I'm unfamiliar with which coins use SHA-256d. My understanding is that Bitcoin, PPCoin, Terracoin, Freicoin, Bytecoin, Namecoin, IXcoin, and Devcoin all use SHA-256. I'm sure there are some others that I'm not aware of as well.
Is there an example of an SHA-256d coin?

GREAT overview!

Can you use Bitcoin ASIC hardware to mine SHA256 alt-coins? Namecoin, Terracoin, PPcoin, and a few others use SHA-256. Couldn ASIC devices (Avalon, BFL, etc) that are used to mine Bitcoins be used to mine other SHA256 based coins? Could you just use a BFL Single and have Cgminer point at a PPcoin pool to start mining away?

Like wise, could FPGAs used to mine Litecoin be used for other Scrypt coins?

And to see which currencies are SHA-256d or scrypt-only, see this: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/List_of_alternative_cryptocurrencies

So many more questions... But yeah, I think it has a Big Future...

POST EDIT: yes it can be done! My question if I can mine other currencies with my 55GH butterflylabs ASIC miner, is answered! Found the confirmation here: www.reddit.com/r/peercoin/comments/1rjck5/best_way_to_mine_peercoin/ - sure check it out! Just point your miner to a new pool and done. Just as it should and I hoped. Hashing is hashing ;p

Today, I stumbled upon https://www.multipool.us .

For mining a single coin - ASIC (SHA-256)
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Freicoin (FRC)
- PeerCoin (PPC)
- Terracoin (TRC)
- Zetacoin (ZET)

For mining a single coin - Scrypt
- Litecoin (LTC)
- FeatherCoin (FTC)
- Mincoin (MNC)
- WorldCoin (WDC)
- DigitalCoin (DGC)
- NovaCoin (NVC)
- LuckyCoin (LKY)
- Argentum (ARG)
- PhenixCoin (PXC)
- MegaCoin (MEC)
- BottleCaps (CAP)
- Cryptogenic Bullion (CGB)
- TagCoin (DISABLED)
- DogeCoin (DOGE)
- Diamond (DMD)
- FedoraCoin (TIPS)
- Grandcoin (GDC)

So, at least with a multipool and middlecoin one should be able to use their butterfly labs ASIC miner for something else besides bitcoins ;p

Www.Multiipool.us and middlecoin both offer  services to auto-switch. The community is against this kind of stuff, so do read this: www.cryptocoinsnews.com/2013/09/09/digitalcoin-update-attempts-to-ward-off-multipools/

Oh, so ASIC hardware could really be recycled. What I love about ASIC is that it work just as well on Peercoin as they do Bitcoin.
