Warner Bros. hiring undercover anti-pirates
« on: 30. March 2010., 20:28:04 »

TorrentFreak reports that Warner Brothers UK is hiring college students with an IT background to participate in an internship that will pit them against the world wide pirating web in an effort to crack down on illegal digital distribution: http://torrentfreak.com/warner-bros-recruits-students-to-spy-on-pirates-100329/

The posting found at the University of Manchester reads:

"During the 12 month internship, duties will include: monitoring local Internet forums and IRC for pirated WB and NBCU content and in order to gather information on pirate sites, pirate groups and other pirate activities; finding new and maintaining existing accounts on private sites; scanning for links to hosted pirated WB and NBCU content and using tools to issue takedown requests; maintaining and developing bots for Internet link scanning system (training provided); preparing sending of infringement notices and logging feedback; performing trap purchases of pirated product and logging results; inputting pirate hard goods data and other intelligence into the forensics database; selecting local keywords and submitting local filenames for monitoring and countermeasure campaigns and periodically producing research documents on piracy related technological developments. Various training will be provided."

The intern will literally be on the front-lines of the epic battle against pirated content, ensnaring users in incriminating transactions, issuing takedown requests, and causing general frustration amongst the file-sharing population on the Internet.

TorrentFreak is actively encouraging members to sign up for the position in an effort to place a double agent inside the copyright infringement department at WB.

Dam,

I wondered when they would bring out the big guns!! I.e Us students who actually develop and design new software programs e.t.c, However the line "performing trap purchases of pirated product and logging results" could/would result in an entrapment lawsuit withing certain county's. So even if they did manage to prove you had "Illegally" downloaded material you could counter sue. So too me it's another one of these scare tatic's to put the most prolific sharer's off but knowing them I highly doubt it!! lol
But you can see they have gone up a gear in trying to catch these inderviduals!!

Im not trying to start a debate or anything as this is a Secuirty forum not P2P so apologies Samker, But it's always supprised me of the ammount of money and the lenghts these big fat cat corps will go to just to catch the odd indervidual out, How much does all that cost?? surley if they subsidised the digital download sector with this extra cash they always seem to find then maybe 90% of P2P users would'nt bother downloading form unknown sources as they know they could pay the £1 or £1.99 per film and get good download speeds direct from the author's site without it being capped by your ISP!! in fact given how many peeps would prob download it I would say the market does not even need to be subsidised it's just the digital rights holders need to wake up and smell the coffee because at the end of the day if your product is that good it will sell by itself with very little marketing "Apple" always seem to be able to pull it off!!! as you can all prob tell this topic does grate on me a little!!lol

This is best explanation (in my opinion): "'Avatar' Earnings Pass $2 Billion": http://oscars.movies.yahoo.com/blog/42-avatar-earnings-pass-2-billion
