Post by: jake2pointzero on 25. April 2009., 22:37:08
Hi Everybody,

Can you posts some reviews, comments(bad and good) or anything regarding McAfee Desktop Firewall 8.5.

Samker:

Is it ok to combine Mcafee Desktop Firewall 8.5 with McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i & Anti-Spyware?

Thanks

Hi Jake,

this is one Excellent FireWall with very simple configuration... and use them in mentioned combination with other McAfee Products.  ;)

Don't know what other SCF Members think about them, since this version is maybe outdated ( 2003. ?? ) ??

P.S.

I was remove download link since it's against SCF TOS... (as I know this program doesn't have free download version ??)

Samker, I've used MDF8.5 with VSE8.5, is there a way to 'combine' two separate icons of Desktop Firewall and VirusScan? Because I got two separate icons on my task bar, want to get rid of it.

Thanks.

Eric, I don't think to it's possible to integrate "everything" in to one icon...

Anyway, I'm thinking to change McAfee Desktop Firewall with McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention 7 because McAfee doesn't support anymore MDF (End of Support October 31, 2007.) and MDF has been integrated in Host IPS...: http://www.mcafee.com/us/enterprise/support/customer_service/end_life.html (http://www.mcafee.com/us/enterprise/support/customer_service/end_life.html)

so probably I'll very soon provide some new info. for SCF Community...  ;)

samker,

If McAfee end it support on MDF 8.5, does that means the MDF is not effective in blocking or protecting my Desktop Computer from malwares, hacker and etc?

What is Host IPS?

I don't think that Jake...

Firewall protection mostly depend on proper configuration.  ;)

Before few minutes I was publish Patch 4 ("old", but latest one) for Mcafee Desktop Firewall: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,2729.0.html (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,2729.0.html)

I'll send you Download Link via PM in the next few minutes.  ;)

What is Host IPS?

Host IPS is inheritor of MDF, and here is few info about McAFee HIPS:

Quote
McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention monitors and blocks unwanted activity and makes it easier to keep desktops safe with multiple proven methods—system firewall, signature analysis, and behavioral analysis. And you can manage it all from one centralised console. With automatic signature updates and zero-day protection, you get advanced vulnerability-shielding capabilities. Patching systems is something you will do less often and less urgently. You’ll also find it easier to comply with legal regulations. With a single agent for host intrusion prevention on your desktops, Host Intrusion Prevention is easy to deploy, easy to configure, and easy to manage.

Features

Vulnerability shielding
Automatic security content updates target specific vulnerabilities; it recognises unknown exploits and stops them from executing; security content updates do not require system reboots

Prevents buffer-overflow exploits
McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention uses a patented host intrusion technology to prevent buffer-overflow attacks, one of the most common methods of attacking desktops

Application Blocking
Control which specific applications can run—or must never run—on any given computer for an added layer of protection

Windows firewall protection

Apply different security parameters based on how your system connects to the network (wired or wireless) with a stateful firewall for Windows; quarantine noncompliant systems as they attempt to connect to the network and block system ports

Advanced application protection

McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention puts an “envelope" around an application to prevent it from communicating with other applications; this prevents applications from being leveraged in any type of attack

Connection Isolation
Block all traffic on all but selected networks; when users "forget" to turn off wireless interfaces after connecting to the corporate LAN, this feature will ensure that no unintended breaches occur

IPV6 Support
McAfee Host IPS firewall supports the "next generation" IP protocol that is an integral component of Windows Vista

Benefits

Aggressive, comprehensive protection for your desktops

Prevent intrusions, protect assets, and safeguard desktops and laptops with three layers of protection—behavioral rules, signatures analysis, and firewall protection; protect your desktop systems against unknown (zero-day) attacks; it’s easy to manage all your desktops, regardless of location, from a single centralised console.

Protect enterprise desktops worldwide
McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention is centrally managed and scalable, so that you can deploy it across your entire enterprise for complete global protection with multiple language support
Stay ahead of threats with prioritised patch management
Use the power of McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention against new vulnerabilities and exploits when they hit for more time to research, test, and deploy patches

Lower your costs and simplify management

Reduce the frequency and urgency of patching systems; with its centralised streamlined management, you will also lower system maintenance costs

Control installation of unauthorised applications
Prevent unauthorised applications (such as games) that may increase security risk or reduce employee productivity from being installed on a system

I can say the MDF requires least configuration and easy to control. I would like to recommend this to someone else.

P.S. I didnt know it was discontinued.. shame :( it was a great firewall. I might try that Host IPS soon though.

It's a very good firewall. But it is very old and doesn't run on Vista and Win7 (I tried it on Vista x64). There is also no support from McAfee aynmore. But if you use Win 2000 (i think it works on 2000) or XP it's a good decision.
Under Win 7 x64 I'm using Outpost Firewall 6.7 now.
