My dear friend
I have found the problem.  Norton was configured to block registry changes WITHOUT notification.  I have now set it to tell me everytime a change is asked for.  Problem solved.  I have rescanned with HJT and it was able to successfully remove the items in question.
Samir I cannot thank your enough for all the help you have given me over the last year.  You are a marvel.  Once I have the funds I will donate to your cause.

As always your friend in America
  Robert Mansfield

P.S.  I hope your wife and daughter are well and life is good to you all.  God Bless!

Robert, I always love to make double check with latest versions (but with not to many programs).

My personal opinion is that you use to many security programs right now: Spybot - Search & Destroy, SUPERAntiSpyware, PC Tools AntiVirus, Norton 360, AVG, Ad-Aware & Spyware Terminator. Probably because of all this you lose a lot of PC resources and have some problems with "false positive" detections. Take my advice and get rid some of them. One AntiVirus and one AntiSpyware with "real" monitoring is enough.

But let we go to main problem - HJT entries. You have problem with "file missing" because most of them are "O23 - Services":

Quote

O23 Services are programs that are loaded automatically by Windows on startup. These services are loaded regardless of whether or not a user logs on to the the computer and tend to be used to handle system wide tasks such as Windows operating system features, antivirus software, or application servers. Lately there has been an increased trend for malware to use services to infect a computer. It is therefore important to examine each of the services listed for ones that do not look correct.

When you fix a O23 entry Hijackthis will change the startup for this service to disabled, stop the service, and then ask the user to reboot. It will not delete the actual service from the registry or the file it points to. In order to delete the service you will need to know the service name. This name is the text between the parenthesis. If the display name is the same as the service name, then it will not list the service name.

I think that you now understand what is a problem. Now we will try with this:

1. Go to Control Panel -> Add-Remove Programs and uninstall all program which you doesn't need anymore
2. You can also use HijackThis to delete these services. You can click on Config, then Misc Tools, and then press the Delete an NT service.. button. When it opens you should then enter the service name and press OK.

Be careful when removing items listed in O23 as some of them are legitimate!

cya later my friend.

samker, my friend
You must have noticed that I have spybot. I am only contacting you AFTER all scans.  As for super anti-spy...it is a waste of time.   I have, as you know, several weapons in my arsenal. Super Anti-spy has yet to find anything.  I am glad I did not pay for it.  To date my best "PAID FOR" is Norton, AVG, and Adaware Plus. Also I cannot say enough good things about spybot.  It is so wonderful that I donate to the cause. Additionally I use spywareblaster as a sheild.  As for Kaspersky...you must have forgotten that they are not compatible with Norton or AVG.
My friend my system IS clean.  I just do not understand why HJT will not remove the items I select.

As allways your friend in America
Robert

Hi Robert my friend.

I saw your problem, let's we first try with this:

1. Update & Run Full Scan Spybot Search & Destroy: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,1688.0.html

2. Download, Update & Run Full Scan SUPERAntiSpyware: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,1647.0.html

3. Make Online Scan with Kaspersky and provide us log: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,734.0.html

4. Now run HJT and provide us log.

cya,

S.

P.S.

Hope finally this game will win.  :)

Hello Samker
I need your help again.  I was cleaning my computer and ran a HJT scan.  I found several missing file extensions and a file from  "crawler toolbar"(it must have sneeked in when I installed Spyware Terminator).  I checked the items I wanted removed and then did another scan and they are still there.  I am running HJT as administrator.  I do not understand why HJT cannot remove them.
If HJT cannot remove them is there another method I might employ?
I will supply a copy of my log file
 Thanks again my friend
  Robert
