Any other IT pros that DON'T use social media?
« on: 10. May 2017., 19:51:57 »
These days it feels like you can't even unroll toilet paper without seeing an icon for Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Instagram or any of the social media site.  Personally, three years ago I stepped away from the rampant perpetration, hypocrisy, and narcissism that tends to be social media.  I closed all my accounts with the exception of LinkedIn.  I'm beginning to sway away from that one as well.  More and more people are using it like Facebook.  Even among work colleagues, I tend to be the odd man out.  Someone is always talking about something they saw on a social media site.  Mind you, what they saw is never work related or even a useful topic.  I don't really see it as vital to my career to maintain a presence on the top sites.  Are there any other IT pros that do not use, or in my case, kinda despise social media?  Is it vital in your line of work?

And before anyone says it, I don't view forums as social media.  They are discussions about a topic or shared information.  Not 1000 likes on a picture of someone's new bikini or the sandwich they had for lunch.

About LINKEDIN:

A - Recently, M$ Screwed The Site Completely, When They Changed The GUI, But I Live In Hope They Will Clean Their Act - It Is Taking A Long Time, Though,

B - For All Sorts Of Everyday Rants On Major Companies See This Site - http://downdetector.com/companies - Search For LINKEDIN On The Main Pages,

C - To Be Fair, LINKEDIN Is A Forum Too, Because You Can Create/Join Groups, And All Sorts Of News Articles, And Comment On Them - Lots Of Them Are IT Related - Like **Group Of IT Professionals**, Just To Name 1 Of The Many I Have Joined.

Cheers.

It makes sense in your line of work.  Though I doubt you'll be posting a pic of your lunch.   ;D

I completely agree with you... And while I have not completely closed many of my accounts, it has been almost 3 years that I stopped looking at them.... One of the best moves I think I could have made a few years back was to not link my new mobile to the site apps.... If something comes up I can still look at or check them every few months via a browser, but this way there is not as much irreverent, intrusive info sucking the life out of me.... As far as Linkedin it started to look like people were hawking for friend of profession recommendation requests, because they met me once or vouched for our abilities, it kinda felt like people were just trolling for contacts....

And while you can still locate relevant info at times, for the most part I feel that I don't need FB and many others like them to reach new clients or gain valuable resources in respect to IT....

I do still participate and lookup info on forums, but this does not really feel like social media to me...

Lots Of People Have Accepted 500+ Contacts, And Usually End Up Complaining About All The Spam They Get Afterwards.

Do Not Give/Accept Contacts/Recommendations/Endorsements To/From People You Do Not Know Personally, Or With Whom You Had Not Any Prior Meaningful Interaction.

Contacts/Recommendations/Endorsements Given/Accepted Can All Be Deleted.

The Bigger The Mess, The Harder The Cleaning But It Can Be Done - Roll Up Your Sleeves, And Get Busy.

By The Way, Stop Blaming LINKEDIN For All The Mess You Allowed Yourself To Be Sucked Into, Period.

Cheers.
