Does anyone know a really (!) GOOD specialized Windows DVD player?

I don't mean VLC or Pot-player or plugins for Media Player (Classic).

I mean real good specialized DVD player software for Vista (XP). Like DVD X Player (which is not free).

Anyone?

Peace!

Devvie

With http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?tag=pfindersrch&searchtype=downloads&query=dvd+player&filter=platform=Windows|&filterName=platform=Windows| I found http://download.cnet.com/AV-DVD-Player-Morpher/3000-7970_4-10458046.html?tag=api .

Altough it actually is made to morph your dvd's (which I do not use), user comments claim it to actually be a good DVD player. And indeed, it adds itself to autoplay options (VERY convenient) and my Pink Floyd DVD played just fine - with one exception...

As mentioned by many, by default the program cannot produce sound playback :(((( For that, it needs http://www.free-codecs.com/XP_Codec_Pack_download.htm and I do NOT want to install codec packs that mess up MY system :P

So, I'm still looking... I hoped BS.Player would work for DVD's, but it seems that DVD playback is a PRO feature. Sigh. Sheitmicrosoft :P

Peace!

If you don't want to use codec packs (K-lite is quite nice) or VLC o MPC, then I would try with real player maybe?

I don't have any doubts - BS.player is No.1.: http://www.bsplayer.com/bsplayer-english/download.html
I use them for years and it work like a charm. Yes you got a right, for DVD support you need to have PRO version... (let me know if you choose them, maybe I'll "find" one license for you from one of my friends ;) ).

Alternatively here you have three FREE solutions for testing:

1. Zoom Player: http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml

2. GOM Media Player: http://player.gomlab.com/eng/

3. UMPlayer (open source): http://www.umplayer.com/download/

Don't forget to provide us feedback...  ;)

Sigh...

: )

It's on my to-do list. And I'm always willing to adopt homeless licenses - that's the kind of sweet gal I am ;p

BUT will the license be limited to 1-installation-only? If so, I cannot use it. I use a master image that I clone for my friends if they get a new pc. Saves me a lot of hassle :) But on Vista... A really good DVD player for just DVD's WITHOUT codecs to mess up my OS... It's a pain in the ass!

In general, I really prefer Pot-player. VLC, after 15 years?, finally lost. Mostly due to it's interface (to advanced) and its bad colours.

Luckily I by now have solved Pot-players DVD playback problems and I'll test that solution further too! After setup, by default, Pot will not play dvd's: you MUST select the CORRECT sound devices (speakers!) and codecs (I just chose the first ones when I had to choose).

Till repost!

Peace!

Related to codecs problem... take advice from "jheysen" and try K-lite (for the start Basic version): http://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

I'm 99% sure that with them, you'll resolve all problems related to codecs. ;)

I know but... I don't like codecs in my OS. I'm from the pre-W95 generation and we got SCARED like hell for codecs in our system32 :P

Even today, I just do not like them. A program should offer it by default with build-in codecs.

IF I have to install codecs (I usually refuse), I go for the Shark007 codec pack. He sees things my way, which gives me a comfortable feeling. Did not encounter real problems with it, but it doesn't solve everything either.

So for now Daum Pot Player will stay my default - way better than any codec anyway.

I'll also give another look at proposed DVD players...

Thanx & Peace!

I used VLC as the ONLY program for over 10 years. Version 0.8.6.1 I believe? ;p Anyways, while it indeed plays EVERYTHING it does have problems with DVD playback. Yes it plays VOB's just fine, and yes you can just right-click a folder and play the contents. BUT for actually starting to play a real DVD with menu's and all, VLC just isn't up to the job.

Also I noticed, mainly by MANY complaints of my friends, that the colours aren't good with VLC. And even I could not ignore that anymore once Windows 7 came out. Movies suddenly had GREAT colours, while VLC's still were much less bright and vivid.

This led to a search for better for my non-Win-7-friends. And everybody agrees: Daum Pot Player is THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK! No discussions whatsoever.

Don't download it from their site, you will end up all Chinese. Instead, google for "latest daum pot player english download" and work from one of the mirror sites found.

And for DVD playback, well... Pot needs a little extra attention - and being Dutch... I always give pot all the attention it needs ; ))

*kuch* peace! *uh kuch*
