Add regular start menu to Windows 8
« on: 08. January 2013., 15:22:05 »
I know this program from waaaay back 2012, promotion on giveawayoftheday.

Once commercial, it now is fully free and even more important: being actively developed. It also supports Windows 8 and that is great for it will add a regular start button and menu to your task bar.

More information? http://www.handystartmenu.com/

Copy pastes:

Short Lists
The days of massive lists in your Start menu are gone. Now you can have short and handy lists of programs. Thanks to Handy Start Menu, you can automatically group and reduce useless items. Your standard Start menu will become shorter and simpler.

You can bring back the Start menu button in Windows 8 OS with the free utility Handy Start Menu.
After installing and launching the program under Windows 8, you will notice the Start menu has appeared on the taskbar in the Desktop application.
The button is handy to launch applications in the desktop mode. This is convenient because you don't have to switch to the home screen only for the sake of launching a program and switching back to the desktop. Now all actions are performed from the same place.
Applications are sorted by groups automatically based on the built-in application type database of Handy Start Menu.
The current version of Handy Start Menu implements two functions for now - running desktop applications and automatic sorting. New versions will gradually extend the functionality of the program by including other capabilities of Windows 7's Start menu.

Enjoy and...

Peace!

FROM: http://tweakers.net/meuktracker/29574/classic-shell-362.html

Another program, with a completely different approach, is Classic Shell - which emulates all start-menu styles.

Program site: http://www.classicshell.net/

Direct download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/

Classic Shell is a collection of usability enhancements for Windows. The main features are:
Highly customizable start menu with multiple styles and skins
Start button for Windows 7 and Windows 8
Toolbar and status bar for Windows Explorer
Caption and status bar for Internet Explorer

Only 22h left! Giveaway of the Day - Start Menu X Pro
« Reply #2 on: 21. February 2013., 09:26:31 »
====> POST EDIT: PROGRAM BLOWS SMALL BALLS :( <=======
----> SO SKIP GIVEAWAY ALTOGEHTER ;p <-----

Currently, on Win 8 x64, I use BOTH programs described here TOGETHER!

Only thing I'm still missing is the "Computer" link in classicshell. Clicking Start button for a second time will give me a great ordered list with my installed softwares, thanks to Handy Start Menu.

Today, there is a 3th alternative: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/start-menu-pro/

Copy Paste:
"Giveaway of the Day - Start Menu X Pro

February 21, 2013
Start Menu X is a replacement of the system menu for professionals. Power users are a lot more demanding, and it’s not surprising – instead of a petty dozen of programs they have hundreds! This means that they need a solution developed by professionals for professionals. Find out how to find and launch programs without scrolling, extra clicks and moves – this is Start Menu X.

Features

Single-click launch. The PRO version allows you to assign a primary program to any folder and start it simply by clicking this folder.
Virtual Groups. Group programs by purpose (office applications, graphics, etc) without changing their location on the hard drive.
Flexible configuration. Customize the menu to your taste! Change the structure and add tabs.
Years of experience. Start Menu X is an embodiment of 7-year experience in developing alternative menu solutions."

Only 22 hours left!

Why do you dislike the StartMenuX program?

Of the two free programs, which is most like the old start menus of Win7 and WinXP?

StartMenuX tries to do many things, but at first glance you are just greeted with a mess: total garbage.

Classic Shell pretty good approaches a normal start menu, and altough screenshots show  Computer too, I cannot find this option. Still, it works more or less like you are used too.

Handy Start Menu is totally different approach, and actually "just" for the All Programs part... There it will do its magic, organizing your programs into groups.

Install both. Press once, regular start menu (with Classic), press again and get grouped list. Paradise, almost :)

Karma...

I can advise iObit's Start Menu 8!

(http://www.iobit.com/iobitstartmenu8.php), (http://iobit-startmenu8.en.softonic.com/)

Tip from WildCat @ http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/start-menu-pro/#comment-342170

In my case it adds a second start button (besides the HSM/CS combo-button) with a truly regular looking start menu. Right click Computer is possible!
I can not find any settings (besides auto-start with Windows). Which is bad, because I'd love to add Downloads to the list...

Still, enjoy?

Didn't they say the same thing for Win 8.1? :) But yeah, anticipating it too... Even Bill Gates admitted (Dutch TV?) recently that Microsoft 'made a mistake' with win 8.x (concerning start menu)
