PlayStation 3 finally hacked (PSJailbreak)
« on: 20. August 2010., 09:48:16 »

An Australian seller of videogame modchips claims Sony's PlayStation 3 console has been jailbroken by a hack that allows users to run backup and home-brewed copies of games — not to mention titles that have been pirated.

OzModChips.com posted three videos on YouTube that purport to show a fully current version of the console that is broken using a simple USB dongle. In the video below, the narrator puts a disc copy of God of War III into the PS3's drive and then activates the console's backup manager. He then appears to scroll through a list of games before selecting and running the title Infamous. The videos have been greeted by claims the hack is an elaborate hoax, so the video shows both the TV and the console in full view throughout the demo.

“If you still don't believe it after this maybe you should ... lock yourself under a bridge or something,” the narrator, speaking with an Aussie accent says. “I know there's been a lot of fake videos on the internet about PS modchips, but this is the most proof you're ever going to get, and if you still don't believe it, then just don't buy it.”

Erroneous claims of full-blown PS3 jailbreaks have been like the Halley's Comet of the hacking world, regularly surfacing only to disappoint the masses of fans who want to assert more control over their devices.

A site called PSJailbreak says the jailbreak takes just seconds to run and works with PS3 consoles sold throughout the world: http://psjailbreak.com/
It supports all games, but doesn't allow past console games, Blu-ray or DVD movies to be backed up, added the site, which at time of writing was extremely slow to load.

Sony has yet to respond to the claims, so it's still too early to say this hack is for real. If it is, we imagine there are plenty of game makers having conniptions right about now.
