8 Tips to Survive and Thrive in Online School
« on: 13. October 2022., 18:30:56 »
1. Have a Designated Workspace
It's better to do any type of work in a specific location. This applies to online school as well. Create a learning environment that is focused on studies to set yourself up for success. Your brain will associate this space with achieving goals and getting work done, so it's important to do your work here. It doesn't matter if it's your backyard, your kitchen, living room, or closet. You need to find the right environment for you. You should choose a location that has an internet connection.
The top three things you should know:
You will need the books, notes, as well as appropriate browser tabs, to complete your classes on that day.
You can use headphones, earbuds or any other means to transmit audio from your device directly to your brain. This is especially useful for those times when your family starts to clatter about.
You will need a charger to charge your device. There is nothing worse than asking a teacher a question and having your phone die halfway through.
2. Stay organized and get organized
Once you have designated a workspace, it is time to organize. Although it seems easy enough to keep track of your items, you will soon find that there are three essays and a project. You also have notes and notes for the lecture on the history of bunny rabbits due at the end of each week. You suddenly find yourself disorganized and lack the motivation to get your workspace in order.
You can start by creating a simple set of folders in either a binder, or on your storage drives. Label each one with your classes. To organize your notes, homework, handouts, and projects, you can create folders within those folders. This folder should not be forgotten. It should be used daily, consistently, and with purpose. Once you have a solid foundation, don't hesitate to expand and modify it as needed. It will eventually become a lifeline that you cannot live without.
Backups are important in the event of an accidental crash or deletion.
3. Eliminate distractions
Set aside a time each day for school work and isolate yourself from all distractions. It's important to establish a routine when you enroll in an online course. For example, working for a certain amount of time after completing a task (e.g. You can work on history notes for up to two hours after having lunch on Mondays. It will be easier to keep it consistent if it is a routine. Make sure you are in a place that is quiet and free from distractions. (See tip 1).
It is important to set aside a study space that is free of distractions and outside noises. To avoid interruptions from social media, turn off the TV and set your devices to Do Not Disturb. This will ensure that you don't receive notifications during your cram session. A little background music can be helpful in relaxing, but it is important to keep it low. I find that LoFi and Classical music are great for getting the job done.
4. Attention
It is so easy, it might even work! It can be easy for students to become distracted by online classes. However, if you want your classes to succeed, you must pay attention. Take notes when the teacher speaks. Note only the most important points. You can also add time stamps to your notes if the lecture is recorded. Not only will it help you stay focused on the lecture, but it will also help you later when trying to remember what a bullfrog is from a toad.
You should be familiar with the "find" command ctrl+f if your notes will be stored online. This command can be used in most programs that search for words and phrases. It allows you to associate keywords and important information with definitions.
5. You must hold yourself accountable
Anyone who has taken an online course knows that it can be a pain to manage your time. You should set due dates for each assignment and make sure you check in at least once per week. This is not a recommendation to submit work late. Instead, establish deadlines that you can meet, while still respecting the timeframes set by your teachers.
You can reach out to your teacher if you have difficulty keeping track of your work. Although you might not be exempted from late penalties, you can let your teacher know that, regardless of the virtual setting, you still care about their class.
6. Take a break
Your productivity can be improved by taking frequent, short breaks. It is common for people to get a little lost after hours of study. A break of 5-10 minutes can help reduce brain strain.
Take these breaks to let your brain rest and forget about all the work you're doing. Move your body, get some water, grab a snack and relax. It may have been going off while studying. Check your phone during these times and make sure to turn off notifications when you return to school.

7. Treat Yourself
Celebrate a paper grade of A. Celebrate your A grade in class by throwing a party. Remember that you have a life. Spend time with loved ones, and do the things that make your heart happy. You'll burn out if you only study, do your homework, and cram.
Remember that classes and school will soon end and that you can do great things once that day comes. You can make it through life easier if you have something to inspire you.
8. Positive thinking is key
It's a difficult time for everyone and we couldn’t have predicted it. Smile, laugh, and enjoy the work you do. Although it may not be what your heart desires, it will help you grow as both a student as well as as a person.
