My computer runs 32bit Windows XP Professional SP3 with latest updates.
No additional software is installed except; 7-zip, Sandboxie, Avira AV, Office '03 and VMWare Workstation.
The external hard drive is Lacie (inside Samsung 160GB) interface is USB2.0.

Take a look here for some Update, FirmWare..-: http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/index.htm?id=10007

possible it is a problem with your registry. all device' PID & VID are recorded in the registry on its first detection, so that the next time you plugged the same device again it wont go to the long process of reinstalllation

That's what it should be doing instead of installing the damn driver everytime I connect :(.

Thank you for your help!

[EDIT]: do I need to enabled a service to do this? but all other USB devices works fine (no installation of driver, once installed)

Hi,

Recently, Windows started to installing drivers for my external usb hard drive, the mass storage device driver, etc;
Even though I've connected to the computer for two years, on same USB port, it installs the driver whenever I reconnect the
USB cable. I've formatted more than 50 times with FAT32, NTFS and even ext3 but no luck.

Why does Windows keep installing the driver whenever I reconnect?

Thank you for your help.
