hi cplcody,

how old is your hdd????whats the company name ????m asking the hdd company not dell and yes dude anyhow if you wish to recover your pics dont accept the new hard drive as they will take the old one away on which you can still recover your data

Just call dell to make sure your old drive is not corrupted simply talk to their hardware department, they will run few tests to make sure your old drive is not corrupt if its corrupt then only exchange with new one else no use

...
I am looking for a new security suite today.

What do you think about Bitdefender

We have partnership with them... really positive experience and feedback from SCF members related to security protection etc.

https://store.bitdefender.com/order/cart.php?PRODS=2627838&QTY=1&AFFILIATE=19261

This one is my suggestion, it cost only $40/year.

Should I install a new hard drive that is being sent to me from the manufacturer? :-\

Don't know, that's up to you... I'm 99% sure that your current HDD doesn't cause this problem.

On thr issue of backup, should I buy an internal or external hard drive?

My recommendation is external drive.

one more thing, Dell is sending new HD, should I accept it?

I'm not sure what's your question?

Thank u for the help. I sucessfully formatted hd and reinstalled xp but lost many photos  :(

You welcome my friend.

So sorry for your photos  :( , simply you start formation little bit earlier... so we lose any chances to recover your PC after McAfee problem.

Another important thing-suggestion for your future work is backup...

I forgot to mention that my son left a Beatle's CD in the rom drive. When Mcafee started to scan that could that have caused all this?  I have a lot of pics that Id would like to save. Possible?

I don't think that there is some possibility to save anything since you already start formatting... and your PC still doesn't boot??

Lets we try to release CD Rom...

Turn the pc off. Use a paper clip that you've straightened out and insert it into the tiny little hole on the drive to manually open the drawer.

After that, try new installation (or maybe first try to repair XP) with XP installation CD.

I have old dell dimension tht shared files with the comp thru network. must be honest,
I am not comp tech savy at all, barely set up a network.

Yes I understand... did you maybe have original installation CD for XP??

If you do, simply follow these instruction for format and XP installation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348

Hope this will help you??
