There are not many options for good free video editing software on Mac. But what is available is quite good.

iMovie is the obvious for beginners. Pretty simple to use and gets the job done. ‘Nuff said.

Davinci Resolve is an incredible professional tool that for some reason BlackMagic gives away for free. Before BM bought it and started giving away you would have to pass hundreds of thousands of dollars to get a Davinci color suite. It by contrast is not easy to use. It's a very sophisticated and powerful tool. There is better editing software out there. However, Resolve’s strength is color correction, it supports almost all video formats, and is a robust tool for file conversion. - I couldn't live without it!

I’ve tried a bunch of free tools over the years, mostly for quick trimming and shrinking clips before uploading or archiving. What usually matters to me is stability and predictable output, not fancy effects. Some free apps work fine for simple jobs, but they can be hit or miss with longer videos or odd formats, and crashes during export are what made me switch tools more than once.

For shrinking files, I’ve had the best results when I stick to basic presets and don’t overthink settings. Free encoders can give surprisingly good quality if you accept slower processing or do a bit of trial and error. If you’re on older hardware, hardware acceleration support (when it actually works) makes a noticeable difference.

When comparing tools or checking workflows, I sometimes look at general video software sites just to see how others approach similar tasks or what formats are commonly supported. One example is  https://www.movavi.com/ , which I’ve used as a reference point rather than a daily tool.
