Here a review from Softpedia:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/PcBoost.shtml

BETTER FREE ALTERNATIVES (not mentioned by Ashraf)

* ThrottleStop (==> only for advanced users)
Amazing FREE and highly customizable APP which helps you adjust the performance of your Intel CPU according to the programs you are using, as well as protect your PC from overheating using the ‘BD PROCHOT’ option. What it does is to automatically detect your CPU type and speed, offering you 4 CPU performance profiles: optimized performance, gaming, Internet navigation and battery support.
For instance, if you choose the “battery support” profile, it lowers the CPU speed by decreasing the multiplier value for your processor, so as to reduce the power usage when your laptop is running on battery. Cool, isn’t it? Perfect for laptop nerds like me…..LOL!

Download (==> should you be for some reasons reluctant to register on their compelling forum):

* (Portable) Actual Booster
As the award winning “Process Lasso” this magic tiny cool FREE tool can dramatically optimize your PC performance, making your system faster and more stable, by automatically allocating the majority of your system resources (CPU power, RAM etc…) to the currently active applications or games.

* Mz CPU Accelerator 4.1
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/CPU-Tweak/Mz-Cpu-Accelerator.shtml

* PTray
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/PTray.shtml

And if you are a frantic PC GAMER like our friend Whiterabbit from UK:

* Razer Game Booster (==> incredible powerful FREE app)
So far the only tool I tried which has really made a huge difference on my system while playing games!!!

And from Ashraf's article (http://dottech.org/129621/windows-review-pcboost-program/):
"... if you have CPU usage issues, give Process Lasso (which has Free and Pro versions) or Process Tamer (freeware) a try. They apply different methods than PCBoost to try to reign in rogue CPU usage to ensure the best performance possible; methods which I feel are a bit more useful than what PCBoost does. If you don’t have CPU usage issues (e.g. you have a modern, fast computer)… then why are you reading this review?

My personal opinion: you better NOT use it on SLOW hardware... I know that that are the systems you want to boost, but it comes with a price: more software consuming resources... ;p But on hardware with plenty of resources to spare... Tools like this can do their work and make your system even smoother.
I do have one other tip: Chameleon TaskManager. That program worked best for managing RAM, even on slow hardware. But do not use it for CPU throttling... And also AnVir TaskManager offers CPU throttling, but I did not like it for that (only for startup management and warnings).

So in short: THIS will work - other combinations will lead to problems (especially on slow hardware)
1. AnVir TaskManager as startup guard and Home page guard. Do not use for CPU.
2. Process Lasso. Let it manage CPU and only CPU.
3. Chameleon TaskManager. Let is manage RAM and only RAM.

Also do take a more detailed look into all this, here:  GOTD: Chameleon Taskmanager: a general discussion + some alternatives: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=7576.0#sthash.eIvWHRSC.dpuf

That is my 5,000,000 cents ;pp

hmmm... I'm a little bit skeptical with all kind of "system boosters"...  :-X

I wasn't finished ;p

I added some more info at the end of the article to explain what works (and what not).

A short copy paste from another article of I mine (that I link to in my new re-edit):
"I'm using the following program settings:
* Chameleon:
Disabled are; All CPU options
Enabled are: If RAM of any program exceeds > 100MB ++ if overall RAM exceeds 90% ++ if File Cache exceeds 0% (auto) ++ if hard drive usage any program > 8MB/s ++ If frozen program is detected.
* AnVir Task Manager
Balance CPU Optimization is OFF. All startup-related defend options are on. SO, I use AnVir to guard startup entries only and NOT for performance tuning - here I will use Process Lasso for that.
* Process Lasso
A program for which I still don't know if it's a nuicanse or a blessing. I hope to find out with this system...
Settings? Profile = Pro-Balance Enabled. I also run the program to tune system services. The rest is by default: complicated stuff one should not quickly deviate on..."  - See more at: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=7576.0#sthash.eIvWHRSC.dpuf

I was looking for a free alternative for Windows that will automatically tune windows ram processes per my liking like Chameleon offers. There, I can assign certain specified RAM usage values, even for system processes like Microsoft Update! This is very convenient on low RAM systems. Also Chameleon allows the same but for disk usage.

I'm looking for alternatives, for Chameleon is not free and does not seem to like Giveaway of the day anymore :s

Anyone?

Well D., did you ever tried "TuneUp Utilities": http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/features/

It's expensive ($50) but it have "all" you need, at least to me it seems so... ;)
