I've been looking for a utorrent replacement for quite some time now*... It's taking more and more computer resources without clear benefits. Sadly, no other client worked well enough. So I went on, updating utorrent every time.
Last week I decided to fill my NAS with 'some' music. I selected a few (about 10) large music collections. Think 40 to 140 GB each.
I did this on an i7 (first gen) with limited RAM (4GB, fully used), SSD disc, 1GB LAN, NAS with write speeds up to 150 a 200Mb/s. I mapped my download folder to this NAS, so all utorrent download activity takes place on the NAS (which should be able to handle that easily - HP Home Server, dual core with 4GB), which reduces stress on the client computer almost completely (except maybe RAM).
Result of this setup with large torrents? A non-responding utorrent client! I mean, really really horrible! Checking a download archive (with OR without pre file allocation on) takes a day, minimum! Clicking a torrent, selecting a torrent, setting options for a torrent... It's all pretty much impossible. No clear bottleneck to be found, just that it doesn't work ("utorrent is unresponsive... Do you want to end the task?").
SIGH.
So once more I went looking for other torrent clients (Windows). Vuze came by, some others... All discarded again by me
So now what?? The faster computers get, the less torrents I can download? F*ck that!
I googled on and arrived at this discussion:
https://www.reddit.com/r/torrents/comments/1ds43x/utorrent_trouble_disk_overload_100/ . I was looking for the effects of pre-allocation, cache sizes, disk caches on or off, etc. I noticed, once more, many people claiming that the answer to life, universe and everything else (including torrents), was uTorrent 2.2.1. I always disregarded that solution because I *hate* being one of those people that is stuck in the past when it comes to computers. The past in IT wasn't better, it's just nostalgia speaking! So going BACK in time to an OLD utorrent client... No, not my cup of tea! And theoretically it opens your computer up for exploits...
But modern torrent clients just weren't cutting it for me and I really needed some music in my new home...!
So for once, I went back in time... I downloaded uTorrent 2.2.1. It correctly found all my settings (and used it correctly too!). It continued my downloads and re-checked the torrents needed. Still not superfast, BUT my torrents now will *all* be checked within a 24 hour period... So not 10 days or more before I can resume downloading!**
My downloads aren't super fast, though I'm getting up to 4 a 6 MB download speeds in total. And more importantly, I can select torrents. Set options for them. Toggle whatever I want and the client will keep responding and working. ONLY thing still freezing utorrent is opening a new, large torrent. I can live with that
So... Years long search concluded by going back where we started once. I must be getting old for real now ;-)
