Title: Devnullius's Choices: a list of default programs to keep your PC running well :)
Post by: devnullius on 10. June 2013., 08:57:19
v2.10, December 2021
----

I always install the same programs for my friends, but once in a while I forget one or two temporarily or even forever ;p

Planning to do this for a long time, I decided to add a (long) list with (free) software I like and a short description when needed. Might take me a few months years ; )

So here it goes... Devnullius's Latest Choices: a list of default programs to keep your Windows 10 PC running well, 2021 Edition!

----
(Windows XP / Vista users, please go to my old archived article: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8202.msg30480.html#msg30480)

(Windows 7 users, please go to my old archived article: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=8202.msg41831#msg41831 for some tools not included in my post 2019 drafts.... And Windows 10 users might find some older tools still of interest to them.)

(Windows 7 and Windows 8 users should have updated to Windows 10 by now. It still can be done for free, the old upgrade deadline was but a symbolic one...!)^^^^^

==================== MUST HAVEs ====================

1. REGISTER ALL YOUR EMAIL ADDRESSES HERE: https://haveibeenpwned.com/
Really. Do it. NOW! Don't forget to register...!!!

2. Internet browsers
There never was any discussion, even from the earliest builds I'd make Google Chrome the default internet browser. Sadly, these days pretty much all browsers are Chromium based and Google has slowly become evil when it comes to your privacy. While I'm still stuck to Google Chrome for my day to day routines, there are other options available. Some with independant tech, others as highly tweaked Chromium clones. If privacy is of concern, only FireFox seems to be your real friend. I don't like FireFox! But I really, really, REALLY should...!
So what to do next? It's up to you, but I'll share my setup with you. I still use Chrome for day-to-day activities and browsing. Opera (http://www.opera.com/) for all my video wishes and Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org) / Edge as backup browsers if something doesn't work in those two. And I set cryptocurrency-based Brave as the default browser to catch all automatically opening websites by local programs. It's the only browser that I set NOT to re-open last opened tabs as the program starts.
IF YOU WANT TO KEEP IT SIMPLE: Edge already is installed by default and it has become a nice browser to use. Yes, Edge.

3. Internet Browser Security
I strongly advise you to also install Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free (https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-exploit/). This program used to be free with limited functionality. Version 1.09+ has become part of their Pro suite, though a beta still is available (https://forums.malwarebytes.com/forum/126-anti-exploit-beta/) for users whom register.
IMPORTANT: multi-user systems! MBAE must be installed for each user in its own program files directory, otherwise only the first logged in account can use it.

4. Internet Browser Privacy
Unless you are willing to install ad-blockers, I strongly advice you to install DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials extension (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=DuckDuckGo+Privacy+Essentials+extension&t=opera&ia=web). It will block hidden trackers lurking everywhere.

5. Cloud Security (with optional ClamAV shields)
Immunet: http://www.immunet.com/. Also works on all Windows Server versions. This is mostly for unexperienced Home users. Advanced users might get annoyed by the many false positives triggered by cracks and warez etc.

6. Antivirus
* Home users should use this:
* * Avast Home antivirus (http://www.avast.com/ (http://www.avast.com/get/qdYKOrBj)). You might want to read this first (http://web.archive.org/web/20201225185107/https://www.winhelp.info/put-avast-free-antivirus-2020-on-a-diet.html), before installing. By default, you get many 'demo' versions installed... With constant reminders! ^^
* Geeks could use this:
* * 360 Total Security (or even 360 Total Security Essentials)
IF you don't like all the Avast pop-ups, take a look at 360 Total Security (http://www.360totalsecurity.com/). Enable both Avira and Intel shields if you like to be paranoid. It has become my default anti-virus, despite the annoying "possible virus found" dialogues...
* Freaks
* * Tech-lovers could install both... Avast has a Passive mode if you are afraid of conflicts between the two. I'm hard-core and I enable Avast's Active protection while simultaneously running 360 Total Security.
* Windows Server
* * Baidu Antivirus (http://antivirus.baidu.com/en/)
Looks like a professional AV and I install it on my Windows Servers... Baidu is one of the few that will work (for free) on Windows Server OSs.
UPDATE JUNE 2021: tried installing it on Windows 10, but it seems that Baidu software isn't updated any longer and it won't install on the latest Windows 10 versions. I'll remove it completely once I confirmed this holds true for Windows Server too.
* Got nothing else??
Sure. This 2021 list looks good to me: https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-free-antivirus-protection.

Some details...
Avast is superior in preventing false positives. Yet, with 360 TS I feel safe and less annoyed by interruptions :) One disadvantage is that you need to manually check for updates of the program version: that won't upgrade automatically. And DO TAKE A CAREFUL LOOK which services get shut down after 360 'optimized' your system... For example, Defrag & Check Disk Health should remain ON but 360TS disables them when optimizing the system. See more on this in item 13. Anvir Task Manager below...

TIP: if you are as annoyed with Windows Defender, don't be annoyed any longer! GO TO https://www.sordum.org/9480/defender-control-v1-6/

7. Add 'Upload to VirusTotal (https://www.virustotal.com/nl/documentation/desktop-applications/)' context menu. Direct download: https://www.virustotal.com/static/bin/vtuploader2.2.exe

8. Defrag
Starting with Windows 10 I trust Microsoft knows best. Leave its default settings alone. Contrary to popular believe, SSDs still can benefit from defragmentation, so don't start disabling it completely. But truth be told... In these days with the big HDDs and even SSDs, defragmentation has become less of a concern. As long as your disks are below 60% capacity, don't bother! But IF you insist... Puran Defrag (http://www.puransoftware.com/Puran-Defrag.html) is a nice all-rounder.

9. While Windows 10 already gives you OneDrive Cloud Storage, I strongly advise you to install pCloud Drive too! It has lots of features, including a sync folder, 20GB & auto-backup / import other cloud storage solutions! Sign up HERE: https://my.pcloud.com/#page=register&invite=EVu7ZQMnluX (If you have a free pCloud account, after 6 months of inactivity, it will be permanently deleted, along with the files inside.)

10. 7-zip. Also see item 3 about WinRAR in the next chapter! http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

11. Cleanup! (http://stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/CleanUp452.exe) by Steven Gould (and not that crap CCleaner!! If only for it does NOT clean ALL user accounts. Cleanup! can, if you set the right options). Set option to scan all users. Use my CHecKDiSK scripts and Task Manager to autorun and clean whenever a user logs on. It slows your start down and it also wears your harddrive down; in return you get a clean system and most importantly: you might remove malware that just started to infect your machine and did not get time yet to start themselves...
Advanced tip: in the last tab, enable Temporary Files but remove the "*.chk"-line... You don't want to delete recovered files ; )

12. Download (http://dl2.acronis.com/s/ADM_en-US.exe) Acronis Drive Monitor NOW. It will check Windows & SMART logs and notify you as soon as the earliest signs of SSD or HDD damages appear.... (mirror (https://app.box.com/s/g12ohu8bj17n8l3i2aqm)) .
You also might want to read Hard Disk Tools (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,7955.msg19883.html#msg19883) and HardDisk Sentinel Standard vs. Acronis Drive Monitor (free) (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8087.msg20515.html#msg20515).

13. Uncheck that check-box!
User tip (http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=13175.msg35013#msg35013): UnChecky (https://unchecky.com/) - if you don't need all those bonus tools you get offered, or even hate them... Try this little gem ; -)

14. AnVir Task Manager as a startup guard
By default, Windows 10 users now have an easy way to disable regular programs that have added themselves to the auto-start programs of Windows. You can easily disable programs in the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del).
You need a startup guard to WARN you against new programs trying to always run when you start your computer. A popular choice is WinPatrol. I have a family lifetime license, and do not like it. It's old-fashioned and at moments annoyingly dumb :(
My personal preference by far is AnVir Task Manager. The program really is the best to manage startup items on your PC, despite many programs reporting or blocking it as "unwanted" software... :( Also, often the GUI looks to be 'crashed'. Give it time, it will always start responding again, but it might take some time.
Set its options to only show HDD icon (WITH temperature notification). Other settings can be left alone. Only use it as a startup guard (also guards your browser's homepage). See: http://www.anvir.com/task-manager-windows-startup.htm . Optionally, set a Google Alert to get the pro version; this program often is given away for free.
Not all is paradise though! Like I said, a big disadvantage is that the custom user interface mostly seems to crash and not respond. Wait a little, it will start reacting again. Learn to live with it ;p It is definitely a program to get - hdd temperature monitoring ++ startup manager. For CPU throttling, there are better (non-free) programs. For now, leave CPU managed by Windows.
IMPORTANT: multi-user systems! If you have multiple users, you need to install AnVir to a separate program files folder for each user. Things get messy if you don't ;p

AntiVirus NOTES: once you have installed all programs and the antivirus programs and have it clean and optimize your system, DISABLE both Avast & 360 TS for an hour. ONCE DISABLED you can start AnVir Task Manager and go to the quarantined list (bottom). There, you'll find a few essentials that got disabled. Usually, those items have an icon. Check them. Enable things like defragmentation, hard disk health checks and more. Some programs still think these are the Windows 95 years... We know better. Even AnVir itself might be prevented from auto-starting. With both Avast and 360 TS shields disabled, you can safely enable it again to always start when you log in. Once all is enabled, you can enable the AV shields. They won't disable it again (until you 'fix' your PC again!).

15. Advertisement Management and Blocking!
A. On OS level (Windows)
- DNS based solution: https://adguard.com/en/adguard-dns/instruction.html#instruction (not tested: I expect slow browsing due to slow DNS responses).
B. So I started to look at extra ad-blocking tools that hardly ever 'corrupt' websites (access denied or other problems). The Ad-Muncher developers advice uBlock Origin (https://www.google.nl/search?q=ublock+origin&oq=ublock+origin&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.1679j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8). It's a good all-rounder (pop-up blocking + ad-blocking + annoyances blocking).

I like to add two more extensions...
- In the browser I use for videos (Chrome / Opera / FF): Popup Blocker (strict) (https://www.google.nl/search?client=opera&q=Popup+Blocker+(strict)&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8)
- Chrome / Opera / FF: AdGuard AdBlocker (https://adguard.com/en/adguard-adblock-browser-extension/overview.html) (the Windows program is NOT free, the extensions are... I never install Fanboy's filters, because I like to share tweets. For a list of filters I do install, take a look here (http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=8202.msg34062#msg34062)).
With these 3 extensions added, I have a good all-round protection against ads WITHOUT (hardly) any notifications that I'm not allowed to do something because I'm using advertisement blockers... Tested and verified with swatchseries.to.
Test all other websites for yourself, because this WILL give problems if you visit lots of (illegal) websites. Disable AdGuard and uBlock to test a website or open the website in another browser if you suspect a web-page is not working well because of it.

16. IObit Uninstaller (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/iobit_uninstaller.html). BE WARNED: every update / installation has an almost invisible little check box to install other iobit crapware. DO NOT INSTALL THOSE! Even better, train AnVir to always remove certain helper-programs. Iobit Uninstaller itself is clean and good though, even when removing their own products Xd! It's just those annoying extras they keep pushing :/ Feel free to Quarantine it all with AnVir Task Manager.
Note to self: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=8297.msg gives supposedly better uninstaller alternatives. I should check them out.

==================== REALLY SMART TO INSTALL TOO ====================

1. PDF...
Strictly spoken, you don't need a tool for PDF. That said, I still like to install this lean mean reading machine (http://www.stdutility.com/download.html)!
I disapprove of Acrobat Adobe Reader because it's so often hacked, and slow. STD Viewer (http://www.stdutility.com/download.html) also reads PDF files, without the risk on virii ;-)
Need more, like editing PDF? http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8595.0.html has a whole discussion about it. For example, you could use Ableword (http://www.ableword.net/startdownload.html)  or TEST 3StepPDF Powefull PDF Processor (https://darcyripper.com/features/downloads/) and let us know if you liked it...? ; )

2. Screensavers should be essentials too...!! :)
* Electric Sheep (https://electricsheep.org/windows/), a genetic algorithm based screensaver with abstracts (upvote image with arrow up, downvote with arrow down). Optional: don't forget to download Sheep-pack 1 (https://archive.org/details/electricsheep-packs-244) and pack 2 (https://archive.org/details/electricsheeppackmostlyflock202) for extra nice images!^^^^^^ Set V-Sync to enabled. Set FPS for playback to "3", which will give the nicest results, I feel :)
* The best OpenGL screensavers from http://www.reallyslick.com/screensavers/. One of them, Helios, really stands out I feel. I like it with these values: Ions=32. Animation speed=8. Ion size=100. Camera speed=1. Emitters2. Blur=24. Attractors=5. Limit=0. Feel free to tune a bit to your likings though :)

3. 7-zip works for most. But... To top it all of and be prepared for ANYTHING... Do this: download & install WinRar (http://www.win-rar.com/download.html).
FILE ASSOCIATIONS! Associate 7-zip with all extensions EXCEPT *.zip and *.iso. THEN associate WinRar with NOTHING, except for *.rar files and any archive formats not yet assigned.

4. Burning CD/DVD on Windows is a pita. Especially with many burners, it can take hours to create a dvd, if succeeding at all. The solution is free and simple: https://cdburnerxp.se/. Even has some ISO conversion tools. Enjoy!

5. Watching Local Music and Video Files
- VLC (https://www.google.com/search?q=vlc+x64+download&oq=vlc+x64+download) plays it all...
- ... but Daum Pot Player English plays it prettier (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/potplayer.html). Be careful when installing: comes with many crapware options... The program also handles DVD, but is not a specialized dvd player. See point 5, below, for that!
NOTE to FUTURE self: http://acestream.org/

6. For torrents: if you insist on utorrent, only use utorrent 2.2.1. I explained more here (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,11042.msg30268.html#msg30268). You can still download (https://app.box.com/s/if7kk4qjkxz3n1jm03nsjj5xkxiqe9bi) it. These days I'm using qBittorent (http://www.qbittorrent.org/).
I'm also TESTING Tribler (http://www.tribler.org/), which offers built-in TOR anonymity and works with Token Rewards for uploading and downloading.

To search for torrents, I use Bit Che (http://convivea.com/product.php?id=2). Bit Che searches many torrent sites at once. Recently I also started to use Jackett. It looks complicated for beginners, but I made an easy walk-through, here: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=18149.msg44616#msg44616

7. Watching TV Series & Movies Online
I wrote all I know here: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=16149.msg41966 - definitely worth a read, if I don't mind saying so...
NOTE to FUTURE self: http://acestream.org/

==================== REALLY SMART TO UNINSTALL TOO ====================

This article will show you some powershell commands to remove most of the bloatware you don't want: https://windowsloop.com/uninstall-microsoft-store-apps/

==================== IF YOU LIKE THE DETAILS ====================

1.https://recyclebinex.en.uptodown.com/windows/download. Schedule it to empty your recyclebin automatically every 30 days (or as often as you like).

2. Backgrounds
A. If you are not in a hurry, you can slowly start collecting and saving all the Microsoft Spotlight & Bing backgrounds into 1 folder and use it with Windows Slideshow. More instructions, here: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=16159.msg41998#msg41998
B. If you like to start with a huge collection of images, download my archive (https://my.pcloud.com/publink/show?code=kZLF5nkZLNdYHQcrlE4Rb45qRC7krzbBBunV) and;
- use John's Background Switcher (https://johnsad.ventures/software/backgroundswitcher/) (smart)
- use Windows Slideshow (cumbersome, technical know-how needed) http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=8202.msg41968#msg41968
C. Make your own archive by ripping websites. Go to http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=16069.msg41857#msg41857. Chapter "3. Setting Windows Slideshow" has even more instructions for using Windows Slideshow.
D. (BEST OPTION) Install Bing Wallpaper (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/daily-desktop-wallpaper/9nblggh4tjv1?activetab=pivot:overviewtab) - a link will be given in the Windows Background Settings.

3. DVD Player...I think I finally solved this one! Wondershare Free Video Player. ^^^^ It *is* discontinued again, but you can still download it from here http://download.wondershare.com/inst/player_setup_full1374.exe.

4. User auto-logon? Use command 'netplwiz':
Win 10 http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-automatically-login-in-windows-10/ .

5. Power options! Go to control panel and manually set the details to your liking. BUT make sure that Start Menu Shut Down does NOT go to sleep, but actually will power down your pc / laptop. Same goes for closing the lid!! On laptops, leaving sleep or hibernate on is dangerous - the laptop still produces heat. When in a closed off environment, your laptop might overhead (hard drive damage or more!).
The main reason for forcing an actual shut down when you're done with your computer instead of sleep mode, is that updates will be installed this way. A computer (laptop) always going to sleep mode will often not install or update Windows. And that's bad ;p

6. OFFICE Alternatives
For Microsoft Office Viewers in all languages, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979860 Support halted in 2017!.

For actual Microsoft Office alternatives, which allow you to EDIT documents...? From http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8399.msg21457.html#msg21457 , I chose SoftMaker FreeOffice (http://www.softmaker.net/down/freeoffice2016.exe). One catch: I've seen systems where file association during setup wasn't remembered. You can start every program and re-associate from the menu options. That works.

7. OFFICE and Gmail: tvhgooglemapi
If you want to use the "email" button in Microsoft Office but only use gmail and don't like Outlook, you must take a look at this: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,11012.msg30196.html#msg30196. Gives download page: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B5rR8r10bVzvQklLN0cxMEFFWXM&usp=sharing#list .

8. Image editing: 2 programs that complement each other very well to cover all basic tasks one might wish for...
* Paint.NET: https://www.dotpdn.com/downloads/pdn.html
* Photo! Editor from http://pho.to/editor/ (download: http://filehippo.com/download_photo_editor/tech/)
Bonus: has some smart features for mass-editing: http://PhotoScape.org/

9. DAMN NFO Viewer: if you download warez, you will like this .nfo viewer :) http://nl.afterdawn.com/downloads/desktop/mix_desktop_tools/damn_nfo_viewer.cfm

10. Help Windows removing a USB drive... http://quickandeasysoftware.net/software/usb-disk-ejector. If you installed 360 Total Security, you don't need extra software: USB removal is already included with 360 TS.

11. CHecKDiSK scripts, also by Devnullius: https://app.box.com/s/j49i8mrh1io1iz7k9lrozi7878h4qqh8 .
* Extract to folder and put CHecKDiSK folder in the root of your system drive (usually C:). Make sure to read °°°°°°°° RUN ONCE °°°°°°°°°°.txt file! ^^^
* Vista/7/8/10 users can import^ the tasks from c:\CheCKDiSK\Windows\System32\Tasks-folder and only need to adjust windows user name (and maybe adjust frequency of scheduled disk checks).
* See http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8077.msg20485.html#msg20485 for more background discussions about my compress.bat script...
- CHecKDiSK-folder contains more .bat-scripts, tailored for specific needs, languages and drives... Adjust to your liking's! Windows 10 always needs "English", even is your system locals are set differently.

12. Save BROWSER RAM!
Install the extension The Great Suspender (https://www.google.com/search?q=the+great+suspender&oq=the+great+suspender) for your browser...! It puts tabs to sleep  :-X

13. Centralized Chat Client
Meet Franz! https://meetfranz.com/

==================== THINGS YOU WON'T NEED... ====================

(... but might like!)

1. IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREE graphic viewer: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=702.0

2. LightShot is the fastest way to take a customizable screenshot: https://app.prntscr.com/en/index.html

3. Add 'Take Ownership' to Context Menu (http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3841-take-ownership-add-context-menu-windows-10-a.html) in Windows.

4. Unlock locked files. Unlocker (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/unlocker.html) 1.9.2 *used* to be the best program to unlock files. Sadly, they aren't doing a good job since Windows 8.x/10. So without a lot of testing, here are some tools that should do a proper job on Windows 10...
- MalwareBytes FilesASSASSIN (https://www.malwarebytes.com/fileassassin/)
- IOBit Unlocker (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/iobit_unlocker.html) (be aware of crapware extras!)
- LockHunter (http://lockhunter.com/)

5. Copying Files and Folders
Copying files and folders still is a complicated thing on Windows, especially when the source has damaged sectors. Even when the disk is fine, you need extra tools if you prepare to copy a lot of files: Microsoft apparently never bothered to fix their horrible explorer performance... Which is ironic because the fastest performing local file copier is made by a Microsoft employee...  :-X

Raymond has a great list (https://www.raymond.cc/blog/12-file-copy-software-tested-for-fastest-transfer-speed/2/) to chose from. And you can find a more recent overview here (https://www.online-tech-tips.com/software-reviews/tools-for-copying-many-files/). You will want speed both locally and over the network, but you'll also want file verification and support for bad sectors (= unreadable parts on the hard disk, usually only for non-SSD magnetic disks) too. That said, for local files I stick to FastCopy (https://fastcopy.jp/) these days... Still have to pick a network copier.

6. Very rarely one needs to (re-)create an iso image. PowerISO free evaluation is fine for almost everything, except writing / creating iso images. Then, you will encounter limitation in size etc. Solution for those instances is http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8671.msg22546.html#msg22546 (Jihosoft ISO Maker Free (http://www.jihosoft.com/dl/?id=isomakerfree)).

7. Download manager
I strongly advise against it, because it always causes problems at some site... Yet if you appreciate REAL FAST downloading... Get EagleGet (http://www.eagleget.com/download/), currently the best free downloader. READ THE FINE-PRINT! I would NOT like them to use MY IP address for 3rd party ADVERTISEMENTS! Be warned!!

8. Nature background sounds (TIP)
http://www.umopit.ru/AuraEng.htm - hidden gem: constant relaxation :) The trick is to put the volume on barely noticable. It shouldn't be in your face, but in the background.
In the options you can chose a custom sound folder to add extra sounds. They have a lot of soundpacks which you can download them from their website or from my mirror link, all in 1 convenient package: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AtYB3xpdMJMPag4EnuhIWMTNEKI?e=JSZ6q7.
IMPORTANT: multi-user systems! Aura must be installed in a separate program files folder for each user, otherwise it will only start for the first user logged in. Starting the program slows the boot process down.  Disable the program start in its options. AnVir won't work here! In Task Scheduler make a custom task to start Aura.exe for each user (with each user's account!). Make sure that all 3 action fields are filled in like this:
- program="C:\Program Files\Aura Username\Aura.exe"
- parameters=gstart
- path= (http://matthewcevans.com/blog/2010/08/11/windows-task-scheduler-the-directory-name-is-invalid-0x8007010b/)C:\Program Files\Aura Username\
You can use Task Scheduler's options to delay the starting of each task (after a user's login event). I usually put it at around 15 minutes delay. This way I know the PC is done booting when I hear the birds singing...  :angel:

9. Audio CD Grabbers (http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=18151.msg44620#msg44620)
An unverified list of 4 audio rippers that support FLAC, MP3 and artwork + tags. Most will support volume normalization too.

==================== Manual Intervention / ====================

1. Another great tool for a quick 1-look overview to manage non-Microsoft services is Advanced Service Manager, here: http://securityxploded.com/winservicemanager.php .
2. UUDecode for Windows: extract blocked gmail attachments http://www.miken.com/uud/
3. ADWCleaner: clean up "helper" programs. http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8558.msg22099.html#msg22099
Download from https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
5. This baby has grown in to a beautiful warrior  ::)
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html
This beauty pretty much does it all... Definitely worth running on a misbehaving computer!
6. If that fails, or if you are looking for even more problems, try this one: AutoClean from http://autoclean.computersitter.com/downloads (still testing this one, but it too is very complete)
7. Still in trouble? Look here http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-rootkit-scanner-remover.htm#Quick_Selection_Guide and certainly here http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=8412.0!
8. AVZ (http://www.z-oleg.com/secur/avz_doc_en/): untested by me, but it came advised (http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=4510.msg35727#msg35727)...
9. User tip (http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=8558.msg30128#msg30128): https://www.sosvirus.net/telecharger/zhpcleaner/ (untested)
10. BCD & multi-boot repair? Read http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=13094.msg34892#msg34892.
11. For Windows Update Troubleshooting: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=16602.msg42640#msg42640
12. On older systems, the file "C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J:$DATA" can become extremely fragmented and really big. Even Puran won't be able to help you here, best you can do is to delete it once in a while. This is reasonably safe to do (https://documentation.help/MyDefrag/VolumeActions-DeleteJournal.html) with the following command:
Code: [Select]
fsutil usn deletejournal /n c:

Title: Re: planned cleanup / update for Devvie's Software Choices
Post by: devnullius on 08. January 2016., 08:36:05
I'm going to clean up this article... I'll remove all Windows XP (and Vista) related stuff... For prosterity I'll post a duplicate of my current setup below. Also, I'll remove some programs for which support has stopped (Soluto!) :-(

Here it goes... Archived copy!

(pinned draft v0.85a, Oct. '016)

I always install the same programs for my friends, but once in a while I forget one or two temporarily or even forever ;p

Planning to do this for a long time, I decided to add a (long) list with (free) software I like and a short description when needed. Might take me a few months ; )

Here it goes...

==================== MUST HAVEs ====================

1. Windows XP/Vista/7: change windows update to microsoft update. Win XP/Vista/7/8/10: install all essential and optional updates. Ignore and hide Microsoft Security Essentials if it's offered. Decide about Live tools if they are offered. Hide update Windows Search 4 in Windows XP.

2. Internet browser.
A) There never was any discussion, even from the earliest builds I'd make Google Chrome the default internet browser.
Sadly, Google is on drugs and looking for a utopian internet. Which means they are disabling pretty much every technology you need on a website. Link that with the amount of people complaining about Chrome's RAM usage, it becomes clear to me... I need something new here! Which is very very sad, because the MAIN reason for me to use Chrome always was it's sandbox principles... No other browser is as secure as Chrome.
B) So what to do next? I'm currently testing this setup: Firefox (sigh) with Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free. You might join my tests yourself... malwarebytes.com/antiexploit/ For now: you are on your own and I still advise Chrome ;-)

3. Wise registry cleaner (http://www.wisecleaner.com/download.html)

4. Defrag
* XP/Vista? Puran Defrag (http://www.puransoftware.com/Puran-Defrag-Download.html)
Schedule Automatic Defragmentation to run daily, on first boot a boot-time defrag. Also schedule a monthly defrag. Items to defrag? Boot-time: Optimize Directories ++ Free Space. Monthly? Fast PIOZR ++ Free space ++ Optimize Directories. In tab Additional Opearations I also include Fill Gaps, besides directories ++ free space ++ PIOZR. This is for manually defragmentation.
* Win 7/8.x? Schedule Microsoft Defrag to run daily.
* Win 10? I trust Windows 10 knows best. Leave settings alone.

5. https://www.soluto.com/boot-time or http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/soluto.html.
Manage your boot process. Schedule which programs to run, deny or delay at windows startup. Manage your system boot times and get email notification for system maintenance or notifications about programs that slow your computer down, or programs that need your attention in other ways... All-round nerd on standby with advises. What's not to like? : ) Best-ever way to update known programs like winrar: one click (to start updating) and you are set.
A pointer... Don't go overboard with delaying programs. It's a dangerous habit, delaying. Among others, it removes admin rights of the process (giving your new Windows the most annoying ever feature of Vista: manually giving the OK for some programs that want to autostart). Combine with AnVir TaskManager for superior control of your startup entries.

6. Antivirus
* Avast Home antivirus (http://www.avast.com/ (http://www.avast.com/get/qdYKOrBj)) with browser cleanup and warnings to manually update often abused programs that urgently need updating by you manually. ^^^^
* UPDATE: if you don't like all the Avast pop-ups, take a look at 360 Total Security. Enable all shields, I really started to like this program. Don't forget the patch-up tool! Install all those important updates Microsoft Update doesn't show... http://www.360totalsecurity.com/ Version 7 added a firewall tool and a browser protection tool (limited functionality). All in all, it has become my default anti-virus, despite the annoying "possible virus found" dialogues... Avast was superieur in preventing false positives. On the other side, I have 360 enabled with all engines, not just the default one. I feel safe and less annoyed by interruptions :)

7. 7-zip. Also see Point 2.4! http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

8. Cleanup! by Steven Gould (and not that crap CCleaner!! If only for it does NOT clean ALL user accounts. Cleanup! can, if you set the right options). Set option to scan all users. http://stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/CleanUp452.exe.

9. CHecKDiSK scripts, also by Devnullius: https://app.box.com/s/j49i8mrh1io1iz7k9lrozi7878h4qqh8 . Extract to folder and put CHecKDiSK folder in the root of your system drive (usually C:). Make sure to read °°°°°°°° RUN ONCE °°°°°°°°°°.txt file! ^^^^^^
* Vista/7/8 users can import^ the tasks from c:\CheCKDiSK\Windows\System32\Tasks-folder and only need to adjust windows user name (and maybe adjust frequency of scheduled disk checks).
* XP users have to copy^ all tasks to the task scheduler screen and adjust all tasks as follows:
- User's Opruimen met Cleanup! by CC.job: run at user logon (Cleanup!.bat)
- User's system maintenance sfc by CC.job: run every 3 weeks ^^ (go-sfc.bat)
- Wise Registry Cleaner Schedule Task.job: run when idle for 40 minutes (create task first with Wise program - then tweak to only run when computer is idle)
- User's check disk by CC.job: run every 13 days (chkdsk-c-vista-7-ENG.bat)
- User's chkdsk FULL by CC.job: run monthly and select June & December (chkdsk-c-FULL-for-Bad-Clusters-vista-7-ENG.bat)
- User's compress by CC.job: run every 17 days (Compress.bat)
- User's compress C; and D;.job, can be removed if you do NOT have a D:-partition that can safely be compressed (Compress_C-D.bat).
ALSO all Tasks need te be ran ONLY when user is logged on (password changes!).
Also see http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8077.msg20485.html#msg20485 for more background discussions about my compress.bat script...
- CHecKDiSK-folder contains more .bat-scripts, tailored for specific needs and drives...

10. Acronis Drive Monitor: http://www.acronis.com/en-us/homecomputing/download/drive-monitor/ (mirror: https://app.box.com/s/g12ohu8bj17n8l3i2aqm) .
Be careful when installing: comes with many crapware options... And DO READ my article here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,7955.msg19883.html#msg19883 and even here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8087.msg20515.html#msg20515 .

11. http://www.handystartmenu.com . Windows 8.x users should read this first: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=7941.0. Windows 10 users are, for now, not able to run HSM :/

12. While Soluto is great to manage your good programs and their startup process, you also need a startup guard.
Popular choice is WinPatrol. I have a family lifetime license, and do not like it. It's old-fashioned and at moments annoyingly dumb :(
My personal preference by far is for AnVir Task Manager. FIRST A WARNING: while an excellent tool, it comes with 'helper' software which you cannot disable with the setup. I know: doesn't sound good, still I do this for every computer I install. The program really is the best to manage startup items on your PC. Despite this nasty install behaviour and often 'crashing' GUI (if you give it time, it will always start responding, but it might take some time).
With 360 antivirus installed, you can safely install: the trojan will be intercepted without interrupting the installation. I have not tested Avast with this, though if avast lets it true, there is no real danger. With iobit uninstaller you can easily remove the 'trojan' once more...
Set options to only show HDD icon (WITH temperature notification). Other settings can be left alone. Only use it as a startup guard (also guards your browser's homepage). See: http://www.anvir.com/task-manager-windows-startup.htm . Also set a Google Alert, this program often is given away in a (more) pro(-ish) version for free. Think giveawayoftheday.com.
Not all is paradise though! A big disadvantage is that the custom user interface mostly seems to crash and non-responding. Wait a little, it will start reacting again. Learn to live with it ;p It is definitely a program to get - hdd temperature monitoring ++ startup manager. For CPU throttling, there are better (non-free) programs. For now, leave CPU managed by Windows.

13. Ad Muncher (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,9412.msg26897.html#msg26897). It's the *only* ad blocker that meets my high standards! And it became 100% free! Download: http://staging.admuncher.com/beta.shtml or mirrors here http://www.download3k.com/Install-Ad-Muncher.html .

14.

==================== REALLY SMART TO INSTALL TOO ====================

1. BrowserProtect.org went offline :/

2. SystemProtect (http://www.pcrx.com/system_protect/).
Should be a "MUST HAVE", but... ^^^

3. IObit Uninstaller (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/iobit_uninstaller.html)

4. 7zip works for most. But... To top it all of and be prepared for ANYTHING... Do this: download & install WinRar. XP/Vista/7 do the same for PowerISO.
(downloads: http://www.win-rar.com/download.html and http://www.poweriso.com/download.htm)
FILE ASSOCIATIONS! XP users? First install 7zip, associate ALL file types. Vista/7 users should associate 7zip with all BUT *.zip files. Windows 8 should associate 7zip with all BUT *.zip and *.iso. THEN associate WinRar with NOTHING, except for *.rar files.  XP/Vista/7: associate PowerIso with everything it can handle. Then associate your default media player again for all supported file types... PowerIso might have hijacked some... ;p

5. Burning CD/DVD on Windows is a pita. Especially with many burners, it can take hours to create a dvd, if succeeding at all. The solution is free and simple: https://cdburnerxp.se/. Even has some ISO conversion tools. Enjoy!

6.

==================== IF YOU LIKE THE DETAILS ====================

1. http://www.fcleaner.com/recyclebinex Schedule it to empty your recyclebin automatically every 30 days (or as often as you like).

2. Latest Daum Pot Player English (http://download.cnet.com/Daum-Potplayer/3000-13632_4-75587055.html). Be careful when installing: comes with many crapware options... The program also handles DVD, but is not a specialized dvd player. See point 7, below, for that!

3. For torrents: still utorrent, but only use utorrent 2.2.1. I explained more here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,11042.msg30268.html#msg30268. Short reason: after it got bought by BitTorrent Inc., stuff went downhill. Today I posted about my problems and all I got was a forum ban. Not professional at all. They really don't like you talking about version 2.2.1 - and there's a reason for that! DOWNLOAD here: https://app.box.com/s/if7kk4qjkxz3n1jm03nsjj5xkxiqe9bi

To search for torrents, I nowadays just use Google with time limited search (use the cache function if torrents are blocked by your ISP). Newbies can also use Bit Che (http://convivea.com/product.php?id=2) to search many torrent sites at once.

4. John's Background Switcher (http://downloads.johnsadventures.com/SwitcherSetup48.exe). You can import my personal favorite settings from \CHeCKDiSK-folder (also see Item 1.9).

5. PDF... http://www.stdutility.com/download.html . Lean mean reading machine :)
Need more? http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8595.0.html

6. (REMOVED - actually causes more problems than it solves; only start manual and you should be fine...)
Save desktop icon layout: http://www.softwareok.com/?Download=DesktopOK . If program starts in German... "Sprache" means "Language Settings" :)
Also see: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8110.msg20575.html

7. DVD Player...I think I finally solved this one! Wondershare Free Video Player. ^^^^^^^^

8. User auto-logon? Use command 'netplwiz':
Win XP http://unlockforus.blogspot.nl/2009/05/skip-welcome-screen-in-windows-7vistaxp.html (also gives registry settings to do this),
Win Vista http://unlockforus.blogspot.nl/2007/10/unlockthis-quickinfo-login.html ,
Win 7 http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/auto-logon-windows-7.htm ,
Win 8 http://geekitdown.com/how-to-login-automatically-windows-8/ ,
Win 10 http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-automatically-login-in-windows-10/ .

TIP: If you want to remove password expiration do the following:
       Click on Start's Search button.
       Type: wmic
       Right click found program wmic and “Run as Administrator”
       Now paste this commmand:
                     UserAccount where PasswordExpires=TRUE set PasswordExpires=FALSE
       Confirm change for each account with password expiration.

A computer (laptop) always going to sleep mode (especially XP) will often not install or update Windows. And that's bad ;p

10. Although Wise Registry Cleaner already has a quick tune up function to speed the general usage of Windows up, one can finetune even more... With Windows SMART Services (XP/Vista/7)! Download the tool here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/SMART-Utility.shtml . You can extract this standalone utility to a folder. Run the program as administrator and chose Moderate for a Newbie friend (and for yourself of course Advanced Tweaks). On Vista, make sure to right-click and start the program as an administrator, or else you will get flooded with little error screens. Use Task Manager to kill the main process when that happens...
You can read in great detail all that is happening, here: http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/
(And Windows 8.x users can use that URL to manually tweak their system.)
Another great tool for a quick 1-look overview and to quickly manage non-Microsoft services is Advanced Service Manager, here: http://securityxploded.com/winservicemanager.php .

11. OFFICE Alternatives
For Microsoft Office Viewers in all languages, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979860 .

For actual Microsoft Office alternatives, which allow you to EDIT documents...? From http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8399.msg21457.html#msg21457 , I chose SoftMaker FreeOffice (http://www.freeoffice.com/freeofficewindows.exe). One catch: I've seen systems where file association during setup wasn't remembered. You can start every program and re-associate from the menu options. That works.

In general, I first install FreeOffice and associate it with all except .RTF. Then I install the office viewers (prepare for massive updates!) and set them as default for each of their own. I hardly ever edit documents, so in case I need to edit I will right-click and chose FreeOffice (or you can use one of the system tray icons to quickly open the editor you need...)

13. Very rarely one needs to (re-)create an iso image. PowerISO free evaluation is fine for almost everything, except writing / creating iso images. Then, you will encounter limitation in size etc. Solution for those instances is http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8671.msg22546.html#msg22546 (Jihosoft ISO Maker Free).

14. Screensavers!
* Electric Sheep, a genetic algorithm based screensaver with abstracts (upvote image with arrow up, downvote with arrow down). Don't forget to download the Sheep-pack for extra nice images! http://community.electricsheep.org/node/247 . Create a free account, sign in. Set V-Sync to enabled. Set FPS for playback to "3". Gives nicest results, I feel :)
* The best OpenGL screensavers from http://www.reallyslick.com/screensavers/. One of them, Helios, really stands out I feel. I like it with these values: Ions=32. Animation speed=8. Ion size=100. Camera speed=1. Emitters2. Blur=24. Attractors=5. Limit=0. Feel free to tune a bit to your likings though :)

15. Image editing: 2 programs that complement each other very well to cover all basic tasks one might wish for...
* Paint.NET: http://www.dotpdn.com/downloads/pdn.html
* Photo! Editor: http://pho.to/editor/

16. DAMN NFO Viewer: if you download warez, you will like this .nfo viewer :) http://nl.afterdawn.com/downloads/desktop/mix_desktop_tools/damn_nfo_viewer.cfm

17. Nature background sounds
http://www.umopit.ru/AuraEng.htm - hidden gem: constant relaxation :) Add extra sound folder in the options by downloading the optional user nature sound packs (or download them from my mirror link all in 1 convenient package ;) http://1drv.ms/1M4LqSn).

18. Help Windows removing a USB drive... http://quickandeasysoftware.net/software/usb-disk-ejector

19. STREMIO with Torrent plugin enabled, combined with Popcorn 5.4
Depending on local laws, you will need a VPN to protect your IP address when using torrent streaming (the only thing I assume you will be really using). I definitely advise TigerVPN's lifetime subscription.
WHEN you are safe from the Law, you will find these awesome internet multimediaplayers to find, track & play all kinds of tv series or movies. http://strem.io and http://popcorn-time.se/. Strem.io has the most potential (but has some some problems), Popcorn Time is the smoothest experience but is more basic.

20.

==================== Manual Intervention ====================

1. ADWCleaner: clean up "helper" programs. http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8558.msg22099.html#msg22099
2. Junkware removal tool http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/
3. This baby has grown in to a beautiful warrior  ::)
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html
This beauty pretty much does it all... Definitely worth running on a malbehaving computer!
4. If that fails, or if you are looking for even more problems, try this one: AutoClean from http://autoclean.computersitter.com/downloads (still testing this one, but it too is very complete)
5. Still in trouble? Look here http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-rootkit-scanner-remover.htm#Quick_Selection_Guide

^^^ Dunno why, but on SOME systems it might cause problems with quick tray icons not showing. Install this program seperately by first rebooting, than installing, than rebooting again.
See if anything changes. If ok, keep it running.
I use it as a last resort shield for unknown virii - this way, system file changes should be noticed and need your confirmation before continuing. Does not interfere with microsoft update. Also see: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Security-Related/System-Protect-Crawler.shtml . This program is often described as malware. It is NOT. I use this software for a decade or so now...
Other problems with this program...? When hard disk has faults, the service will fail to start. Do chkdsk c: /f /v /x /r to test. No luck? Install the program again. No luck? Remove SystemProtect.
Also when you notice REALLY slow loading of chrome pages (and you do not have Avast Web Shield installed), remove SystemProtect too.
^^^^ I've seen many systems where Avast + Chrome == Slow Loading Web Pages. IF you find loading pages to be too slow, re-run Avast setup, chose custom setup and remove Web Shield. All will be better. Also see ^^^?
^^^^^
^^^^^^ First, in elevated command prompt: %SystemRoot%\system32\cleanmgr.exe /sageset:60. THEN change chkdsk time-out value: chkntfs /T:3 (Entering 0 (number zero) will give you the default 10 seconds to cancel chkdsk).^

I'm going to clean up this article... I'll remove all Windows XP (and Vista) related stuff... For prosterity I'll post a duplicate of my current setup below. Also, I'll remove some programs for which support has stopped (Soluto!) :-(

I know that you hate XP... however, it seems that you have started with the "spring cleaning" earlier this Year. ;D

added some file unlockers that still (should) work with Windows 10. Untested, but it seems to be the best there is :/ Enjoy? Also tweaked / added some bits here and there... Closing in to version 1.0; only took me 4 years Xd

I made some changes to the ad-blocking software... You might like to take a look!

For future reference: these are the filters I use with AdGuard browser extensions... I'll update this list in the future when needed. Enjoy!

TIP: I enabled many filters. This can seriously slow down your webpage loading (while blocking ads should speed up the loading proces...). When in doubt, start with the default settings and gradually expand...

After long delay (lazy), I finally removed this again:
* * * Adaware Antivirus (https://www.adaware.com/antivirus)
Adaware AV can be installed as the main AV OR as a second line of defense. That never hurts... Up to you : ) It does need email license verification though...

It was *horrible* and did not play well with others either. My bad!

I always install the same programs for my friends, but once in a while I forget one or two temporarily or even forever ;p

Planning to do this for a long time, I decided to add a (long) list with (free) software I like and a short description when needed. Might take me a few months ; )

Planning to do this for a long time, I decided to add a (long) list with (free) software I like and a short description when needed. Might take me a few months ; )

Here it goes...

==================== MUST HAVEs ====================

0. REGISTER ALL YOUR EMAIL ADDRESSES HERE: https://haveibeenpwned.com/
Really. Do it. NOW! Don't forget to register...!!!

1. Install all essential and optional updates. Ignore and hide Microsoft Security Essentials if it's offered. Decide about Live tools if they are offered.

2. Internet browser.
A) There never was any discussion, even from the earliest builds I'd make Google Chrome the default internet browser.
Sadly, Google disabled many popular web technologies, making some website unusable so we need something new here! Which is very very sad, because the MAIN reason for me to use Chrome always was it's sandbox principles... No other browser is as secure as Chrome.
B) So what to do next? It's up to you, but I'll share my setup with you.
Still Chrome for day-to-day activities and browsing. Opera (http://www.opera.com/) for all my video wishes and Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org) / Edge as backup browsers if something doesn't work in those two. And I set Brave as the default browser, to catch all automatically opening websites by local programs.

You may also download it here: http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_exploit/.
IMPORTANT: multi-user systems! MBAE must be installed for each user in its own program files directory, otherwise only the first logged in account can use it.

4. Cloud Security (with optional ClamAV shields)
Immunet: http://www.immunet.com/. Also works on all Windows Server versions. This is mostly for Home users. Advanced
users might get annoyed by the many false positives triggered by cracks and warez etc.

5. Antivirus
* Home users should use this:
* * Avast Home antivirus (http://www.avast.com/ (http://www.avast.com/get/qdYKOrBj)). You might want to read this firs (https://www.winhelp.info/put-avast-free-antivirus-on-a-diet/)t, before installing. By default, you get many 'demo' versions installed... With constant reminders! ^^^^
* Geeks could use this:
* * 360 Total Security
IF you don't like all the Avast pop-ups, take a look at 360 Total Security (http://www.360totalsecurity.com/). Enable all shields, I really started to like this program. Especially because of the Toolbox that comes with it... All in all, it has become my default anti-virus, despite the annoying "possible virus found" dialogues... Avast was superior in preventing false positives. On the other side, I have 360 enabled with all engines, not just the default one. I feel safe and less annoyed by interruptions :) One disadvantage is that you need to manually check for updates of the program version: that won't upgrade automatically. And DO TAKE A CAREFUL LOOK which services get shut down... For example, Defrag & Check Disk Health should remain ON but 360TS disables them when optimizing the system.
* * Running Windows Server?
* * * Baidu Antivirus (http://antivirus.baidu.com/en/)
Looks like a professional AV and I install it on my Windows Servers... Baidu is one of the few that will work (for free) on Windows Server OSs.
* * * Malwarebytes AV (https://www.malwarebytes.com/)

6. Wise registry cleaner (http://www.wisecleaner.com/download.html)

7. Defrag
* Win 7/8.x? Schedule Microsoft Defrag to run daily.
* Win 10? I trust Windows 10 knows best. Leave settings alone.

8. While Windows 10 already gives you OneDrive Cloud Storage, I strongly advise you to install pCloud Drive too! It has lots of features, including a sync folder, 20GB & auto-backup / import other cloud storage solutions! Sign up HERE: https://my.pcloud.com/#page=register&invite=EVu7ZQMnluX

NL-only TIP: STACK - extreme cloud storage by transip.nl (1 TB total) with Webdav support and custom URL! Go here: https://www.transip.nl/cp/stack/activeren/ (you'll have to await an invite). If you have activated your account, go here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,11485.msg31150.html#msg31150 for detailed instructions.

9. 7-zip. Also see Point 2.4! http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

10. Cleanup! by Steven Gould (and not that crap CCleaner!! If only for it does NOT clean ALL user accounts. Cleanup! can, if you set the right options). Set option to scan all users. http://stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/CleanUp452.exe.

Adjust to your likings!

12. Acronis Drive Monitor: http://dl2.acronis.com/s/ADM_en-US.exe (mirror: https://app.box.com/s/g12ohu8bj17n8l3i2aqm) .
Be careful when installing: comes with many crapware options... And DO READ my article here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,7955.msg19883.html#msg19883 and even here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8087.msg20515.html#msg20515 .

13. Uncheck that check-box!
User tip (http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=13175.msg35013#msg35013): UnChecky (https://unchecky.com/) - if you don't need all those bonus tools you get offered, or even hate them... Try this little gem ; -)

14. You need a startup guard to warn you against new programs trying to always run when you start your computer
Popular choice is WinPatrol. I have a family lifetime license, and do not like it. It's old-fashioned and at moments annoyingly dumb :(
My personal preference by far is for AnVir Task Manager. The program really is the best to manage startup items on your PC, despite a history of nasty install behaviour. Also, often the GUI looks to be 'crashed'. Give it time, it will always start responding again, but it might take some time.
If you have multiple users, you need to install AnVir to a seperate program files folder for each user. Things get messy if you don't ;p

15. Advertisement Management and Blocking!
A. On OS level (Windows)
- Ad Muncher (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,9412.msg26897.html#msg26897). It was the *only* ad blocker that meets my high standards! And it became 100% free! Download: http://staging.admuncher.com/beta.shtml or mirrors here http://www.download3k.com/Install-Ad-Muncher.html .
IMPORTANT: multi-user systems! Install AM for each user to it's own program files directory. Also, tick the correct options so each user has his or her own settings. Otherwise, AM will only start for the first account logging in.

While AM is (was) THE BEST ad-blocker ever (I never got non-functioning websites or denied access because I'm using an Ad Blocker) it is becoming (slowly) obsolete. Reason? Version 4.x does NOT support httpS websites! Version 5.x was years in the making but in the end it never saw the day of light. AM is looking for investors before they continue work on v5...
- DNS based solution: https://adguard.com/en/adguard-dns/instruction.html#instruction (not tested: I expect slow browsing due to slow DNS responses).

B. So I started to look at extra ad-blocking tools that hardly ever 'corrupt' websites (access denied or other problems). The Ad-Muncher developers advice uBlock Origin (https://www.google.nl/search?q=ublock+origin&oq=ublock+origin&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.1679j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8). It's a good all-rounder (pop-up blocking + ad-blocking + annoyances blocking).

I like more control and found two extensions...
- Chrome / Opera / FF: Popup Blocker (strict) (https://www.google.nl/search?client=opera&q=Popup+Blocker+(strict)&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8)
With these two extensions added, I have a good all-round protection against ads WITHOUT (hardly) any notifications that I'm not allowed to do something because I'm using adverstisement blockers... Tested and verified with thedaretelly.com. Test it yourself :)

16. http://www.handystartmenu.com .
* Windows 7/8.x users should read this first: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=7941.0.
* Windows 10 users are, for now, not able to run HSM :/

17.

==================== REALLY SMART TO INSTALL TOO ====================

1. Add 'Take Ownership' to Context Menu (http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3841-take-ownership-add-context-menu-windows-10-a.html) in Windows. Add 'Upload to VirusTotal (https://www.virustotal.com/nl/documentation/desktop-applications/)' context menu.

3. It's just those annoying extras they keep pushing :/

4. 7zip works for most.

Enjoy!

6. Copying Files and Folders
Copying files and folders still is a complicated thing on Windows, especially when the source has damaged sectors. Even when the disk is fine, you need extra tools if you prepare to copy a lot of files (and bypass antivirus checks on each and every file...!).
Raymond has a great list (https://www.raymond.cc/blog/12-file-copy-software-tested-for-fastest-transfer-speed/2/) to chose from. You will want speed both locally and over the network, but you'll also want file verification and support for bad sectors too (= unreadable parts on the hard disk, usually only for non-SSD magnetic disks).
These are my choices:
* TeraCopy: http://www.codesector.com/teracopy
* RoadKill's Unstoppable Copier: http://www.roadkil.net/downloads.php
* FastCopy: https://ipmsg.org/tools/fastcopy.html.en
* RichCopy: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2009.04.utilityspotlight.aspx
And of course, I should also mention RoboCopy and its clones... Should... ;p

7.

==================== IF YOU LIKE THE DETAILS ====================

1. http://www.fcleaner.com/recyclebinex Schedule it to empty your recyclebin automatically every 30 days (or as often as you like).

2. Latest Daum Pot Player English (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/potplayer.html).

TESTING: http://www.qbittorrent.org/ as an alternative

To search for torrents, I nowadays just use Google with time limited search (use the cache function if torrents are blocked by your ISP). Newbies can also use Bit Che (http://convivea.com/product.php?id=2) to search many torrent sites at once.

4. John's Background Switcher (http://downloads.johnsadventures.com/SwitcherSetup412.exe). You can import my personal favorite settings from \CHeCKDiSK-folder (also see Item 1.9). I have a quick link here: https://app.box.com/s/dys8sjlhojiwr51gqlcu3mi581o5aahq . You'll find over 10k backgrounds. Read more here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,6219.msg30581.html#msg30581
IMPORTANT: multi-user systems! JBS must be installed in a seperate program files folder for each user, otherwise it will only start for the first user logged in. Delay it's start with AnVir - starting the program slows the boot process down.

5. PDF... http://www.stdutility.com/download.html . Lean mean reading machine :)
Need more? http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8595.0.html

6.

7. DVD Player...I think I finally solved this one! Wondershare Free Video Player. ^^^^^^^^ It *is* discontinued again, but you can still download it from here http://download.wondershare.com/inst/player_setup_full1374.exe.

8. User auto-logon? Use command 'netplwiz':
Win XP http://unlockforus.blogspot.nl/2009/05/skip-welcome-screen-in-windows-7vistaxp.html (also gives registry settings to do this),
Win Vista http://unlockforus.blogspot.nl/2007/10/unlockthis-quickinfo-login.html ,
Win 7 http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/auto-logon-windows-7.htm ,
Win 8 http://geekitdown.com/how-to-login-automatically-windows-8/ ,
Win 10 http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-automatically-login-in-windows-10/ .

TIP: If you want to remove password expiration do the following:
       Click on Start's Search button.
       Type: wmic
       Right click found program wmic and “Run as Administrator”
       Now paste this commmand:
                     UserAccount where PasswordExpires=TRUE set PasswordExpires=FALSE
       Confirm change for each account with password expiration.

From http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8399.msg21457.html#msg21457 , I chose SoftMaker FreeOffice (http://www.softmaker.net/down/freeoffice2016.exe). One catch: I've seen systems where file association during setup wasn't remembered. You can start every program and re-associate from the menu options.

Optional: don't forget to download the Sheep-pack (http://draves.org/blog/archives/000524.html) for extra nice images! http://community.electricsheep.org/node/247 .

* Paint.NET: http://www.dotpdn.com/downloads/pdn.html
* Photo! Editor from http://pho.to/editor/ (download: http://filehippo.com/download_photo_editor/tech/)
Bonus: has some smart features for mass-editing: http://PhotoScape.org/

16. DAMN NFO Viewer: if you download warez, you will like this .nfo viewer :) http://nl.afterdawn.com/downloads/desktop/mix_desktop_tools/damn_nfo_viewer.cfm

17. Nature background sounds
http://www.umopit.ru/AuraEng.htm - hidden gem: constant relaxation :) The trick is to put the volume on barely noticable. It shouldn't be in your face, but in the background.
In the options you can chose a custom sound folder to add extra sounds. They have a lot of soundpacks which you can download them from their website or from my mirror link, all in 1 convenient package: http://1drv.ms/1M4LqSn.
:angel:

18. Help Windows removing a USB drive... http://quickandeasysoftware.net/software/usb-disk-ejector

19. If downloading torrents isn't your thing, and if you don't like thedaretelly.com with Ad Muncher, Popcorn Time might be your thing.
There are many builds... Here a quick overview to get you started!
- install nothing: https://popcorntime-online.io/
- Popcorn Butter: https://popcorntime.sh/ (build.3.10-0 "popcorn is love" beta HEAD 28112167)
- http://popcorn-time.to/ (version 5.x - mirror: popcorn-time.se)
- STREMIO (http://www.strem.io/) with Torrent plugin enabled
Strem.io has the most potential (but has some problems)

WARNING: Depending on local laws, you will need a VPN to protect your IP address when using torrent streaming. I definitely advise TigerVPN's lifetime subscription.
WHEN you are safe from the Law, you will find these to be awesome internet multimedia players to find, track & play all kinds of tv series or movies.
TIP: if you notice sound slowly gets more and more out of sync while playing movies, try installing VLC Media Player (http://get.videolan.org/). Its codecs are far superior to Mediaplayer's and Popcorn software actively looks for a VLC installation...

Hello D.,

First of all thanks a lot for the all your effort.. FYI, for a while We'll have direct link to this Topic in the News - above, visible from everywhere. O0

Also, I would like to recommend two Apps:

- IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREE graphic viewer: http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=702.0

- LightShot is the fastest way to take a customizable screenshot: https://app.prntscr.com/en/index.html

Keep up the good work. :up:

Glad at least 1 person appreciated it!! : ) Yeah it's a lot of work, but kinda fun when you set yourself to it. And I save SO MUCH TIME each time I have to install a fresh PC : )

QUOTE: "FYI, for a while We'll have direct link to this Topic in the News - above, visible from everywhere". I like that : ) Thank you!

For your 2 tips... Sorry... : )

IrFan is very popular and well-known. And good. It just doesn't add something for the REGULAR  know-nothing PC user.  People that are into images will know what they like. Others will be happy with the regular PhotoViewer Windows offers. And the explorer thumbnails : )

I didn't know about the clipboard viewer. But my experience is that they often complicate matters and a know-nothing user will only get confused. And they often don't even know copy-paste... Also, it's a security risk Some data shouldn't be remembered^ ;p
CORRECTION: not a clipboard viewer, a screenshot maker! I'll test it out, that actually might be a good addition for people who like the details... My bad!  :-* UPDATE: I do know the program... Let's see why I don't use it by default ;-)

ANYONE ELSE??? I DO LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT THINGS I MISSED : )

Peace!

The main article was getting a bit too crammed... So while I prepare for version 2.0, I'll put some details below... And link in my main article to this reply instead :)

See the previous version of this article (http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=8202.msg41831#msg41831) to read more about John's Background Switcher. It's still awesome, but Flickr's removal of over 90% of all images I stored there, means my current settings for JBS are kind of lame. I still have a backup, but uploading it and sharing it again with you guys is on my to-do list. So I had to find a quick cop-out and I found one!

The article Download All Microsoft Spotlight Images (http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=16069.msg41857#msg41857), contains instructions on how to download it all yourself, and some instructions on how to set them as a background without using extra software).

That project is not done yet, but once those torrent packs are prepared and uploading, I'll explain in detail how you can use Microsoft's Slide Show or use John's Background Switcher instead!
UPDATE: project is done. Torrent uploading is failing me, but you can use this download link (https://my.pcloud.com/publink/show?code=kZLF5nkZLNdYHQcrlE4Rb45qRC7krzbBBunV) and get my backgrounds archive (and all the tools you need).

You might want to move all JPG files to a single folder or re-organize them in folders with the same amount of images in them (say, 400).

The reason to put them into equally sized folders is to equally randomize all images. John's Background Switcher will go to each folder and pick 1 random image. If a folder only has 1 image, that image will be shown very often.

To recurse subfolders, Windows Slideshow needs all images in your Pictures Library (as explained in chapter 3, here (http://scforum.info/index.php?topic=16069.msg41857#msg41857)). Spare yourself the hassle, just go with JBS!

25. Uninstall Groove Music (thanks to Benjamin for the suggestion)

Get-AppxPackage *ZuneMusic* | Remove-AppxPackage
Command explanation
The command itself is pretty simple. First, we get the app package details with the Get-AppxPackage cmdlet. Then, we use those package details to uninstall the store app with the Remove-AppxPackage cmdlet.

Uninstall all Microsoft store apps at once
If you want to uninstall all store apps at once, use the PowerShell command below

Step 1: Open the PowerShell app as admin. To do that, search for “PowerShell” in the Start menu, right-click on the search result, and select the “Run as administrator” option.

Open powershell as admin
Step 2: Execute the below command in the PowerShell window. To do that, copy the command, right-click inside the PowerShell window, and press Enter.

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage
As soon as you execute the command, Windows will scan the system and uninstalls all Microsoft store apps. Of course, some system apps like Cortana, Microsoft Store, etc., and user-installed store apps will not be uninstalled with this command.

One thing to keep in mind while using this command is that it will uninstall the store apps for all users.

- Ad Muncher (http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,9412.msg26897.html#msg26897). It was the *only* ad blocker that meets my high standards! And it even became free! Download: http://staging.admuncher.com/beta.shtml or mirrors here http://www.download3k.com/Install-Ad-Muncher.html . Sadly, development has stopped and the filters aren't updated any longer nor are HTTPS connections supported.
IMPORTANT: multi-user systems! Install AM for each user to it's own program files directory. Also, tick the correct options so each user has his or her own settings. Otherwise, AM will only start for the first account logging in.
Install it as the absolute bare minimum if you have a friend that really doesn't know how to work with a computer. As said, other ad blockers occasionally cause problems with a website: one has to know what to do when that happens (either, try another browser or trouble-shoot the ad-blockers)

While it still does some things, development (including filters) stopped years ago. Time to say goodbye :(

Goodbye AdMuncher! I miss you every day.

Title: Tell me your favorite file copier for Local files and for network transfer files
Post by: devnullius on 21. June 2021., 11:50:38
This probably could use a refresh too... So tell me... what are YOUR favorite high-performing file copiers?

1. for local files (disk to disk or usb)
2. for network locations

Quote
You will want speed both locally and over the network, but you'll also want file verification and support for bad sectors (= unreadable parts on the hard disk, usually only for non-SSD magnetic disks) too.
These are my choices:
* TeraCopy: http://www.codesector.com/teracopy
* RoadKill's Unstoppable Copier: http://www.roadkil.net/downloads.php
* FastCopy: https://ipmsg.org/tools/fastcopy.html.en
* RichCopy: https://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/Microsoft-RichCopy.shtml#download (hoffmanutilityspotlight2009_04.exe)
And of course, I should also mention RoboCopy and its clones... Should... ;p

4. Unlock locked files. Unlocker 1.9.2 *used* to be the best program to unlock files. Sadly, they aren't doing a good job since Windows 8.x/10. So without a lot of testing, here are some tools that should do a proper job on Windows 10...
- MalwareBytes FilesASSASSIN
- IOBit Unlocker (be aware of crapware extras!)
- LockHunter
Peace!

This probably could use a refresh too... So tell me... what are YOUR favorite high-performing file copiers?

1. for local files (disk to disk or usb)
2. for network locations

You will want speed both locally and over the network, but you'll also want file verification and support for bad sectors (= unreadable parts on the hard disk, usually only for non-SSD magnetic disks) too.
These are my choices:
* TeraCopy: http://www.codesector.com/teracopy
* RoadKill's Unstoppable Copier: http://www.roadkil.net/downloads.php
* FastCopy: https://ipmsg.org/tools/fastcopy.html.en
* RichCopy: https://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/Microsoft-RichCopy.shtml#download (hoffmanutilityspotlight2009_04.exe)
And of course, I should also mention RoboCopy and its clones... Should... ;p

Refreshed the article to:

Raymond has a great list to chose from. And you can find a more recent overview here. That said, for local files I stick to FastCopy these days... Still have to pick a network copier.

Time to replace iobit with this new tip I got: https://www.martau.com/uninstaller-download.php

Advantage? No nagging popups - the amount of licenses my friends bought because they thought that was what I wanted... ;-( Sigh! :)

Special shout-out to https://www.revouninstaller.com/

I had a stubborn program remnant (after a system restore, windows 11). Setup woudln't continue until I uninstalled it. No files on disk. Nothing in system32 or hosts. Nothing in the registry (UFS Explorer Recovery Pro 8.2). Ever tried searching the registry on UFS? Sigh.

Registry cleaning with Wise Registry Cleaner? Nothing. iobit uninstaller? Nothing. Martau below? Nothing.

But RevoUninstaller's log based removal tool actually removed whatever the frack was bugging the setup. When on Windows 11, do keep an eye on folder protected actions and give access where requested (Defender).
