i'm hoping that by upgrading to 8.7i i'll be able to rejoin my school's network.  they use 8.5i and i had to uninstall it when i upped to win7, of course they never mentioned the two were incompatible.  still need patch 2 though

Good thread.  I was about to ask the same thing.  I run 8.5i on my WinXP box, that I'm about to update to Win7.  I prefer the well patched older Virusscans, so was wondering whether there was any good reason to update to 8.7i.  I guess 8.5i not working on Win7 is a good reason to update!

Well, The major differences between 8.5i and 8.7 are as follows..
Support : VSE 8.5i is not compatible with Windows 7 where as VSE 8.7i is.  It is incorrectly stated in the conversation above that VSE 8.5i is not supported on XP. It sure is supported.

Artemis :- Artemis is integrated both in the On Access Scanner as well as the On Demand Scanner in VSE 8.7i. Unlike VSE 8.5i for which you have to download a special Superdat to enable the Artemis. The Settings can be changed from the Virus Scan Console in VSE 8.7i for the Artemis but that does not hold true for VSE 8.5i.

And Perfromance :- VSE 8.7i is considered a lesser resource hog compared to VSE 8.5i..

I run 8.5i on my WinXP box, that I'm about to update to Win7.I prefer the well patched older Virus scans. This is because the VScan has the option to prevent anyone (including local machine or domain administrators) from disabling VScan processes.

Comparing 8.5 to 8.7 on the same machine , it appears that 8.7 requires more resources.  HOWEVER , 8.5 GOES EOL DECEMBER 2011.  One more year of support maximum  :-\

I have VS8,7i p1 installed on a Win7 64bit system. I got a message that the AntiVirus tool is not fully integrated in Win7. Is this fixed in the later patches?

I think that you need at least Patch 2 for this error... you have latest one Patch 4 at SCF. ;)

Simply browse SCforum.info and you'll find them: http://scforum.info/index.php?action=forum
