Once you HAVE the virus, you can no longer download updates from Microsoft and most antivirus software vendors. One thing the virus does is block requests from you computer to these web sites. Following the steps from a site I found - edit - removed link until we check this site - downloading a free removal tool, disabling AutoPlay, and repairing the registry - you can remove this virus and protect from infection.  The cleaning tools can still be reached by IP address.

Hi there,

In desperate need of help.  I have Conficker / Kido.CJ on my NT 4.0 File Server and would really appreciate a Step By Step 'Dummy's' Guide (or link to same) to remove it manually.

As soon as I get rid of this damn thing I'll upgrade, but until then any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

That's main reason for this kind of infection.

The First Steps to Virus/Spyware/Adware Removal
Step 1: Delete Temporary Files

There are a number of files/folders/programs that you can make use of once and never need again in the future. They tend to accumulate on your system and consume much space on your drive, resulting to slow processing of tasks. To enhance your computer’s performance while doing a scanning process, I would strongly suggest you to sort and delete them. This will result to a faster and more effective virus scanning process.

Your computer can get infected simply by accessing a website. And information about visited websites is stored in your Temporary Internet Files folder to facilitate an upcoming access to these websites. However, these files can be infected and also tend to take a lot of space in the long run. Deleting these files would allow you to remove corrupted files from your system while allowing your computer to perform faster.

How to delete Temporary Files?

Click on your Start Button and select the “Accessories” option
Choose “System Tools” and from the list, choose “Disk Clean up”
Let the application run for a while
When the scanning process is over, always click on “View Files” to check whether these files found can be removed from your system
You can also check more options in the “Files to delete” list. Temporary Internet Files, Downloaded Program Files, Offline WebPages as well as the Recycle Bin can be checked.
Confirm the changes when prompted and click “OK”

How to delete Temporary Internet Files?
Click on your Start Button and open Control Panel
Select Internet Options
From the General task, under Temporary Internet Files, choose “Delete Cookies” and “Delete Files”.
Confirm the changes and click “Apply”.

Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.

Conficker, also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido, is a computer worm targeting the Microsoft Windows operating system that was first detected in November 2008.[1] The worm uses a combination of advanced malware techniques which has made it difficult to counter, and has since spread rapidly into what is now believed to be the largest computer worm infection.

The origin of the name Conficker is thought to be a portmanteau of the term "configure" with German word Ficker, which means "fucker."[3][4] On the other hand, Microsoft analyst Joshua Phillips described the name as a rearrangement of portions of the domain name trafficconverter.biz,[5] which was used by early versions to download updates.

Discovery:

The first variant of Conficker, discovered in early November 2008, propagated through the Internet by exploiting a vulnerability in a network service (MS08-067) on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta. While Windows 7 may have been affected by this vulnerability, the Windows 7 Beta was not publicly available until January 2009. Although Microsoft released an emergency out-of-band patch on October 23, 2008 to close the vulnerability, a large number of Windows PCs (estimated at 30%) remained unpatched as late as January 2009. A second variant of the worm, discovered in December 2008, added the ability to propagate over LANs through removable media and network shares. Researchers believe that these were decisive factors in allowing the worm to propagate quickly: by January 2009, the estimated number of infected computers ranged from almost 9 million to 15 million. Antivirus software vendor Panda Security reported that of the 2 million computers analyzed through ActiveScan, around 115,000 (6%) were infected with Conficker.

Recent estimates of the number of infected computers have been more notably difficult because of changes in the propagation and update strategy of recent variants of the worm.

TRY macafee antivirus for the detection of w32.downadup.b.

I have used this tool in the past and is a great freebie to run on any prolematic system,

Dont expect the world of this program cuz at the end of the day it's free and anything that's free is not always that comprehensive at scanning but this in combination with Malware bytes and trend micro and you can't go far wrong.

P.s: Anyone that has a system causing blue screens and your about to give up and rebuild your systems then STOP!!, Try poping in the HDD into another system as a slave.

Obiously you need to ensure your MASTER machine has full Anti virus and firewalls enabled which are all up to date, and that you lock of the possiblitly of anything writing to your MASTER systems main drive, McAfee's Access Protection comes to mind

This stops the nasty malware/virus from jumping from one HDD to another and is ususally the quickest clean up option for me rather than trying to rollback or re-install the OS or APPS.

Don't forget to regularly Update your Windows.  ;)

That's main reason for this kind of infection.

Conficker is caused by unpatch windows based systems.  Need to download Malicious Tool Remover from Microsoft and burn it onto a cd and run it on the infected machine.  Make sure the machine is not on the network if your in a work environment.  Run malicious tool and it will detect and remove conficker.  Once removed, be sure to run windows updates and install a good av solution.

For those using Windows OSs (including server versions) I would recommend Dr.Web CureIT! utility as a standalone scanning anti-virus / anti-rootkit utility or Dr.Web LiveDisk containing the same Dr.Web CureIt! utility and a couple of other useful tools for sysadmins in case if a Windows OS machine cannot boot.
These tools are totally free for non-profit / personal use and they come from an old Russian antivirus lab owned by Mr. Igor Danilov.
We all are more familiar with the Russian Kapsersky-brand due to a massive marketing effort set forth by brothers Kaspersky lab. ;) But Kaspersky lab appeared a bit later and after Mr. Danilov's lab. :) All additional info can be found here: https://free.drweb.com/download+cureit+free/?lng=en and here: https://free.drweb.com/aid_admin/?lng=en.
I hope this info will be useful to many people over here.
