SIgh.

First thing to check is bad sectors, low level way.

Download Linux Live boot cd (ubuntu, ...) for badblocks tool

sudo badblocks -sn -c 75000 -v /dev/hda

(or sda is seen too...)

IF that is succesful (no sectors are mentioned anymore), you should be able to run a chkdsk. If not, might be virus, but it's not first thing to think off.

Try chkdsk with right-click properties on C:-drive (under Computer). Also fails?

Do sfc /scannow from elevated command prompt (cmd.exe). Restart computer, try again.

If not, repost for instructions on boot-time registry flags...

Karma!

Scandisk was a tool that was included in Win3.x and Win9x--it is not available in Windows NT 4.0 and above, only chkdsk is available.

As far as being unable to defrag your drive, performing this action requires a certain amount of free space, so that files can be moved around, so if you are low on disk space, see if there are some things that can be deleted or moved off to another drive temporarily to free up some space.
