Title: Ran a Spy Sweep and found viruses. Please help get rid of!
Post by: abby4567 on 22. December 2007., 03:28:27
Hey everyone! This site looks really helpful, hopefully someone can help me. I ran a Spysweeper search on my computer and found these:
Viruses
Exp/QTP-A
JS/Dload-H
Troj/JSXOr-Gen

Behavorials
Mal/ObfJS-H
Mal/ObfJS-V

The only signs of these so far are internet explorer randomely needing to close (especially when I'm on eBay whcih is bad because I run an eBay business) and I've been getting a lot of popups. Also my front USB ports stopped being able to read things, but that could be a coincidence.

These are just the ones on my user account, there are more on the other two. I noticed most other people give a lot more info than this, but I wasn't sure what you'd need, so if anybody can help me I'm willing to tell you anything else you need, of course. Whatever you could tell me would be a great help and thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for your response and help. Right now, I am running/downloading Kaspersky and Hijack This. Here's some more detailed info on the problems:

My User Account has the viruses/behavorials listed in my above post, but there aren't really any immediate effects except for the USB port problems and internet explorer randomely giving me the "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and need to close..." and then the error report popup. Also, I can't remember if it's mine or my mother's account, but I get a debug error popup and I always press "No" to the debug because it tends to freeze the computer.

My Mom's User Account has these viruses:
EXP/QTP-A
Troj/Decdec-A

Behavorial
Mal/ObfJS-H

My Dad's also has two, but his account is password protected and he's not home at the moment, so I can't view his spysweeper, but if it's important I can post them later. I know that on his account, he can't get on eBay without getting the error and internet explorer closing.

That's about all that I know at the moment. After the scans are done, I'll post the reports or logs. Thank you so much for your help and tell me if there's anything else you need to know!

Hi again Abby,

it's look like we will have a lot of job here.  :police:

During this cleaning process we will try to clean your complete PC (all three accounts) and will do that in few steps.  ;)

Now please provide us also your HijackThis log (this is most important) and please repeat Kaspersky scan, we need complete scan log since this partial doesn't show any infection (it's normal to some files are locked).

cya later,

Samker

Hi Samker!

I ran Kaspersky scans for Email and all folders on the C Drive, too, but found no Malware on any of them. I saved them, so if they'll be helpful, I can post them but they just show the blocked items. Which Kaspersky scan should I repeat? All of them or just the Critical? Thanks again!

Ok Abby,

it's look like you don't have any AntiVirus installed at your PC, that is extremely dangerous!  :-\

Please follow next instructions:

1. Turn of System Restore
Quote
Steps to turn off System Restore
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.
3. Click to select the Turn off System Restore check box. Or, click to select the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
4. Click OK.
5. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm that you want to turn off System Restore:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer.

Do you want to turn off System Restore?
After a few moments, the System Properties dialog box closes.

2. Download & Install AVG Anti-Virus (FREE version): http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,108.0.html

3. Download & Install Spybot Search & Destroy AntiSpyWare: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,1138.0.html

3. Update the virus definitions (for both)

4. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected (for both).

5. After that, please run another Online AV Scan, this time we choose McAfee ( http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,734.0.html ) and provide us information did he after all find some infections?

6. Provide us new HJT log

Regards,

Samker

Before I do the things you posted, I was just wondering- I have Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware. Isn't that an anti-virus? Or no? If not I'll be more than happy to follow your instructions. I just wanted to clarify. Thanks again for your continued help!

Webroot is one solid AntiSpyware provider but in my experience they don't provide god quality AntiVirus tools.

So please uninstall them complete and continue with my earlier instructions.

I just downloaded the AVG scan, disabled my other virus protection, and then ran the scan. It came back saying that our computer was free of viruses. I would post the results, but it wouldn't let me copy/paste them. I'm off to do the Spybot and HJT log!

Don't worry, it's important that you are free of viruses ...  ;)

Ok, two more note: first run Spybot, second before you run HJT please turn off all possible programs and after that provide us log.

I'll wait your reply.

Now, I just ran the Spybot, it found 5 things, and i 'fixed' them. Here's the new HJT log: Whoops! I ran the scan before I got your post, so I had some programs open. I'll run it again and post those results!

Is it possible that somewhere in this process, the viruses were destroyed? Since this morning I've pretty much stopped getting the popups and haven't got any internet explorer or debug errors. Thanks again for your continued help!

Hi Samker!

I ran the HJT again and deleted the things that you said to. Then I moved on to my mom's user account. I ran all the different Kapserky scans (memory, critcal areas, folders, etc) and they all came back saying we were free of spyware. I saved them all and can post them if they would be helpful. Here's part of one, as an example:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\DEFAULT  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\default.LOG  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM.LOG  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SecEvent.Evt  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SECURITY  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SECURITY.LOG  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SOFTWARE  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system.LOG  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\h323log.txt  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS\INDEX.BTR  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS\INDEX.MAP  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS\MAPPING.VER  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS\MAPPING1.MAP  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS\MAPPING2.MAP  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS\OBJECTS.DATA  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS\OBJECTS.MAP  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Perflib_Perfdata_754.dat  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\wiadebug.log  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\wiaservc.log  Object is locked  skipped

C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log  Object is locked  skipped

Scan process completed.

I'll go run the HJT log now! However, while being on my mom's account i still get the 'Debug' error, i've noticed.

Ok Abby, now check & fix this items (mom's account) with HJT:

Quote
O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\Joe\LOCALS~1\Temp\2007423171132_mcinfo.exe /insfin

Next steps are:

1. (mom's account) run full scan AVG & Spybot (before that uninstall Spy Sweep)
2. (dad's acc.) provide us HJT & Kaspersky log

Regards,

S.

I just ran the AVG scan and it didn't find any problems. My dad told me not to uninstall Spysweeper, just to turn it off because he had to pay for it or something like that, but I think I still have the disc, so if it's really that important, I can probably uninstall it. The Spybot found 32 'problems' and I 'fixed' them. Now I'm off to work on my dad's account! Thanks again!

That's Ok if you want to use SpySweep later but if your SpySweep have antivirus protection (you must to be sure about this) you will need to uninstall AVG later. One PC can have 2 or 3 AntiSpyware tools but only one AntiVirus Protection that's a rule. For your information we will soon open here (2-3 days) Software Shop where you can have possibility to buy excellent AntiVirus with great discounts. ;)

Ok, I will wait your next log's.

I also ran the AVG scan and it didn't find anything. I'm off to run the Spybot one now! I'll post the results.

I also found 32 items on his Spybot search and 'fixed them.' Thanks again!

Ok Abby, please fix this items (dad's account):

Next step is to download CCleaner: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,1133.0.html

Run all possible tools inside of CCleaner (clean separately all three accounts), but be cerafuly with this:

- Inside of Cleaner/Windows check all (except Desktop Shortcuts).

After all, "try" your PC, did he work better, do you any other problem ... etc ???

Provide me information what we need to fix "better", if you find some problems provide me new HJT log only for that account/s !

Regards,

S.

Hi! I'll fix those items and dowload/run CCleaner (for every user), but we'll be away from this computer until the 1st of the year, so I won't be able to 'try it out' until then really, but when I can I'll let you know how everythings working. Thanks again for all your help!

Hi again, Samker!

I recently ran the CCleaner and "tested" the computer. Unfortunately, my moms account has more pop-ups and de-bug errors than before (but the errors only come from certain websites, I've noticed). My account is running more slowly than usual. I ran Spybot sweeps on both my moms account (I've ran hers everyday for the past few days and have found 5-10 items to 'fix' each time) and mine (which I found a few once). I re-enabled Spysweeper and ran searches and found the same viruses as before and cleared them again, which didn't do anything. The computer worked better while we were attempting to fix it, but seems to have gone back to what we started with. Should I start the same process over again? Thanks again for all your help!

Hi again Abby,

first I want to wish Happy New Year to you and your family.

After that we need to go back to work.  ;)

This is very strange behavior, as I said at start:

it's look like we will have a lot of job here.

Please give me again these two logs as soon as possible:

1. BitDefender Online Scan http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,734.0.html

2. HijackThis

Don't worry Abby, we will do our best to resolve this.

Samker

Sorry, it took so long (gotta hate finals!). I'm assuming you want me to run these on the other two accounts? Thanks again!

Not now, we will do that later.

Now please folow these steps:

1. Check did you already close System Restore?

2. Uninstall AVG & SpySweep (we really need this). It's a really bad idea to run two AntiViruse at same time, because of that your PC is slower than earlier.

3. Download, Install, Update and run Full Scan with Kaspersky AntiVirus: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,16.0.html

4. Download, Install, Update and run Full Scan with Ad-Aware: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,1212.0.html

5. Disable script debugging:
Quote
  • Open IE
    Click Tools
    Select Internet Options
    Click the Advanced tab
Select the Disable Script Debugging checkboxes

6. Update your Internet Explorer to latest version 7: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

7. After all, provide me again new HJT log and information how yours PC now work?

Regards,

Samker

Hi again! And I also wanted to wish you a Happy New Year!  ;)

I already had system restore turned off. Then I uninstalled AVG and SpySweeper. The Kapersky scans came back fine and I turned off the script debugging, while I'm downloading AdAware now. I will run it and provide you with the log after its been installed and ran. Just one thing, do I need to download internet explorer 7? Isn't that the one with the tabs at the top? I've used it before and didn't really like it, but it it's neccessary, I will update it.

Also- should I uninstall some of the other virus things like Kapersky, CCleaner, HJT, or Spybot? And everytime I turn on my computer Spybot wants permisson to change things, I don't know if thats important.

One last thing- should I be extra carefull where I go on the internet until I get some anti-virus reinstalled?

I'll post back with the HJT and report on how the computers running soon. Thanks yet again!

Hi again! And I also wanted to wish you a Happy New Year!

Thank you Abby.

Just one thing, do I need to download internet explorer 7? Isn't that the one with the tabs at the top? I've used it before and didn't really like it, but it it's neccessary, I will update it.

Yes, that is IE7. Much safer & faster than your version.

Quote
One last thing- should I be extra carefull where I go on the internet until I get some anti-virus reinstalled?

Don't worry Kaspersky is a AntiVirus, much much better than SpySweep & AVG together.  ;)
Anyway for your information: Spybot is a AntiSpyware protection (you can turn it of AutoProtection - Tea Timer if you want) and CCleaner & HJT are just cleaning tools.

Now please run HJT and fix this items:

I misunderstood your earlier post. I thought that you just wanted me to run a Kapersky scan, not download the anti-virus. So I did and got all the updates and everything for that earlier. Should I have downloaded the trial, or should I actually buy it? Does it work better that way? The computer definately seems to be running faster! The only problem I still have is this popping up sometimes:

I normally have to push the 'No' button half a dozen times for it to go away, while the number after 'Line' changes. Sometimes it freezes the computer. But it normally happens on certain websites and once it happens it normally happens several more times. The other popups seem to have gone away.

I still have to download internet explorer 7, but other than that I did everything. I fixed the HJT items. I'll have to downolad IE7 tomorrow. Thanks again!

For now just download Trial version and follow my earlier instruction.

That's good.

For now just download & install IE7, after that finish this "job" with Kaspersky and provide me information did you still (with IE7) have this pop-up messages? I also need that information for other two accounts (mom's & dad's)? Don't forget to run (updated) full scan Kaspersky with their accounts also!

That's all for now.

cya Abby,

Samker

P.S.

One note, which I forget to advice you earlier. We will this issues with IE I'm almost sure 100% but it's good idea to in the future for surfing use Firefox it's much more faster and safer than any version of IE. If you want to try Firefox up-right is direct download link ("Orange button "Browse the web faster. Get Firefox with Google Toolbar"), use them.

I had already downloaded the trial version, got the updates (there were a lot!) and ran the scan. It found over 200 things, but they were all things like cookies and nothing critical, so I just removed them.

I just downloaded IE7 last night and love it! The two other computers I tried it on I didn't like it for some reason. It seemed to slow them down. But it makes this one a lot faster. And I still get the runtime error popups. I've notived a lot have been 'Line: 33.' Since the downolad they seemed to have changed. I'll keep in mind Firefox. Should I try that now?

Also- a little unrelated. I tried to update my iPod yesterday (after downloading IE7) and it didn't work out. Everytime I would connect it the whole computer would freeze. First iTunes would, then the rest of the computer became incredibly slow and unresponsive. I thought it might have been the iPod, and and I have a few different ones, so I tried another one, the same things happened, and after about 20 tries I finally got the original to work. I don't know if thats important.

And should I run the scans on the other two accounts now? Or wait until that runtime error is fixed?

Thanks again!

I'll think about this problem. For now try to reinstall/repair iPod (connection) software.

It's Ok to scan all accounts now.  ;)

Also please follow this instructions:

Open IE, after that open IE Tools and Internet Options, open Advanced tab, find Browsing part and find and check (mark both to disable) these two things "Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)" and "Disable script debugging (Other)".

After all provide me new information about problems!

Regards,

Samker

Okay- I downloaded Mozilla Firefox, but haven't had the chance to use it much. However, when I have used it I haven't got any runtime error pop-ups. I kept Internet Explorer, too. Is it okay to have both?

I think the iPod thing resolved itself. I've updated it a few times since then and only had one major issue. It could have just been a glitch.

The Kapersky scan came back clean on my moms account (just come cookies) and here's the HJT log, if you need that. Her account tends to get the most runtime pop-ups.

Also, I did the internet options thing.  And later I will be able to run the scan and get the HJT log on my Dad's account and post the results.

Overall, the computers actually running very well! I little slower than normal- but still pretty fast. Since I uninstalled all the anti-virus stuff.

Thanks again and I'll keep you updated!

Okay- I downloaded Mozilla Firefox, but haven't had the chance to use it much. However, when I have used it I haven't got any runtime error pop-ups. I kept Internet Explorer, too. Is it okay to have both?

Yes, it is Ok.  ;)

I think the iPod thing resolved itself. I've updated it a few times since then and only had one major issue. It could have just been a glitch.

Ok.

The Kapersky scan came back clean on my moms account (just come cookies) and here's the HJT log, if you need that. Her account tends to get the most runtime pop-ups.

I'll check this one more time, later (together) with your dad's log.

Can you please provide me screenshot?

And, yes, I do still have Kapersky AV. I just meant it was running a lot faster since I got rid of AVG and Spysweeper.

The only main problem I encounter now is the debugging error pop-ups. A new little annoyance that developed a day ago was SpyBot trying to block just about every website I go on saying that it detected TagASaurus and I should deny the URL. Once I hit 'Deny' it still lets me on, but it did get pretty annoying after a while.

Turn Off (disable) Tea Timer inside of Spybot Search & Destroy

I'll check your dad's log and again think about this last problem.  :)

Until that use Firefox for surfing, hope we will finish this repair soon.  ;)

Abby,

let we try these solutions:

1. Open your Control Panel

2. Open Ad Remove Programs

3. Uninstall Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer

4. Uninstall Java (J2SE Runtime ...) (maybe you have few of them, uninstall all)

5. Download and install latest version of Java: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Test Your PC and provide me results!

Hi again!

After I finally figured out how to disable Teatime in Spybot, I realized that it was already disabled. And I still get those pop-ups. I went to check my Yahoo email and everytime I loaded a new page, I got the error. So I don't know why I'm getting them. I can provide a screenshot, if you would like.

I opened Add/Remove programs and uninstalled Java, then reinstalled it from the link you gave me. I went to uninstall Google toolbar, but it wasn't there. It must have already been uninstalled for some reason.

To sum it up, the only two main problems I'm encountering is the runtime errors (mainly on my mom's account) and the Spybot errors (As far as I know, mostly on my account. Maybe a few on my mom's). My Dad doesn't use this computer much, so I don't have much to report about his account.

Thanks again for all your continued help!

Hi!

I uninstalled Spybot a day or so ago and all the Spybot-related errors have been fixed. Should I reinstall it? It did find and get rid of a lot of things at one point, so I figured it must have been important.

I also installed Google toolbar and then uninstalled it.

I don't know why, but the debugging errors have seem to gone away. I'll keep checking to see if they come back and get back to you on that one.   ;D

Thanks again,

Abby

Hi Abby,

it's look like we resolve this!?

Spybot is good tool, but probably there is a some "bug" (inside of this version) anyway you have Ad-Aware which is also excellent.

Probably this toolbar make all this trouble but we will see that later. Provide us information after some period.

And for the end one important information: Now you have installed Kaspersky AntiVirus Protection but Trial version (only 30-day), after that period they will stop to make automatic update. That's a big problem, because after some period they will stop to protect you.

I'll suggest you to buy full version, maybe Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 which we provide from our main page. In the addition if you buy Kaspersky via SCforum you will also get one special gift and that is one time FREE Remote Assist Help: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,1242.0.html

That's all for now Abby, regards to You and your Family.

Samker,

Thank you again so much for all your help!

It appears that the computer is finally fixed. There are a few small things I've noticed, but nothing major. It's running just as well as ever!

I will most likely be buying Kapersky before the trial ends, I just need to figure out when that is, and I'll be sure to do it through your site.

I'll always remember this forum if I have computer errors again and I'll give you an update in a little while to let you know how things are going. Thanks again!!!

Best Wishes,
Abby
