Bleepingcomputers, makers of the excellent and free cleanup-tool Combofix, also offers a download for Malware Bytes' Anti Malware.

It does not offer (Free) a real-time protection shield. So removed immediately.

Same for Emsisoft anti-malware.

Peace!

Next up: Lavasoft Ad-Aware.

I DO NOT LIKE LAVASOFT!

So we'll see in the re-edit how it went ; )

Peace!

RE-EDIT:

Well... I must say, I did not have many problems on my x86 Vista laptop. Running it for over 2 weeks, I did not see many problems.
Still, it consumes a lot of memory (stats: process 1 approx. 100MB workset, peak about 160 & for process 2, the tray icon, it's about 30MB.

Still, boot times were fast. I do not complain. Also, no CPU hogging noticed.

Why removing? Although I did not encounter false positives AND I USE CHROME, I do not know how close Ad-Aware comes to 100% protection. Still, I could live with all this.

BUT I also have noticed many instances (about 15 a 20% of the time?) Vista Security Center complaining that the antivirus and antispyware programs were turned off. This is NOT the known timing-bug - only a reboot convinces Vista on those occasions that all is well. Ad-Aware itself reports all ok!

I'm going to test a new program - I'll let you know in a reply. If I go back to AA, I'll let you know in a re-edit here.

RE-RE-EDIT:
I cloned one of my Vista's to a virtual VMWare box. In VMWare, suddenly I have lot's of CPU cycling problems with Ad-Aware. I guess it does not understands its surroundings? :s So removed from Virtual Box too ;p

Again: PEACE!

Everybody keeps raving about NOD32.

...

Also, it never really got my love. It was ok enough, but not good enough (false positives). A friend of mine loved it though ;p

Just like one of my best friends (IT Pro), He say that NOD32 have extremely good detection rate and that it's very light on resource consumption.

Next up: Lavasoft Ad-Aware.

I DO NOT LIKE LAVASOFT!

...

I also don't use Ad-Aware anymore, after they integrate Anti-Virus with Anti-Spyware.
Now, it's also "un-sticked" from SCF's Anti-Spyware area: http://scforum.info/index.php/board,12.0.html

your opinion/experience with Kaspersky http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,208.0.html

Thanks!

Don't use it ;p

Don't know about Kaspersky, but it's true that it have really huge number of Fans around a globe.

Link above is for Avira FREE AV... IMO, right now, AVIRA is the best Free AV solution for "regular" users. I really often install them to PC's of my friends and (in most cases) it work perfectly.

In my experience, Avast works well with regular users (I usually install Avast in my friends computers when they ask me for some AV, or when I do an OS reinstallation...)
But for me, I've used McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for years and I'll keep using it, It's just comfortable for me because I can configure almost every aspect and make it act automatically so I'm not even bothered when it finds something, also has a very good detection rate. The only con is the resource consumption, as the DAT file grows, so does the memory footprint and ths happens no matter what McAfee has tried to do with patches to VSE and to the engine itself, but my computer can handle it so I don't worry that much :p

Tried digital-defender antivirus.

Looks promising, no CPU hogging. RAM is high; about 150MB -> 200MB.

Removed again, for it ads a looooong time to the boot process. Think 1 or 2 minutes longer boot times. At least ;p

So bye bye :s

Peace!

If it hogs memory, boot will be a very long process....

Digital Defender Antivirus Free

"Antivirus software can be very hard to use, it often slows down your computer and seems to be built by engineers for engineers. We designed digital defender antivirus to be the opposite: easy to use, extremely fast and it should never slow down your computer..."

No comment. :)
