POST-EDIT: Here we go... The 2014 Gremlins have arrived The key given here will not work anymore! Nothing to do...
I think I finally found a (semi-) legal solution: a full fledged free all-round blu-ray (and dvd) player for Windows and Mac OS X!
It is a giveaway with the same serial for everyone. I'll be testing later, but for now here it is:

Still not SUPER happy... Got this tip todayDevvie,
as for the free DVD player, you can give DAPlayer a shot. It's a free multimedia player for windows and able to play Bluray, AVCHD, TS, MKV, MPEG4, H264 videos, DVD video and music CD, etc.
you can know the detailed info at http://www.winxdvd.com/daplayer/
Hope it helps.

It really is Christmas!
Not only did I find the semi-legal Aurora solution I just posted (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,7570.msg22060.html#msg22060), I actually found a truly free, genuine and updateable solution with Wondershare's Free Video Player for Windows or Mac OS X!
...
Why you don't use VLC-media player..It's free and really good!
Download it here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
...
BUT will the license be limited to 1-installation-only? If so, I cannot use it.

...
... Pot will not play dvd's: you MUST select the CORRECT sound devices (speakers!) and codecs (I just chose the first ones when I had to choose).
...
If you don't want to use codec packs (K-lite is quite nice) or VLC o MPC, then I would try with real player maybe?
