These days it feels like you can't even unroll toilet paper without seeing an icon for Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Instagram or any of the social media site. Personally, three years ago I stepped away from the rampant perpetration, hypocrisy, and narcissism that tends to be social media. I closed all my accounts with the exception of LinkedIn. I'm beginning to sway away from that one as well. More and more people are using it like Facebook. Even among work colleagues, I tend to be the odd man out. Someone is always talking about something they saw on a social media site. Mind you, what they saw is never work related or even a useful topic. I don't really see it as vital to my career to maintain a presence on the top sites. Are there any other IT pros that do not use, or in my case, kinda despise social media? Is it vital in your line of work?
And before anyone says it, I don't view forums as social media. They are discussions about a topic or shared information. Not 1000 likes on a picture of someone's new bikini or the sandwich they had for lunch.
