You won't win a prize, but just for the sake of the challenge... Can you tell by looking at the image included in this article which of the two Windows Vista media is genuine and which one is pirated? No, go ahead, give it an ample try, at least. And next time you buy a Windows Vista operating system just because of a deal too good to be true, take it with a grain of salt. Even if indeed it writes "genuine" on it. But if you can't tell which one is which, you needn't be upset. Other 1,000 people were also unable to tell the difference. But the
Windows Genuine Advantage  wasn't tricked that easily.

The two examples in the image featured on the left are a comparison between a genuine Windows Vista Business DVD and a counterfeit copy seized by the FBI and the Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS) in the largest investigation in the world targeting a software counterfeiting syndicate. The operation, codenamed "Summer Solstice," took a couple years to complete in order to bring down a ring involved in shipping in excess of $2 billion dollars worth of pirated software materials in 27 markets around the world.

"The sting, carried out over the last couple of weeks by the PSB and FBI seized over five hundred million dollars worth of counterfeit products like the one pictured below. Beyond the sheer size of the bust the most exciting aspect of this for us on the WGA team is knowing that WGA actually played a role. More than 1,000 customers in 12 different countries who had counterfeits from this particular source used WGA to learn their software was counterfeit, submitted the counterfeits to Microsoft, and forensic and intelligence specialists then traced the counterfeits back to the criminal syndicate in China. So Windows customers, using WGA, have actually helped to bring the biggest software counterfeiting operation in history to justice," revealed Alex Kochis, Senior Product Manager for Windows Genuine Advantage.

"The growing crime involving the theft of copyrighted material does not end at U.S. borders but affects the global economy. The buying and selling of counterfeit goods amounts to stealing the ideas of others and is no different than common theft, where the consequences of getting caught include going to jail and other serious penalties," commented J. Stephen Tidwell, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI in Los Angeles.

The Chinese authorities arrested 25 suspects while the FBI conducted 24 searches and asset seizure warrants in the U.S. Both governmental agencies confiscated approximately $10 million worth of pirated software and the additional assets used to produce it. And of course, the disk on the left in the image is the genuine Microsoft product.
