sure that everything is Ok (double check because of my electronic payments - credit cards). ;)

Well, I prefer AVG Anti-Virus in my Laptop. AVG Anti-Virus software is an effective performer with well-considered features. It array awful in tests conducted at absolute software testing labs. AVG has Identity Protection features, but they are limited to US residents only. This feature can be access through a web browser toolbar.

Some thoughts and further reading with links, here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,7429.0.html (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,7429.0.html)

In my day-to-day friendships, I see mainly 2 anti-virus programs installed by 'regular, non-savvy, I-got-money-and-I-don't-use-my-comp-for-real-anyways'-peoples;
1. Norton
2. AVG

I used to be Avast ALL THE WAY, and would NOT install Norton, McAfee or any other payed anti-virus (Kaspesky; only in those DOS-days;p). Avast, according to MANY official tests and according to user forums, has the best detection rates out there WITHOUT compromising usability. When you know computers & use warez; Avast was (is????) the way to go.

Nowadays I'm sad, looking and completely clueless ;s

I don't like Norton (money), resources look high but don't bother too much (honest is honest;p). Mostly I don't like it due to false positives and its awful way to disable protection COMPLETELY. You never seem to know what's still running and blocking 'shit' that isn't shit but nice candy ; ). Also, at least in the old days, it was a number one reason for internet connectivity problems. Ironic, I know ; )

McAfee just sucks all the way, just like AVG. And I hardly ever see it installed with anyone (contrary to the polls here!).

AVG is, in the Netherlands at least, I think the most installed antivirus software. It's free, and it takes no effort whatsoever to keep it activated. And it sucks, but nobody cares, for they don't understand or use computers anyways. Just hope it doesn't remove one of those handy microsoft system files... : >

Peace!

Devvie

Just installed & tested Comodo antivirus.

My experiences... Looks techie enough, that's good. It has a strange system where you have to decide which 'security' level your system currently is in. I put it to Trusted computer, knowing I have no warez installed. I might better not have done that though, after a reboot everything I did was suspect - even opening taskmanager ;p

Also it uses a lot of RAM. This MIGHT be due to the fact that it was a 'first run' situation. One should test for themselves how this keeps up in time. I consider 80MB too much. free.pctools.com is another I tried again, and the same as Comodo they hog about 200MB of memory. Unacceptable, for me that is ;p

Also boot times went up by a minute or more, effectively at least doubling boot time. Again, first time boot so this might improve. Test & REPOST yourself ;p

BIGGEST problem and MAIN reason to remove it was the scanning process. This was the worst I've seen in years. After running for 5 hours, I only was at 2%. This morning, it was literally stuck at 13%. Pausing or stopping gave error that it ran out of system resources!! Sigh. Funk that! So I removed it (and kept their browser with build-in Secure DNS, which actually works these days :>).

So two down, see what's out there next... Till repost and...

Peace!

Everybody keeps raving about NOD32.

NOD32 Free is an obsolete AV. You cannot download it anymore from the official site. No new free product came in it's place.

So NOD32 is out - it's a relic.

Also, it never really got my love. It was ok enough, but not good enough (false positives). A friend of mine loved it though ;p

Next up: Lavasoft Ad-Aware.

I DO NOT LIKE LAVASOFT!

So we'll see in the re-edit how it went ; )

Peace!

RE-EDIT:

Well... I must say, I did not have many problems on my x86 Vista laptop. Running it for over 2 weeks, I did not see many problems.
Still, it consumes a lot of memory (stats: process 1 approx. 100MB workset, peak about 160 & for process 2, the tray icon, it's about 30MB.

Still, boot times were fast. I do not complain. Also, no CPU hogging noticed.

Why removing? Although I did not encounter false positives AND I USE CHROME, I do not know how close Ad-Aware comes to 100% protection. Still, I could live with all this.

BUT I also have noticed many instances (about 15 a 20% of the time?) Vista Security Center complaining that the antivirus and antispyware programs were turned off. This is NOT the known timing-bug - only a reboot convinces Vista on those occasions that all is well. Ad-Aware itself reports all ok!

I'm going to test a new program - I'll let you know in a reply. If I go back to AA, I'll let you know in a re-edit here.

RE-RE-EDIT:
I cloned one of my Vista's to a virtual VMWare box. In VMWare, suddenly I have lot's of CPU cycling problems with Ad-Aware. I guess it does not understands its surroundings? :s So removed from Virtual Box too ;p

Again: PEACE!

In my experience, Avast works well with regular users (I usually install Avast in my friends computers when they ask me for some AV, or when I do an OS reinstallation...)
But for me, I've used McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for years and I'll keep using it, It's just comfortable for me because I can configure almost every aspect and make it act automatically so I'm not even bothered when it finds something, also has a very good detection rate. The only con is the resource consumption, as the DAT file grows, so does the memory footprint and ths happens no matter what McAfee has tried to do with patches to VSE and to the engine itself, but my computer can handle it so I don't worry that much :p

Tried digital-defender antivirus.

Looks promising, no CPU hogging. RAM is high; about 150MB -> 200MB.

Well. I am not much of a computer guy. I browse a lot. With regard to Quick Heal Antivirus. Iam using Quick Heal Internet Security. I will not be able to give a good review about software as I do not know much about the technical aspects. But as per me, Its a good antivirus. It does not use much of system resources. Fast scan and detections are also good. Made in my own country. good costumer support. user friendly interference and easy for a novice like me. silent firewall. cost is also not much. If you go for 3 users it cost around 900 rupees. i.e 300 per head.
I had requested for a review because I did not find one in the net expect the product's web page and wanted to know what other users of the software think/ professional opinion.

The next list of anti-virus softwares shows you all-round the most trustworthy security suites. Why? For they even work on unknown platforms. Unknown, like not ancient compared to Windows systems.

Also note, AVG sucks. Again.

" Packages that detected more than 90 per cent of the Android malware thrown at them included Droid security software from Avast, Dr Web, F-Secure, Ikarus, Kaspersky, Zoner and Lookout. "

Two of those programs I did not know and are available for Windows too.

Lookout AV is Android-only.

Again, Avast scores among the very best. Oh why did you forsake me and Chrome, oh Avast! :(

According to these data, installation size is 280,9 MB: http://www.antivirusware.com/testing/performance/ (http://www.antivirusware.com/testing/performance/)

However, I also notice that Norton make huge improvement in better (low) memory consumption in comparison with older versions: http://download.cnet.com/Norton-Internet-Security-2012/3000-18510_4-10592551.html (http://download.cnet.com/Norton-Internet-Security-2012/3000-18510_4-10592551.html)

Hi Samker,

Thanks for your response. Regarding NIS 2012 in my PC, its really 81.39 MB. I checked it with my Revo Uninstaller Pro. Why is this?

Probably, "Revo" (only) shows size of installation files in "Program Files" folder, but Norton have more files... for example in folders like: "Common Files", "Application Data" etc.

Here is also confirmation about size, Norton Internet Security - official page: http://us.norton.com/internet-security/ (http://us.norton.com/internet-security/)

Check under "System Requirements":

Quote
Minimum Hardware Requirements

- 300 MHz for Microsoft Windows XP, 1 GHz for Microsoft Windows Vista/Microsoft Windows 7

- 256 MB of RAM

- 300 MB of available hard disk space

- CD-ROM or DVD drive (if not installing via electronic download)

Forget everything I said about Avast not being good anymore.

For the last two and a half weeks I've been using Avast 7, which was released in February (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=93866.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=93866.0)).

And I can tell you... I had ZERO problems. ALL IS sweet and nice in Paradise again ; )

I'm currently using Norton 360 v6 now and it's really very impressive. It's very light on system resources. I just upgraded my Norton Internet Security to Norton 360 v6. Rework on the Norton products are really good having low footprint on the system. I don't know why a lot dont like Norton products but I just love the products.

Got a mildly infected Vista x86 system today.

It had AnVir installed. At startup, an error would follow that local temp file csrss.exe that couldn't be found.

First round of cleanup? Steven Gould's Cleanup - gives for faster scantimes :)

Then actual antivirus cleanup: Combofix fist. Found some nasty toolbars and the like.

I now installed Avast 7, Hitman Pro & Superantispwyare.

I let them all do a quick scan, to see if there would be any differences.

These are the results...

- Hitman Pro scan? 300MB RAM (360 max)
It says (!) IE uses a local proxy on port 50566. I could not find evidence of this, but I won't dispute it either.
Found possible malware in crack file for game.
Found temp file in ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Temp considered to be Infected. Maybe from other antivirus apps? If not, it was missed by Combofix.
Also found (traces of) Adware.MyWebSearch.

- Superantisypware scan? 95MB RAM (135 max)
Same results, except proxy (maybe fixed while still scanning due to me pressing Repair). Adware.MyWebSearch is called Adware.MyWebSearch/funweb/products.

- Avast scan? Nothing... :|

Peace!

I remember a time when I could vote in this kind of poll. I can't vote now cause there is no selection for 'NONE'.

Nothing initiates on our systems without admin knowledge and approval. So we don't rely on bloated reactive signature scanners anymore.

That's not necessarily a recommendation.  It's more of a statement on current affairs. :)

I stumbled upon another comparison article...

Copy Paste:
"Final Verdict

While there are some noteworthy aspects - such as Microsoft Security Essential's low false positive count or avast!'s lowest computer impact or Avira's best detection and removal performance - there is no one "winner" between Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira Free, avast! Free, and AVG Free. To try to determine which one is the "best" is like trying to split hairs; it is hard to do and it hurts. In real-life situations, all four programs will provide users with excellent protection.

However, with that being said, if I were to rank these four I would rank Avira and avast! as my top two picks; Avira for its detection and malware removal and avast! for its features and lowest computer impact. Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG come after Avira and avast!, with each providing one or two unique features that have potential to win over users."

More? Hi A.

Yes, I tested this AV few times during a past years and it look quite good but I'm not impressed... however, as you see, since 2007. it doesn't have even single Vote in our Poll. ::)

As I know, Trend Micro is one of the largest security companies in the world, ranking in the top 3 in web, messaging, and endpoint security... but mostly in corporate business. As example, here you have report from "Canalys": http://www.trendmicro.com/cloud-content/us/pdfs/business/reports/top_content_security_market_trends_in_small_business_canalys.pdf

On the other side, in the segment of "Home" protection, it's a really small player (OPSWAT's report): https://www.opswat.com/resources/reports/antivirus-and-compromised-device-january-2015

For the end, here you have Trend Micro's official Topic on SCforum: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,1127.0.html

I hope this information will be helpful... ;)

S.

I'm finding Emsisoft to be really good.
I used to use Microsoft Security Essentials but I had a strange infection that was only being partially cleaned by it, so I gave Emsisoft a go and it zapped it all :)
It isn't free but its worth the price to me. The firewall in the internet security version is excellent too.
Also they track you a lot less than others which is nice http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/antivirus-tracking-youd-surprised-sends/ (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/antivirus-tracking-youd-surprised-sends/)

Malwarebytes works amazing live well at detecting and deleting viruses, malwares and trojans. It takes a little more time to scan but the scan is a little more thorough. Installing updates is a must for this software too
You can use malwarebytes for Windows 10 too but Windows Defender works fine.

I use McAfee's Endpoit Security 10.7.. It's absolutely best..

I don't even know a better option. It may a bit of a load on the machine, but it doesn't hurt if you have a powerful processor like the intel i9.
