concerning news groups...

Yeah, news-groups always have been (and will be, I pray) the backbone of the internet (and the internet warez community ;)).

Sadly, free initiatives (with binary support) have been rare. In the 90s I remember core^dump@mailandnews.com.... They went into a coma over a decade ago :| I sooooo miss the "^" in my @ddress (and will be doing so till the day I will go coma :>)

Anyways, last year or so finally a free newsgroup provider popped up once more - and they are still living on today!

Check them out here:

Lifetime 1Mbit Usenet
• 900 days retention    • No logfiles!
• 9000TB Storage   • No personal details

Free vs Premium
Speed - 1Mbit   100Mbit
Data - 25GB   Unlimited
Connections   2   20
Max Hosts   1   4
SSL no    yes
Retention   10 days   900 days
As low as   Free           €2.99

The retention time is a downer - I'll admit that. BUT it is FREE :P

Only thing I need now is a good newsgroup client - something I always fail in finding :(

TIPS! Pretty pleace and...

Karma!

Time for an update? ; )

I remember checking out p2p anonymity a few years back. Peerguardian seemed to be the only viable option. But I abandoned it again for Vista required explicit permission to automatically start. Sigh, Vista... Anyways, on W8 nowadays, x64 even, thought I'd try it out once more.

Only to see it crash :) I'll re-edit if I find a solution (after the reboot).
RE-EDIT: no solution, driver does not get installed! Support for PeerGuardian has stopped.

BUT I do have some more information to add... Besides the list offered by the setup, you can add custom lists - also dynamically maintained. Some commercial, most free. Check them out here: http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=ijfqtofzixtwayqovmxn&fileformat=p2p&archiveformat=gz . Don't add them all, or you will be unable to visit the piratebay, the whitehouse or microsoft ;p

Concerning modifying hosts file: do not do it.

You need a large list -> a big hosts file. And Windows does not like that. Internet can become impossibly slow. Will become impossibly slow. Even with registry settings to limit DNS cache: it's just NOT the way to go. Sorry (k)

Any new p2p privacy project out there? Do let us know :)

Enjoy and...

Karma!

I never use P2P but PeerGuardian is my favourite app. Use it with MVPS Host blocker.

I haven't used this since about 2005.  To get my mp3's I've just been using Google and searching for RapidShare, MediaFire, MegaUpload, or 4shared.  I've almost always found the mp3 I want this way.

It takes a little more time, but its more secure IMO than using something like Limewire.

PeerGuardian 2 is Phoenix Labs' premier IP blocker for Windows. PeerGuardian 2 integrates support for multiple lists, list editing, automatic updates, and blocking all of IPv4 (TCP, UDP, ICMP, etc), making it the safest and easiest way to protect your privacy on P2P.

PeerGuardian 2 is Open Source, meaning the program code is available online for anyone who wants it. Not only does this allow you to make modifications or even branch off into your own project, but it encourages peer review of the code making sure any bugs are eliminated swiftly. Because PeerGuardian 2 is Open Source, you can rest assured there are no backdoors or spyware included.
