Google announces map contest for $50K
« on: 17. December 2009., 17:56:52 »

Google has announced their first Map Maker Global Competition, which asks users to add high quality data on universities, schools, hospitals and medical clinics using Google Map Maker: http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2009/12/map-makers-global-mapping-competition.html
Running until January 31st, 2010, the winner will receive a $50,000 UNICEF donation to a country of their choice.

The winner, whom may be an individual or part of a team, will also receive a VIP tour of local projects that will benefit from the donation and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Google Super Mappers 2010 conference. And of course, the winners contributions will appear on Google Maps.

Although Google is looking for the person who submits the most entries, all entries are subject to moderation by other participants to ensure submissions are of an acceptable quality. In turn, you will also moderate others' submissions, making it helpful to work with a partner or team. The quantity and quality of moderation performed will also be taken into consideration by the judges.

Leader of UNICEF's innovation drive focusing on youth, Gerrit Beger said, "We are delighted that Google is supporting UNICEF's efforts to help build a world fit for children. We know that mapping is a proven method to enhance community development. Google Map Maker is a powerful tool to create better situational awareness for both young people and communities at large. It will enable organizations like ours to better deliver services, respond to crises and adapt to change."

Google's Latin America mapping competition, which ended on Tuesday, saw over 50 teams from around the world participate, leading to a 500% increase in mapping activity. The winners from that competition will be announced on January 8, 2010.
